On paper, 2011 looks solid! But the problem there is he was recruiting a player who was never going to be on the team (Starling) and several of the other high-star guys have proven to be mediocre at best (or have transferred already). At quick glance it feels like half the four-star recruits from 2010 and 2011 aren't even on the team anymore (and not because they were good enough to be drafted early). Which means we're having to rely on low-level talent to make up for the high-talent guys who aren't here anymore or who haven't panned out.
Heck, Steinkuhler was our last 5-star guy (and my dog could have recruited him to Nebraska) and played out of position for his entire tenure (our coaches even admitted he would be an NFL offensive tackle). That kind of recruiting performance shouldn't happen here.
Throw Pelini's whining in the press about how hard it is to recruit to Nebraska in the mix, and I have a terrible taste in my mouth for his recruiting results and attitude.
I admire the fact that Pelini has put together the wins he has DESPITE of recruiting, but I agree that the recruiting looks bad based on draft results.
You're right about the whining- it is what it is. At the same time he's right. Why come to Nebraska? To play in the Big 10, which has lost a lot of credibility in the last few years? The weather? The tradition? We're getting close to the point where these players weren't even alive during the glory years...
Baker got shafted by playing DL instead of OL. It's great he made the switch to help the teams success, but at what cost to him personally?
