-----------------------------------------------------------------------

• The Nebraska women’s basketball team opens the 2018-19 regular season with a major challenge against 2018 NCAA Tournament qualifier and defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Drake on Wednesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

• Nebraska made its first appearance at Pinnacle Bank Arena with a 94-41 exhibition win over Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday. Six Huskers scored in double figures led by 13 points from freshman Leigha Brown, while fellow freshman Ashtyn Veerbeek added 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Taylor Kissinger and Nicea Eliely each added 12 points, while All-Big Ten honorees Hannah Whitish and Kate Cain both pitched in 11 points against the Lopers.

Scouting The Drake Bulldogs
• Coach Jennie Baranczyk brings arguably her best and most experienced Drake team to Lincoln to open the season on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs return 10 letterwinners, including all five starters, from a squad that went 26-8 overall and 18-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference last season. Drake earned their second straight Valley title last season and made their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

• Drake’s top six players include three seniors and three juniors who make the Bulldogs an explosive offensive team that averaged 82.4 points per game in 2017-18. Overall, Drake features two fifth-year seniors, two fourth-year seniors, two fourth-year juniors and three traditional juniors.

It will be a real good first test. Drake is experienced and ...experienced some more. Offensive powerhouse.

Our starters should be able to keep up, and maybe even set the pace.

Will be up to the bench to make this thing work tonight.  The Drake bench is good too.

Awesome performance by the Husker Ladies.  Lead Drake 29-15 at the end of one.  (Lead 14-0 before Drake even scored).  Ladies can hardly miss.  Newcomers are exceptional!

AND Drake comes Storming back on a 16-0 run. Husker Ladies shooting has suddenly gone cold. Ladies are in a real :Catfight:. Drake leads 45-36 at the half!

43% shooting percentage and 47% from 3 vs 34% & 39% for the Husker ladies (which isn't Bad for treys) are the difference.

The young ones play better defense than the oldies

OK, it's about tied...anybodys game going into the 4th qtr.    We"ll  see if Drake runs out of gas. They look a step slower...

AND Husker Ladies come storming back to within 3; 60-57 at the end of three. Drake has taken away our Lobs to Cain under the basket & Husker Ladies have had too many empty possessions. One Qtr to go. A real :Catfight::Catfight::Catfight:!

And Drake wins, 83-77.  :(  Lady Husker late Treys to tie it up, take the lead misfire at the end.

Hats off to the Drake Bulldogs, who had a successful scheme to stop lobs to Kate Cain under the basket, and collapsed 3 players into the paint stopping runs to the rim; the Huskers just had too many empty possessions.  It will be a good learning experience for the Huskers.

Drake was the better team tonight.  Cain was a nonfactor in this game.  Drake’s ball movement, player movement and old fashioned want to, was far superior.  Some substitution patterns seemed to kill our own momentum.   Should be a good teaching experience but I was disappointed in our inability to attack their defense and to rebound.

free throw % was encouraging (76.5). points off to's not so much (24-14). coach didn't sound too pleased with drake's 19 offensive rebounds. listened to game on radio with matt and jeff. they sounded so frustrated with that second quarter---and number of empty possessions in the game. didn't sound like simon played very well. some things to work on. next up.

The third qtr....geeeeze. They got way more aggressive, and we wen't into shock it looked like....over dramatic ?

Their experience in their system showed, and they run it well. Drake has some shooters that have been adapted into their system. (they look and play like Creighton ?)

We're kind of the opposite with so much inexperience...may have been the difference.

Our number of turnovers were not good. Hannah had a tough first game. Team defense is still a question. We seemed to get out hustled lots of times. They were physical.....we got pushed around with subtle little pushes and shoves. (they were trained to play that way...thet're good at it....didn't get caught by refs much)  And we fouled a lot...too much.

The big ouch of the game: The lob inside attempts to Kate were feeble, and contributed to the loss. Horrible execution. It was a turnover machine.

Sorry to be so negative.....it was just disappointing I guess. Coach has a few things to work on...I'm sure she knows it.

On the definite good side.....the newbies will be super this year... and beyond. Love their hustle and aggressiveness. Didn't make all that many mistakes for newbies. Were hot shooting at first, then cooled some. (Drake defense had some say in that)

Haidy gets a wow for sure. Absolutely great overall floor player, and she was be the best ball handler on the floor. She picked up the team when she was in at the point. Her smooth quickness allowed her to attacked the basket with ease.

While the loss was real disappointing there was some really good stuff too. The ship needs some work....Coach(es) will get to work. This kind of game was real good to see

just what she has, and how to mold the team together. We're definitely much deeper and that has it's own set of issues....getting playing time for everyone in a sensible manner.

The fun has begun.

I know it was only one game, but....    Three key returners, Whitish, Simon, and Cain, all were sluggish.  My biggest disappointment, Kate.  I was excited to see what a year in the weight room would do for her.  I didn't see any noticeable improvement in strength, verticality, or conditioning.  Still reaching for silly fouls and playing small for her size.   Hannah played so nonchalant. Is that by design? Maddie, was just "off".  Not sure where her head was.  Any chance some of the players were under the weather a bit?

The new kids were a joy to watch.  This will be an entertaining year, regardless of record.  Coach Williams has plenty of coaching ammo she can use from this game. Already looking forward to the next game.

I agree totally.  Sam Haiby will prove over time she is the best point guard on the team.  As for the team overall  unfortunately most of the veterans played like rookies but on the positive side the rookies all played like veterans.  The four of them have a big upside.

Deep breath and exhale guys.  Drake is really really good.  All 5 starters back from and NCAA tourney team and seasoned veterans who have played and won against BCS teams a lot of times previously.   Lets not start with the annual (yes it happens every single year go back and look at the posts from prior years) assement that the new kids are always better than the old.  We need them all.  Its a long season.   Kate, Hannah and Maddie will be just fine, and the new kids (who are very very good) will continue to get better and have some great games, and also have some nights where they struggle and stink it up.  It was tied with 2 min left despite our 2nd qtr melt down and despite the fact that 6 of our arguably top 9 kids are soph and freshman.  News flash our schedule is very hard.  We are likely going to lose several more games in non conference this year.
