Still not buying that we are getting the full story of what's actually going on behind the scenes. It seems more probable every day that Matthew is a back-up plan for Nebrasketball and that Charlotte is the back-up plan for Matthew.

I think its just you reading too far into a situation.  From everything he's said on rivals and from those who speak to him like Robin he is very detailed with making sure he is making the right decision. You have to remember he no longer has a mother and has spent the last 3+ years living in the United States during the school year and traveling all summer with AAU, away from any family in Canada.  He doesnt seem to care one bit about the glitz and glam and wants to find a place that will more than anything be his home for the next 4-5 years regardless of how well the team, facilities, etc may be.  From reading his most recent update from Auburn you see the same thing in stories about UNCC and Nebraska how he talks to at least one of the coaches daily, it felt like home, and really likes the people.  I feel Atewe is just completely different from every other recruit you read about today and that is why people probably feel he isn't the "top choice" because he is possibly pushing back his commitment date.

One interesting thing I noticed was that the guy who appears to be his "handler" or at least someone with strong influence, Vidal Massiah, recently tweeted something that Kamdy has said about Atewe's experience at Notre Dame prep:  "More than any other position,if ur a big man u really NEED to pick the right school. So many HS/college programs dont play/prepare their bigs."

So, the guy who seems to be mentoring Atewe tweets that a big man especially needs to pick the right school.  Think about what Kamdy has said about Atewe's experience at Notre Dame prep.  That it isn't a place that fits his skills and that he maybe isn't getting the best development there.  Or the best coaching.  He can't leave now and go elsewhere.   Too late for that.  BUT ... he can choose his college wisely.

My guess is that's what he's doing.  He's being very careful to make sure that he makes a better choice for college than he appears to have made for prep school.  Where will he develop?  Which program suits his skills?  Is that us?  I'd say we have a good argument that this program fits the kind of opportunity he needs/wants.

I disagree. The staff likes Atewe a lot and wants him badly. He is not a back-up plan. He's just taking his time. This comes from a good source.

"Handler" / "mentor" . . . Say what!!??

No one has ever mentioned a "handler" or "mentor" for Atewe before, that I've seen. He came to Lincoln without anyone accompanying him.

A handler / mentor is often bad news--often looking out for his/her own interests as much as for the recruits. Is this the same guy who got him to transfer to the current prep school, that apparently isn't working out so well?

A handler/mentor changes the entire equation and can certainly account for unpredictable and incomprehensible behavior.

The guy (Vidal Massiah) is just his AAU coach from Canada. I'd call him an adviser/mentor. Most kids have someone like that, whether it be a HS coach, AAU coach or whatever.

Look at his tweets, Swan.  He tweets back and forth with this Massiah guy and, at one point, made the comment that there are people who THINK they know what he's going to do but not to listen to those people because the only people who REALLY know are him and Vidal Massiah.  And then there was a later tweet where Atewe said something to the effect of "according to @VidalMassiah, I'm down to these five schools."  Massiah retweeted that tweet with an LOL.  So, I think it was intended as kind of a joke, but I think Atewe is serious about taking advice from the Massiah dude.

People are looking into this way too much. We are still the heavy favorites to get him, and we'll be fine either way.

Well, that may be.  But it's either look into this way too much or try to formulate scenarios where Nebraska gets into a post-season tournament.  Yeah, see what I mean?  So, this it is.  ;)

Apparently there's this Matt Atewe kid we're looking at?  A big for the class of 2013?  Anyone heard anything about him?

(P.S.  I thought 26 pages was enough.  ;) )

Resistance is futile  ;)

What's happening right now with the Big East and the A10 defections is very good for Nebraska with Atewe but bad for Charlotte. How attractive is playing in an A10 conference minus Butler, Xavier, St. Louis and Dayton? Not very IMO.

My buddy is going to the national prep championships this week and Atewe is playing in the first game today and will let me know how he did.

Awesome

They have a tough task as they drew the #1 seed Massanutten Military Academy.  They have 5* Terry Rozier and a bunch of 3*'s heading to schools like Kansas, Miami, Utah, and Boston College. Atewe will be matched up with Maryland commit Damonte Dodd.  Hopefully its a future B1G matchup for the two of them as well.

Atewe really likes how Nevadas coach develops big men. He will visit there March 15-17. He also likes the fact that out of his remaining schools, Nevada has the most guys in the NBA.

So much for that birthday commit thing.

He said he was pushing it out last month to get in all 5 visits before he commits.  I'd rather a kid wait an extra couple weeks to know he made the correct decision other than make one and wonder if it was the right call.

Matthew Atewe visited Nebraska on January 6, 2013.  It's taken him two full months to come up with visits to Charlotte and Nevada, despite the birthday non-deadline and despite supposedly flirting with some of the big-name schools.  Go figure.

He has school and is in season.  Its not like he can just skip school and games to go on recruiting trips.  You have to remember they dont have a league like Omaha where everything is in town.  They play their games throughout the entire northeast and travel extensively.  I think you just want to make mountains out of mole hills on Atewe.

As a FYI Notre Dame knocked off the #1 Prep school Massanutten yesterday.  My buddy said Atewe was a beast defensively via text and would elaborate more later.

So my buddy got back to me.  Nothing too earth shattering from what we all know about Atewe from those that have followed him.  He said Atewe is still very raw offensively as he disappeared at times only to show a great post move here and a thunder dunk there to question where did that come from.  He is, right now, a defensive stalwart in the middle.  He said he was great on the boards, deflected shots, and basically when he sat in the paint he directed traffic to stay out of the lane and just penetrate and kick out.  Keeps iterating they don't really run the ball through him much and that with some good coaching the potential is there because he said he kept seeing flashes.  He said his body is well put together though which would be nice to bang with the bigs in the B1G.

My friend is a big NotreDame/UCONN/Big East fan so his thoughts were he's a solid player that  would be a formidable 4 in a traditional line-up and 5 in a small run and gun offense.  He watches a ton of hoops and attends probably 25-35 prep games a year as well as a season ticket holder for UCONN so he watches a lot of good hoops.

Great info, thanks for posting.  The praise of his defensive ability makes me more confident that he could provide some minutes for us as early as next year.
