So i just got done talking to my buddy that follows recruiting big time and lives in CT and goes to watch about 30-40 games a year with all the prep schools out there and plans on seeing ND Prep 2-3 times in the next two months.  He said the issue with Notre Dame was with last years class. 2 players Myles Davis and Sam Cassell had issues with NCAA requirements and must sit this year.  My friend said he doesnt think it has much necessarily to do with the school as maybe the players and they just happened to be at the same time.  They are being talked about because again they have a player this year that will probably be ineligible in Jaylen Brantley but apparently hes been an academic risk for a few years which is why he has so few teams listed for him.  I guess this is why people are shying away from players because of peoples fear its the school and not just the players failing.

Thanks KambyMan. Clears it up for me! Very good news! Has your friend seen Atewe play before? If so, any comments?

He remembers him but nothing much.  He also only saw him last year backing up Stevens Adams a 5* thats now at Pitt so his minutes were limited.  I'll get reports when he sees him over the next month.

Looks like Mr. Atewe truly wants to take all his visits. And it appears that he might be a more attractive prospect than we've heretofore believed, if the UCONN visit is a genuine opportunity for him.

Anyway, if his opportunity for playing time is truly a factor, UCONN is not a very good fit for him, considering that they have three freshmen and one sophomore standing 6' 8" or 6'9", one of whom is a Rivals 5 star. That's all in addition to a 7'1" junior center and a 6'7" junior guard/forward. Plus, they have a signed letter of intent from a 6'8" power forward in the 2013 class.

My guess is its an unofficial.  UCONN is only 90 miles from where he goes to school.  Its a chance to go watch some good basketball and see what they have to offer.  Until he gets an offer I wouldnt think much else than it being feeling out process.

And remember, he got a call from a Duke assistant!  ;)

Now he's going to watch a game at UConn.  :o

That settles it, Swan.  You've convinced me.  :D

A quick perusal of UConn message boards suggests that they feel themselves in need of a big to close out their class.  Kinda like us.  They've nailed their coach down with a contract extension which they think gives them more stability for recruiting purposes but the decline of the Big East is a problem and they've been rejected by the ACC and think Conference USA will hurt recruiting.

Nevertheless, common theme (though little is mentioned about Atewe) is that they need a big to close out this class.

Yay!!  It's about time.  You're a tough one, Norm.  :)

Not UConn again.  Calhoun screwed us out of Will Harris a few years back and then kicked Harris to the curb when he decided he could get a better player.  Meanwhile, we get shat on.  I hate Calhoun.  UConn, you stay away from our recruit.

calhoun doesn't coach at UCONN anymore

I think it's close to 80% that Atewe comes here. The only way I don't see him coming is if a big time school were to offer him in the next month. He seems like too big a risk for a big time school to want him though. Atewe has a lot to learn but does have all the physical tools. Nebraska is the perfect school for him though because NU just needs him to play defense next year. We should have plenty of scorers next year. I feel like Ray, Webster, biggs, shields, petteway, Rivers, Fuller, and Pitchford are all capable of being solid scorers. Parker, Vucetic, Atewe, and Hawkins probably won't be relied on as much for scoring.

I currently am a Sophomore at UConn so let me give you some background on why we would be interested in signing Atewe.

1. Because of the sanctions, we lost 4 of our bigs. Drummond (draft) Michael Bradley (Transfer) Alex Oriakhi (Transfer) Roscoe Smith (Transfer). We need big bodies.

2. The bigs we are left with currently are softer than a bowl of ice cream sitting in the street in the middle of July. Wolf is terrible and Olander is at best a 15/20 minutes per game stretch 4 who comes off the bench to provide something different. Without Oriakhi, we have nobody who can protect the rim- which is why Atewe is so important.

I think it makes sense for us to try and land him. Agau I didn't think filled a need for UConn and I'm glad he didn't come here (although I'm not happy he's at Louisville). Atewe fills a need definitely, but I don't know if Kevin Ollie (KO) has taken a serious look at him yet. KO wants the guards to play in your face man to man pressure on the perimeter,  which leaves you vulnerable to getting beat off the dribble, which is why he needs Atewe to be at the rim to protect.

I'd say it's a safe bet that we need him more.

Another thing to consider is that in another couple years, the Big East is going to be a POS hoops conference (having already lost West Virginia, losing the catholic schools, Notre Dame 'Cuse, Pitt, and Louisville) and there's a possibility that the Big East isn't going to exist at all.

Who wouldve though we would get 14 pages on a recruit.

If we combined all the threads on Agau, I'm sure it would be much, much longer than 14 pages.

(Which is argument #1 in favor of having the recruiting sub-forum, so we don't have dozens of threads started for each high-profile prospect.  It seems like Gesell had about three new threads every week started about him on the old board.)

Agau is much better than Atewe right now. Not even close. His upside might be as good as Agaus, but you would be crazy not to want Agau right now. Agau would start for NU and UCONN next year where Atewe will likely max out at 15 minutes off the bench. Atewe should be solid by the time he is a junior if he develops some offense.

I'm just talking about in terms of a pure fit. Would it have been nice to have had Agau commit to UConn? Absolutely. However I'm more upset that we lost him to Louisville who we have to play next year than I am that we lost him in general. I think he reminds me a lot of DeAndre Daniels, who we have on our roster. Atewe would be a bigger get purely off of need. When I say I'm glad he didn't come here, I'm more talking for his sake, since I think he wouldn't have had the minutes he was looking for/he would be used like Daniels in this system, which really isn't saying much considering what DeAndre Daniels has shown this year.
