Can we somehow make Gil eligible this year...there has to be a loophole to exploit

If we only get Gill for 2 years, we want those 2 years to start next year.

i can dream tho right..

these are our best 5 guys right now, but i don't think i've ever seen them all on the floor at the same time.

pg. watson

sg white

sf mcveigh

pf shields

c morrow.

Miles says "you are what you cover."  In other words, he identifies players by the defensive assignment rather than the offensive one.  I see McVeigh as more of a small forward/wing than a power forward right now.  He just isn't beefy enough to be a B1G big, though he might be able to get there over time.  His length, though, allows him to make up a bit for a current lack of foot speed.

Having said all of that, though, I'm not sure Jack is ready to enter the starting lineup.  And I don't think White is really a 2.  For that matter, Morrow isn't really a 5, either, but he's going to give us more being in that spot than what we're probably going to get out of Hammond, unfortunately.

So, I'd say move Benny out of the starting lineup in favor of Watson.  Or move Tai out in favor of Watson.  Either way, Watson probably needs to start.

Start Ed at the 5 and then let Shavon and Andrew deal with the 3/4 spots.

And I don't know who to recommend at the 2.

Johnny Trueblood?

(Bobcat402 is outta here.)

Bobcat, been nice knowing you....   :)

I was worried my little attempt at humor went, shwooop, right past people there.

Thanks for catching the joke, HB.  :)

As long as we're dreaming, try dreaming up a way for him to have three more years of eligibility.

Watson - Parker/Trueblood

Sheilds - Evelyn

White - Webster

Morrow - Jacobson/Fuller

Jacobson/Hammond/Fuller - 15 fouls

It's not like going with the young guys would be considered  sacrificing this season for the future.

Getting the ball in ASAP minimizes the effectiveness of a press big time. Whoever gets the ball gets out of bounds and gets it in to whoever is open. Then that person passes it back to the in bounds person as he runs full speed to attach the D.

EXACTLY! I wish I could ask Miles his thought process on why he wants a certain guy inbounding, because right now I don't see the benefit at all

I don't think Watson can play more than 25 minutes a game, unless you want him completely worn out halfway through the season. So if you sub Benny for him with Shavon or AW at the 2, does it work?  They went with that backcourt lineup twice in the first half for two possessions, and both ended with Benny turnovers and neither looked good at all.  So if Watson goes out you're pretty much stuck playing Tai and Benny together, and we've seen how well that's worked in the past.

I think it's only a short amount of time before Watson is starting.  Seems like Miles didn't want to start right away because he's a true frosh, but it's clear that he's our best option at that spot.

No McVeigh?  He needs to be on the floor more than he is right now.  He can shoot the three ball and surprisingly has done well banging on the boards.  He is not the fastest guy on the court but he appears to have good fundamentals on defense and should only get better.

What I saw from the Nova game and previous games where we are getting pressed is Miles likes to have 2 ball handling guards bringing the ball up so they have to wait for the other guard to come down to the baseline and take the ball out. I completely agree that we need to just have whoever is closest take the ball out and throw it in to whoever is the point. Also I doesn't seem to my novice eyes that having the guys along the sidelines running down the court is helping with the press break. In high school whenever we were faced with a press similar to Nova's we ran someone to mid court to open up some passing lanes so maybe send Shields or White in there? Just spit balling.

I am still ok with the starters, but maybe adjust the minutes a little more. Lil more Watson, maybe throw in some Evelyn. I'm not ready to anoint Trueblood the second coming based off of 10 minutes against an undersized, less athletic D2 school. Maybe toss in some Tanner, he can foul just as good as the guys we're running out at the 5 right now.

Hope that doesn't make me sound too pessimistic. I still really like this team and (so far) it's been fun cheering for a team that could end up being really good but I'm not heaping tons of expectations on.

Leaving McVeigh off was an error on my part. He would be in my first 3 coming off of the bench list.
