Huskers to Honor Griffin Before Wednesday Clash with Michigan

The Nebraska women’s basketball team will honor Husker legend Kelsey Griffin Wednesday night in pregame ceremonies before the Big Red takes on Michigan in a key Big Ten battle.

Tip-off between the Huskers and Wolverines is set for 7 p.m.

Nebraska is coming off a 63-59 loss at Northwestern on Sunday that came down to the final seconds. While the Huskers are hungry for a win to close January, the Wolverines will be looking to remain unbeaten in true road games this season while shooting for their fourth straight Big Ten road win.

Michigan improved to 3-0 on the road in conference play with a 60-44 win at Wisconsin. Coach Kim Barnes Arico and Michigan carry a 14-6 overall record and a 5-2 Big Ten mark to Lincoln for Wednesday night’s battle with Nebraska.

The Wolverines return just one starter and just three letterwinners from last year’s squad that went 22-11 overall and 9-7 in the Big Ten on their way to the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament in Barnes Arico’s first season in Ann Arbor.

Nebraska leads the all-time series with Michigan 7-1.

    Probable Starters:

    Nebraska Cornhuskers

    3 - Hailie Sample - 6-1 - Jr. - F - 5.8 ppg

    23 - Emily Cady - 6-2 - Jr. - F - 14.2

    35 - Jordan Hooper - 6-2 - Sr. - F - 19.1

    33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - So. - G - 13.2

    1 - Tear’a Laudermill - 5-9 - Jr. - G - 9.2

    Michigan Wolverines

    14 - Nicole Elmblad - 5-11 - Jr. - F/G - 12.2 ppg,

    22 - Cyesha Goree - 6-3 - Jr. - F - 11.3

    34 - Val Driscoll - 6-4 - Sr. - F/C - 4.9

    2 - Siera Thompson - 5-7 - Fr. - G - 13.5

    5 - Shannon Smith - 5-7 - Jr. - G - 14.7

Jordan Hooper enters Wednesday night’s game needing five points to catch Kelsey Griffin at No. 3 on Nebraska’s career scoring list at 2,033. Hooper needs 10 rebounds to become the fourth Husker in history with 1,000 rebounds.

Emily Cady leads the conference through six league games with 11.7 rebounds per contest while ranking in the top 10 in scoring (15.7 ppg) Cady leads the Big Ten with nine double-doubles on the season, including five straight in conference action. Teammate Jordan Hooper ranks second in the league in double-doubles with eight.

Nebraska ranks No. 9 nationally with 73,782 fans at home this season. The Huskers rank 11th nationally with an average home attendance of 5,676 per game. The Huskers drew 10 of the top-16 non-conference home crowds in school history this season, including a record 9,750 vs. UCLA.

Kelsey Griffin's jersey will be hoisted up in the rafters before the game so be there early. I just can't help but think there isn't a more deserving player and representive of Husker women's basketball to have their number hang on the wall of PBA than Kelsey's #23. She's has done more for this program than any other player to put it on the map to be where it is today!

Get there and give Mo' the respect she so richly deserves!

Huskers hanging onto a good lead--it's 30-20... make that 33-20!  You betcha!  Then a Theriot steal... and a basket!  35-20, timeout Michigan!

The Bank is going crazy from what I hear on the radio!

28 seconds left in the first, and the Huskers are up 42-26 with the ball after Connie uses a timeout.  Let's get a good shot and regain the 18-point lead!

I feel like Kelsey's jersey retirement ceremony really lit a spark on the team.  Hopefully this carries to the second half, and the remainder of the season!

Since Kelsey is the hallmark of mental toughness, maybe it will rub off on the team!  It certainly seems to tonight!

We looked good on Kelsey Griffin night!

Where was this team in Evanston last Saturday? I think Michigan came in here thinking they could walk away with a win, but once we got rolling they knew different.

Speed kills!  Teara' Laudermill with her best game of the year tonight.

Dare we say JHoop is out of her slump? Time will tell. If she plays, well and is hitting her shots we're a good team. Couldn't believe the assists to made baskets tonight. 26 assists to 32 made buckets! Too bad Emily's double/double streak had to end tonight. Glad to see little Sadie hit that 3 pointer!

Everyone pitched in, including 11 assists from Theriot, who had a double-double.  While not having a lot of stats, I thought Jeffrey played steady.  Steady usually isn't her game, so props to her.  We need to get at least one of the next two on the road.

You could see just how much Kelsey Griffin means to this program by watching her before, at halftime and after the game especially at the half. She had all sorts of fans following her up one side of the court and back the other. Great ceremony for her tonight!

She looked good! I think Coach Shimmy must have picked out her outfit!

Hooper played so much more under control and didn't press.  She let the game come to her and it helped her performance dramatically.

And it looked Hoops shot had more arch on it as did her free throws, So maybe she was in a funk.
