Two things - that's great if Copeland gets to play the full year,  and is healthy. He's hasnt played a minute in scarlet and cream. And two - I agree with your logic behind upgrading talent, but beyond next year isn't guaranteed for Miles, let's work on upgrading on talent and filling holes for November, not 2018.

I believe we have enough talent.. especially if we add 1-2 pieces, that we do not need to have 4 solid signees to be a good basketball team next year.  We lose Ed and Mike and Horne and Fuller.  We are currently replacing them with Copeland (Hopefully for a full year), Palmer (Hope he is eligible) and Nana.  We get 1-2 more pieces to go along with what we have and I do not think we need to fill all four scholarships to be competitive.

I guess I come from the point of view that if we get 4 - we will have a higher margin of error. I worry about Jordy having to give us 25-30 minutes night in and out. If we use all 4 we have a higher likely hood of getting 2-3 productive players and we build depth. Let's not sit here in January wishing we had an extra guy to spell Jordy for 5 minutes.

I believe we have enough talent with the nine if everything goes well.   When was the last time we could say that about Husker hoops though.

Correct.  Which is why I would feel more comfortable with 2-3 more pieces.  However, I do not believe we need to fill all 4.  If we could... I would not complain though!

My wish list is (trying to be realistic and optimistic):

-Thomas Allen. Hopefully he sees the pieces we have and thinks he's good enough to be one of the pieces we need to take the next step.

-Tyler Mayes. We need depth and obviously the kid can score. He's a more realistic get and has a decent offer sheet. Would be a solid pick up this late in the game.

-Winthrop Grad Transfer. We need a big and he's the only one I know we've offered at this point. Hopefully between him and Tanner we can get enough production to rest Jordy.

With the players we are knowingly in on...any list without Allen is a disappointment

Tell me this though, with your honest opinion. Say we sign the 3 players above and keep the remaining 9 scholarship players. How do you feel about next season under said circumstances?

On the surface I would say we have all the requisite parts but we would still need things to go our way.   No issues with Copeland's health or availability.  No issues with Gill's health.   Development from Roby.   No truth to the Palmer rumors.   One of Allen or Akenten to come in and be able to contribute a consistent threat from outside the arc.  There's reasons for hope....but also no margin for error or hiccups.

Then again....we've had the talent to be better than we've been the last 3 years though too.

Yeah.  He saved a scholarship last year, used it to bring in a 5* power forward and then 2 power forwards quit because they wouldn't get to start or get as much playing time as they did the previous 2 years.  Boy did Miles screw up!  He should know better then to recruit people better then the current players.

Copeland may have more versatility, but Morrow was a Rodman clone.  You can't teach the instinct that Morrow had!  Please quit trying to spin that Morrow is not a huge loss.

I would like to see Morrow still here with Copeland, but hey maybe that is just me.

Losing Horne, Jacobson and Fuller is not that big of a deal if you ask me, but throwing Morrow in the mix makes losing Jacobson hurt more.

Horne

Pros

  • He can shoot
  • He is a decent rebounder

Cons

  • Terrible at decision making
  • Rushed shots
  • Wanted to be more than what he was
  • Not good at ball handling

Morrow

Pros

  • Best rebounder on the team
  • Explosive
  • Intimidating
  • Spark Plug
  • Decent Shot Blocker

Cons

  • Could not shoot
  • Predictable
  • Could not get the pass out down

Jacobson

Pros

  • Good at offensive rebounds
  • Good Free Throw Shooter
  • Excellent at effort plays

Cons

  • Poor shot selection
  • Limited athletically
  • Offensive Liability

Fuller

Pros

  • Glue Guy
  • Played harder than anyone on the team

Cons

  • Do I really need to go here?

Morrow is nothing like Rodman. Rodman was a freak athlete, ran like a gazelle, was a multiple time Defensive POY, could pass and was one of the best rebounders ever. He's a HOF'er. I liked Ed but let's not exaggerate. He's not even a poor man's Rodman.

He is like Rodman, in that he was an undersized PF that played with great effort.  Ed, like Rodman, also seemed to understand angles and put himself in a position to grab rebounds.   But Rodman was a Tasmanian Devil when it came to defending.  He also was a better shooter than often given credit for, but he was not asked to shoot, and horror of horrors, accepted his role on the team.

Ed gives good effort but I wouldn't compare him to an all-time great in that area. He's strong and can jump--that helps him with rebounding. I'd say that is the key to his rebounding--not knowing angles and basketball IQ.  And Ed sure as hell isnt out there diving around, sacrificing his body and taking charges--what I would call effort plays.

Ugh, why can't he be eligible next year. Is there a rule that since he transferring within the same system of colleges, he can be eligible right away.

I was hoping he could take a ton of classes this summer and graduate

I read that Jordan Mathews passed 18 credit hours to go from Cal to Gonzaga as a grad transfer. It's possible, however unlikely it may seem.

Found a story to document the trek of former Nebrasketball assistant Phil Mathews' son: http://www.californiagoldenblogs.com/2017/3/25/15062724/jordan-mathews-gonzaga-bulldogs-california-golden-bears-basketball-final-four

Guessing Thurman gets a lot better as a player if he ends up here

I've enjoyed watching Tre-Shawn get better year-by-year at Omaha for the past 3 years. I think he'll be up for the challenge of high-level Div. 1 ball.

Take it for what it's worth but the guard that's visiting this week and the center next week have both committed and waiting for visits to finalize.  This comes from the same guy who told me miles was heading to New Mexico

That provides us with a lot of confidence :)
