How soon is it going to be before we get the first 2014 verbal commitment? We heard all last spring, and up until now basically from every recruit coming through here, "letting the process play out, enjoying my recruitment, narrowing my list down soon, not gonna make a list, committing on my birthday, committing on my moms birthday, gonna start taking official visits after evaluation periods, going to figure out what officials to take sometime in the future..."

Enough is enough. Schools get verbal commitments from recruits well in advance of signing all the time. Miles is in year 2. When are we going to bring in that top rated recruit for their visit and they just say, "enough is enough, I've seen all I need to see, this process is over for me, I'm N"?

I'm not fed up or discouraged or anything at all. Just want to know when it's going to happen because I think it will happen. Eventually.

The old saying is you can shine a turd as much as you want, its still a turd.  I love Miles, Nebrasketball, etc but put yourself in the players' shoes.  Do you take a chance on a guy like Miles at a school thats never won a tournament game and havent been there in 15 years or do I play it safe and go to a traditional school.  Its the same reasoning a lot of players chose Nebraska football over schools like KU, Minnesota, Iowa State because of tradition.  I think you have a better chance in hoops but actually getting the kids to buy in takes so much longer to somehow turn that turd into a diamond for them to finally buy in.

Schools without a commit for the 2014 class: Kansas, Marquette, Gonzaga, UCLA, Memphis, Villanova (just a start)

The 2013 recruiting cycle just ended. Official Visits will happen throughout the season.....it'll probably be months before we see a commit. Miles is still building relationships with these kids, in no way should you EXPECT to see commits this early in the year.

A few years ago, it would have been unthinkable for someone to spend over $30,000 on a brand new Kia.

Now, there are plenty of people who could by a $30,000 Buick Lacrosse who choose a $30,000 Kia Optima instead.

Nebraska isn't a turd.  Nebraska is working on its branding.  Part of that will have to involve success on the court.  Part of that is opening a new arena.  Part of that is building relationships and getting positive national press coverage in the off-season.

We have a good conference affiliation.  We have the best facilities, bar none.  We have a coach who has his own personal magnetism that will rival virtually anyone outside of the Pitinos and Caliparis of the basketball world.

At some point, a decent number of discerning buyers will choose Husker Kia over Purdue Honda.  Nick Fuller already did.

Guys, this isn't just wild-assed, pie-in-the-sky hoping.  This is optimism supported by REAL THINGS.  Tangible benefits of a Husker program.  Advantages we have over the competition.  Give it time.  We're getting our foot in the door with a higher caliber of player than in the past.  We're not going to score with every one of them.  Some of them can afford Mercedes U and we're not there yet.  But we're closing in on Volvo U and Saab U.  And I daresay we passed Suzuki U and Ford Fiesta U a while ago.

Aren't we still in the quiet period?  The next big evaluation period starts in July and our new assistant will be all over it for us.

I'm not expecting a basketball commit at this point.  I'm thinking July-August timeframe when the next evaluation time is wrapping up.

It'll happen.

I used that as a reference because to 99% of basketball people Nebraska has never been a basketball school in any facet of the word.  Its one of 3 BCS schools to have never won a NCAA tournament game, they dont draw well, they rarely win, and post season is NIT or bust for over a decade.  Its a very tough sell that has because a lot easier with the facilities, coaching upgrades, etc but its still the same Nebraska until they are able to win and sell recruits.  Yes they have Fuller but he still isnt a top 150 Rivals player even though he is on another site.  Nebraska needs to get kids that every site have top 100 to really start breaking the stigma imo.  I definitely think it will happen but to think things will happen soon its asking or expecting quite a bit.

Norm, I agree with you...it feels like some real momentum is building in the program, and that's a good thing.  It's been too long.

But we aren't all that far off from the times we were Dacia Sandero U, either:

This entire article was awesome to read, but these three parts stood out most to me as particularly interesting:

_______________

"Fuller finished his senior season weighing 200 pounds, has since put on 7 or 8 pounds, and wants to be at 215 by the time his freshman season begins.

What’s more, Fuller has proven durable. He finished his high school career having played in 99 consecutive games, and hasn’t missed a game -- varsity, youth or AAU -- since sixth grade. He played in more than 200 AAU games over four years."

_______________

"Last week, Fuller was named the Madison Sports Hall of Fame all-area sportsperson of the year. In March, he was selected as the top senior wing player by the Wisconsin Sports Network, an award won the previous season by Sam Dekker.

Dekker made the All-Big Ten Freshman team last season at Wisconsin, and some recruiting analysts think Fuller has a chance to make a similar impact at Nebraska."

_______________

"Fuller, who was recruited by former NU assistant Ben Johnson, chose Nebraska over Minnesota, which is where Johnson is now coaching."

I'm pretty sure there are only two BCS schools that have never won an NCAA tourney game (Northwestern and Nebraska).  South Florida got the monkey off their back by winning a few games in the tourney recently.

Commitments in the mid to late summer is pretty common nowadays for kids that graduate in the following spring.  Frankly, I would expect that most schools have a verbal or two before September.  Remember that unlike football, basketball has an early signing period in the fall, and that seems to be when most high schoolers commit.  I could be wrong, but I thought Doc usually got a recruit or two to commit by late summer/early fall, so I don't see any reason why you couldn't expect Miles to do the same.

Nick Fuller and Nathan Hawkins both commited on August 10, 2012.  Get this next eval period out of the way and we'll start seeing something happen.  It's still unclear how many spots we'll have to offer.  If we had 5 scholarships to give, you might hope to have some early commits.  But, with 2 or maybe 3 spots, I would expect we'll need to be patient.  Some kids don't commit until right up to signing day.
