Miles is retained what does the team look like
kldm64 replied to Ron Mexico's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Also a 10th place finish, an 11th place finish and two 12th place finishes and a 13th place finish this year. Overall conference record is 52 - 76 (.406%). So we have been battling for last place in 5 of his first 7 years. ZERO post season wins No question he has increased the talent level but it's not translating to wins on the court. Moos really don't have much of a decision. He either has to go "all in" with Miles or go a different direction. Based on those stats, what would you do? -

Or it could be much better. I'm not hitching my wagon to a coach that is well under .500 in league play after 7 seasons. -
I don't see any scenario that we get in short of winning the Big 10 tournament. Even making it to the finals and losing won't do it.
-
I was in Roby's shoes, I'd leave but selfishly, I hope he comes back as really like watching this kid play.
-
Just to be clear, when you are saying 3rd round, that is really the 2nd round. CU has never won 2 games in the tournament. They at least get there but they have always been a one and done program.
-
Probably not going to get an NIT invite anyway so it won't even be a decision.
-
This is why I have a man crush on Roby #robyisgood

I don't think there is any question, this state likes Tim and was pulling extremely hard that he was the guy to get this program where we all want it to be. However, you can't keep a coach just because he is a likeable personality. The results are what they are. It's time to shake hands and part ways and like many of us, wish nothing but success for Coach Miles where ever he ends up at.

You are actually making a case to fire Miles. Every year, we have enough talent to win and every year, it seems like we have an excuse why it doesn't happen. That has been the motto of NU basketball for years is "wait till next year". This year was going to be our "next year" and it totally collapsed under Miles. Even losing Copeland, this team had enough talent to win games and Miles hasn't gotten the job done. Both years under Miles that we actually had high expectations (the year following our NCAA bid and this year) have both been huge disappointments. Miles can't seem to capitalize on his own success. Miles was deemed a program building coach but it is clear that Craig Smith was the reason for much of that success. Miles is 1 game over .500 right now in 7 years with 1 NCAA bid and that was only because we got hot down the stretch. I'm ready to take a step backwards if it finally means 2 steps forward for this program. If Miles can't win with this the talent on the team this year, I see no indication he would win with the talent on next year's team as well. If we are returning as much talent as you mention, then it shouldn't be a total rebuild for a new coach. I also think season tickets sales would drop dramatically if Miles was retained. -
Those are both good examples but if those are the only 2 players over the past 7 years that have developed and improved under Miles (those are all I can think of as well), that is not a good sign.
-
Some brackets already have them listed as next 4 out right now so they can easily play their way in (which sucks). Even with our 7 game losing streak, if we would have finished the job and beat Minnesota and Maryland on the road like we should have, we'd probably still be in the field right now. Amazing what a difference a game or two can do to your season.
-
Creighton is currently 16 - 13 so if they win their last 2 games (which they should), it puts them at 18 - 13 instead of 19- 12. If they win a couple games in the Big East tournament, they could finish the year at 20 - 14. They are like NU last year, they don't really have any quality wins on their resume though but they could still be in the conversation to get in. Heck, this might be a year that Creighton and UNO both get in and NU don't make any post season. Wouldn't that be a kick in the groin.

uneblinstu's postgame chatter: vol 11; ed 29 - @ Michigan

I'd say the same thing if I was a coach that gets to coach against him and pick up a win every year. -
No, it wouldn't be hard to fire him even under that scenario. Getting hot for the final games of the year won't overshadow the failures he has had over the past 7 seasons. He has done less with more talent than any coach we have had here.

You obviously never played sports. If you are a competitor, you never concede anything.

Most brackets either have us in or listed as "first 4 out". At this point, we don't need any more quality wins (although it would help) but we just need more wins on our resume. We have 6 games left. If we can go 4-2 in that stretch, I think it might be enough to get in. if we go 3-3, we'd need to win a few games in Big 10 tournament. If we go 2-4, we need to win the Big 10 tournament to get in.
-
Miles will not be retained regards of how the season finishes. AD is looking for consistency in the program and it has been anything but that the past 7 years. So even if we get hot down the stretch and still make The Dance, we will have a new coach next year. Miles overall resume after 7 years doesn't warrant him getting an 8th season.

???

That is true for last year but overall, if you look at the top 10 highest attended spring games ever, NU comes in at #8 with Ohio State taking the top 3 spots followed by Georgia at #4 and then Alabama #5 - #7. NU is 8th followed by Alabama and Auburn.
-
Very well written. I have the same feeling. I was and to some degree still am a big Miles guy. He seems to say all the right things that make you believe things will get better and yet they just never did. He is handling this situation with class and still working hard to make the tournament. Obviously, we need to get hot to finish the year starting now but the rankings still like us. No matter what happens, I wish nothing but success for Coach Miles in where ever he ends up.

Selling out the stadium and best fans are not the same thing. Selling out a spring game is a "fan" thing that this state likes to pat themselves on the back for. There are other spring games that draw more fans. No question the Nebraska fan base is a proud one but overall, there are better fans that are louder and just as devoted to their team. That was my point
-
Love that Nebraska fans are the "self proclaimed" best fans in the country. Guess when the football and basketball teams are horrible, you have to have something to pat yourself on the back about. There are much better fan bases than Nebraska but you can never convince anyone from inside this state of that fact.

No, but do we know for a fact that he won't? Nobody is a lock to do well here as we've learned the last 100 years. I'm sure it would be very uncomfortable for him but hard to turn down an opportunity to coach in a major conference. If Miles is truly his friend, he would be happy and support his decision and rise in the coaching ranks.
