So my buddy got back to me.  Nothing too earth shattering from what we all know about Atewe from those that have followed him.  He said Atewe is still very raw offensively as he disappeared at times only to show a great post move here and a thunder dunk there to question where did that come from.  He is, right now, a defensive stalwart in the middle.  He said he was great on the boards, deflected shots, and basically when he sat in the paint he directed traffic to stay out of the lane and just penetrate and kick out.  Keeps iterating they don't really run the ball through him much and that with some good coaching the potential is there because he said he kept seeing flashes.  He said his body is well put together though which would be nice to bang with the bigs in the B1G.

My friend is a big NotreDame/UCONN/Big East fan so his thoughts were he's a solid player that  would be a formidable 4 in a traditional line-up and 5 in a small run and gun offense.  He watches a ton of hoops and attends probably 25-35 prep games a year as well as a season ticket holder for UCONN so he watches a lot of good hoops.

Great info, thanks for posting.  The praise of his defensive ability makes me more confident that he could provide some minutes for us as early as next year.

read the article in the local paper saying the win over #1 Massanutten was sparked by the defense of Atewe.

This article is sort of like watching your girlfriend with another guy...but nevertheless, I thought I would share it.

Whats nice though is Nevada has moved into a better conference and fallen flat on their face.  The only other player they have signed this season, DJ Fenner, is a taller version of Benny Parker so its not like they have a stellar recruiting class coming in around him.  I still think we have everything going for us with a stellar class, facilities, and bright future.

Nevada bloggers think this quote speaks well for them when discussing immediate playing time....

“That plays a huge part, too, the chance to play right away,” said
Atewe, who turns 19 on Thursday and already has a college-ready body.
“That’s something I’m looking for, plus Coach Carter has shown he can
develop big guys. Getting the opportunity to play right away is
definitely something I’m looking at.”

"Nevada's top three post players, Kevin Panzer, Devonte Elliott and Ali
Fall, have all struggled this season and will be seniors next year. The
Wolf Pack could use a true post player."

If having three big men who will be seniors is great...then having no returners must be MA's idea of Nirvana.

So, I have no idea what Atewe is going to do.  Fact the Miles seems to be looking around provides no comfort that they're confident in landing him.  He visited Charlotte this weekend (when Charlotte got it's 20th win.)  Looked at Charlotte's roster.  They have two freshmen PFs.  One is averaging about 8 and 6 and the other is averaging about 6.5 and 5.  And they're freshmen.  And one is averaging a hair over 22 minutes and the other a hair under 19.  They have more returning size than we do.

Based on nearly every standard Matthew has articulated publicly, the Huskers should be a lock.  Heck, in his interview, he said he is in regular contact with Tai Webster, Nathan Hawkins and Nick Fuller--all three of them.

. . .  but he's still taking visits.

The wild card in all this is Matthew's "mentor."  We've never heard a public comment from him.  And it seems we've never had a full explanation on what's going on behind the scenes.

. . .  and Tim Miles is apparently still looking at backups.

The irritating thing about all this is that Norm had a point all along--Matthew may fill a defensive need but is not exactly a five-star (heck, he's a two-star on ESPN).  However, Matthew may have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

. . .  and now cue up Kamdy's defense . . .

LOL yep my defense. sooo funny.  Thats right because we only have one scholarship for next year.  Oh thats right Leslee smith has an offer.  SO swan want to make a wager on Atewe?

Kamdy, are you saying that Smith now has an offer from Nebraska? If so, either he is the 5th scholarship or Atewe is headed somewhere else! Not sure I like it either way!

no everything was sarcasm as we have two scholarships for this next year and no to Leslee.  Just Swan and me as he has this idea built in that a kid that cant sign for over a month from now has to have his decision made today, and gosh forbid he decides he wants to use free trips to places he has built a relationship with and wants to make sure he is making the right decision.  He very much loves Nebraska and may have said something I have kept quiet to my friend when he told him GBR  and hope he chooses them, for me, when he saw him last week as I want to wait until its official and not just him blowing smoke to appease my buddy.

Hmmm...I love unconfirmed inside info!!! Lol. I hope what your buddy heard was true! If so, that means Smith is an option for the 5th scholarship. Otherwise why would Coach Miles visit him? Certainly his size, at 250 lbs, is needed!

We have another schollie coming open from my understanding. Someone had already indicated they won't be back.

You don't have to say who....but where or who did you hear this from?  Just curious....I have a good idea of who it is as I have heard something as well.

I haven't heard anything and this is a private forum, so you can you guys just say who you are talking about?

I was talking with an AD member at the TO tribute. They wouldn't state who just that someone had asked shortly after the first of the year to look at other options.

I think the obvious two would be Parker (writing on the wall with the talented guards coming in) or Vucetic.

My gut says the latter. But that's probably based on being a little disappointed in how raw he ended up being and I'm not sure that he's developing as fast as anticipated.
