TheKamdyMan Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 The only problem with that for Nebraska is he gets to see how the season unfolds at each school courting him. If he uses that as a barometer and NU struggles it may hurt the chances of getting him. If he signs in November only I believe 1-2 games will have been played at that time. Quote
Creighton Fan Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 You wonder if some schools might be telling him, "yeah, we have a lot of bigs on the roster, but they are going pro or will be transferring after the season." That would explain why he might want to wait. I think that generally speaking, when kids wait, they are doing it either to see if they will get immediate playing time or they are stalling for offers from higher profile schools. Since this kid will presumably have used all of his official visits by then, it seems less likely that the latter reason would be the case here. Quote
ajb5856 Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 I guess I just don't understand what he's going to do until April. He's taking his 4th of 5 officials this weekend, the last of September. Then he's got 50 days or so to take a 5th official before the November signing period. At that point he will have visited every school he's considering in using his unofficials. He will have all information. Then he's just going to sit around for 5 months and ponder his decision? I don't see him waiting it out that long. He may go past the early signing period, but April? Is there a chance he's just throwing this out there to see which schools are willing to stick with him? To see who wants him most? Is he wanting to watch his potential schools this season to see which programs are heading in a positive direction and see where his best fit is? Quote
FredsSlacks Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 Can we afford to wait until April? Should we tell Wacker he has a committable offer? Our only other options right now are Deng, Pinder, and Smith. Quote

Norm Peterson Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 Well guys...here's the latest on Elbert. This is from Pony Pride, SMU's Rivals page. http://nebraska.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1553186 Doesn't have a date when he's going to cut his list. Wants to cut his list to 6 or 7 schools. Wants to commit to a school in April. Down to 304 pounds. Doing a lot of boxing classes. And he IS taking the Ohio State visit this weekend. Well, screw us if that's the case, then. I was hoping he'd be so blown away by his experience coming here that he'd commit on the spot or soon thereafter. The longer he waits the worse our chances, IMO. Especially if he waits until spring. Schools will be scrambling to fill recruiting classes and guys who wouldn't normally get second looks in the fall will be getting all kinds of attention in the spring. Offer lists blow up and competition for the last good uncommitted players heats up. If he waits until spring, we're hosed I'm afraid. On to the next one. Quote
NUdiehard Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 Can we afford to wait until April? Should we tell Wacker he has a committable offer? Our only other options right now are Deng, Pinder, and Smith. Well if we have a legitimate shot with Robinson, and the coaches would know, then we can't just give up because we have to wait. Miles doesn't have to "wait" for Robinson at all if he is signing in the spring. Miles can easily sign 2 players in November and still sign Robinson in April. Miles could sign 3 players in Nov and still sign Robinson in April. Heck, Miles could even sign 3 players in Nov and another 2 or even 3 players in April if he wants. My point is that if Robinson truly is waiting until April, then Miles does not need to save a scholarship for him because if Robinson wants to sign with NU in April, then Miles will simply "create" room for him. It is that simple. There is no way Miles is going to turn down Robinson if he wants to commit in April no matter what his scholarship situation is. There will just have to be a current player (or 2 or 3) who "decide to transfer closer to home" or whatever they decide to call it. Quote

Doesn't B1G rules limit basketball oversigning to 1 player over the scholarship limit? If that is the case, the most we could sign would be 3. Miles could only sign 2 in November and make room for Robinson in April correct? Quote

Its just a matter of whether/how many players "choose to leave" after the end of the season. As long as the current player announces that he is leaving before the April signing period (most likely within a week or two after the season ends in March), Miles can fill the recently vacated spots with new LOIs in April. ajb5856 Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 More Elbert info. Interesting comments about his visit to LSU over last weekend. Again from Lawrence Johns, Robinsons AAU coach. There's one quote in particular that I'd love to post but its from Rivals, a pay site, so I'll post the article and then paraphrase for those who don't subscribe. This seems very promising and I'm a little more upbeat now than I was after reading the SMU article yesterday. http://bit.ly/15U3Pee -there's is no current leader for Elbert but LSU "made up a significant amount of distance" in relatively short time -the paraphrasing of the Johns quote about taking visits and whether or not there would be a 5th visit added after OSU: he said after the first 3 visits its all the same and you get tired of it, he said Elbert's tired and by now "you pretty much know". Very much opposite of what we heard yesterday. I don't see this being dragged out until April, I just don't. I think this is a 2 horse race between us and LSU. The one worrisome thing to me is that Elbert seems to have a thing for LsU. He unofficially visited there in August and wanted to go back. Johns, his AAU coach is from Louisiana. Quote
ajb5856 Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 There were also some pretty pro-LSU quotes in the article but that's what you get when the LsU rivals guy does the interview. Quote

Norm Peterson Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 The black road unis he'd occasionally wear playing for Nebraska would have a much more slimming effect than purple and yellow. Those just aren't his colors. But, if he wants to clash ... The_Vault 1 Quote
ajb5856 Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 And now the Hoyas throw up a summary of all that has gone on in the recruitment of Elbert. http://nebraska.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1553980 This article from today touches on the PonyPride article from yesterday where Elbert gave the April timeframe for his commitment and talked about making a list of 6 or 7 schools. The Hoyas reporter talked to Lawrence Johns after PonyPride had interviewed Elbert. Johns said that they are trying to get organized and put the ducks in a row. Sounds like ER's camp is trying to help the big fella narrow things down and the big fella is wanting to take more time. Sounds like he truly wants to make the right decision and doesn't want to screw this up. Johns made the comment that none of this should be taken as Elbert enjoying the recruiting process too much or that hes wanting attention. Quote
Milk Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 Ohio St has another center Goodluck Okonoboh visiting with ER this weekend as well as the rest of their commits from this year's class which is among the best in the nation. Should be a good atmosphere there with the Wisconsin game. Quote

I think they list Amir Williams at 6'11" and their next biggest big is 6'8". So they can claim opportunities for immediate playing time also. Crap. Well, like I said, onto the next one. Quote

Norm Peterson Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 I fear we're getting lost in the shuffle. Nebraska is a distant memory by the time his Ohio State visit comes around and he's visiting along with a couple of Rivals 5 stars and another 4 star center. Before that there was LSU and Shaq. And before that ... Oh yeah, I remember going to Nebraska. It was cool. I think. They have a new building or something? Quote
ajb5856 Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 I have the feeling we are in this one until the end, however long it takes. Tim Miles, Kenya Hunter, and the rest of the staff knew where we stood with Elbert before they told Wacker to explore his other option(s). In the meantime, we have brought in exactly zero legitimate options to fill the big man void and to fill out our 2014 class (aside from Pinder who the coaches already knew was a huge question mark to make it academically for 2014). In the end Robinson may not choose us. But I'm not counting out Tim Miles and Kenya Hunter until this ones over. They must feel that we have better than a pretty good chance of getting Elbert on board. When it doesn't happen, we'll start over. Remember, we already have Hammond on board to lessen the pain. bobcat402 1 Quote
