What I will be watching for:

  • How do White"s capabilities match up to Haiby's?  What are the comparative gains and losses?
  • Will AM improve the rate of conversion of lay up attempts to made baskets?  What about the footwork necessary to get the open shot?
  • Who can best fill the void left by the departure of Izzy?
  • Will KM have more opportunities than last year to show her athleticism, drives to the basket, etc.?

I know that little of this can be assessed against the level of competition we have today.  Still, we can get some clues.

Huskers might get beat.

Well...nice exhibition win.  A lot of contributors.  Ms. White had an excellent first showing...even though it doesn't count  😁

I think the final score was 83 - 47.  Everyone seemed to get some minutes.  Allison was rooting from behind on crutches.  Maggie M. was sitting at the end of the bench.

Well done Ladies.

DWU had some nice back door cuts for scores.

i thought this would be a big game scoring wise for AM.

imo, it appears Potts and Nissley will be the two freshman that can help the most right away. Petrie looks like she is going to need the most time to adjust to the college game. i thought she was a little slow out there, but, hey, it is the first game.

Darian was a very nice get for the Huskers.

In my estimation we have 4 good starters in Shelly, White, Markowski and Potts.  Looking for the fifth at the 3 position between Krull and Moriarity in filling in for what would have been Allison's.  Potts is already my favorite to watch as she is a complete player with great court sense.

Not much to take from this type of game.  Agree that these are probably our top 4 players and I’d also throw Stewart in there despite her defensive limitations.  But Williams seems intent in using AS in a reserve role so yes, we need a fifth.  Where I disagree is with the “good to great” classification.  None of these 4 approaches being called a great college player.  Potts has potential as a frosh and White may be our best player, a great addition to the team.  But Jaz and AW seem to be the same players that they were two years ago, good but rarely great.  I keep hoping to be able to say, “Wow, Jaz and Alexis are noticeably improved this year.”  Hasn’t happened.

Listened on radio West bound on I-80.  Second quarter was horrid and we gave up too many offensive rebounds.  Matt C. commented that someone other than Markowski was going to need to rebound.  Jaz needs to get to the free throw line and we still are happy to jack up threes at an incredibly poor percentage.

On a positive note, Potts proved you can score without threes and White appears to be capable.

  • How do White"s capabilities match up to Haiby's?  It's just one game against lesser competition, but i would say that White is the often mentioned "real deal".  Defense in general, quick hands for steals, good passer, and can drive to the basket and score (looking a lot like Sam!), and she can hustle for the rebounds.   What are the comparative gains and losses?
  • Will AM improve the rate of conversion of lay up attempts to made baskets?  What about the footwork necessary to get the open shot?  A solid "no" to the first question and a "kinda" to the second.  If her lay up success doesn't improve, I hate to say this, but she shouldn't get so many opportunities.  Against good rebounding opponents, passes to her under the hoop just turn into defensive rebounds.
  • Who can best fill the void left by the departure of Izzy? Potts, Potts, Potts!  In this exhibition game, she looked to me to have as much potential as any freshman I can remember ... (excluding  Jess Shepherd)
  • Will KM have more opportunities than last year to show her athleticism, drives to the basket, etc.?  Just a couple.  Wish there had been more.

I know that little of this can be assessed against the level of competition we have today.  Still, we can get some clues.

Potts was a pleasant surprise at the 4. Coley looks lost at times, and Petrie is slow. Not impressed with Krull at all. I’m not sure she can keep up with the pace that White provides. Moriarty seems more capable of meeting that tempo. AS looked good and provides a more consistent offensive threat than AM, in my opinion, but what AM does on the boards is so valuable. White is going to provide so many people with open shots, but she is also an offensive threat herself, and I hope she takes the team on her back, and that they are all along for the ride.

Coley is a mystery.  She started the game, yet had the fewest minutes.  She struggled for floor time last year, too.  I hope she figures it out.

I too like Potts, but was equally impressed by Nissley. I don't think the speed, physicality, or caliber of competition ,is going to be a problem for her.  Stewart looked really good. She might come off the bench, but in my book, she's every bit a starter.  Not everyone can be a sixth man and be OK with it (see Leigha Brown).

Could be an entertaining year.

Moriarty needs to start. She provides some much needed size since our other guards are small.  Krull can be a settling force coming off the bench.  Sadly, Coley doesn’t appear to have taken a big step forward in her development.  But, these are impressions only after an exhibition game against an overmatched opponent.

Agreed. Listening to Amy Williams in the post conference makes me feel like they have really been asking Coley to step up in practice, and she’s just not doing it. Maybe I’m reading too much into that, but I sensed a little frustration when she was talking about the 4 spot. 100% agree that Krull should come off the bench.

Coley should had transferred to get a fresh start. We have spend too much time trying to make her a 4. I do not she much from her. Too bad really cause I think she would have been a good player if we had committed to her as a 3. Watched the replay on BTN+ and we have a lot of work to do yet. We have some good pieces in place but we need to use their strengths (AM rebounding). Petrie appears to a work in progress. Does she make it or leave early like Porter? Time will tell. White will be a valuable addition this year. Thinking more in the lines of what Weidner could be (without the 2 ACL's) than Haiby. Also agree Potts should be our 4 to start, along with Moriarty at the 3. Nissley also looks to be ready. We have the pieces to be a good team. Can they put it together?

I didn’t watch the game. Did Callin Hake get any minutes? She seems to be overlooked by us on this board. She seems to be a mystery. If I’m being honest, I’ve wondered if she’s really not a Big Ten-caliber player. At least not the level of player NU is going to need at the guard spot to compete in this absolutely brutal conference.

We finally have enough of the right kind of players to press at times.  Heck just letting Darian hound the other teams guards as they bring the ball up will get us a steal or two a game for some easy baskets.

She played quite a bit.  She lacks speed and size but is a real hustler.  For her to be a real asset coming off the bench she needs to hit her 3 point shots more consistently.

yup............agree, she is a hustler. no doubt about her effort. however, she needs to be more consistent with the three. hoping we see that improve as the season moves on.

this Coley discussion.....listen, don't want to disparage her---glad she became a husker and i cheer for her to do well when she gets her minutes. i'm not sure if it's how she is used, or, if she was a bit overrated coming out of hs, whatever. i just think you are gonna get what you see (or have seen). i think she will be kinda similar to Hake. they will have their moments, but, most likely few and far between. i sure would love to see them prove me wrong.

Agree on Coley. Not mentioned, she does seem to be a good teammate. She contributes minutes off the bench (some better than others). She contributes good minutes on the bench.  Only 5 can start, and she seems OK with that.  On a roster that seldom utilizes all scholarships allowed, we have the room. I hope she sticks it out, and graduates as a Husker.
