GATA
What are everyone''s expectations of Atewe if he does get here? His videos kind of concern me, but there must be something to him if he has over 30 D1 offers. Vucetic had some big offers too, but I had no idea what to expect from him because he had no high school videos. Maybe he can come in and play 10 minutes a game as a freshman, but I wouldn't expect him to be a "major" contributor right out of the gate. Hopefully he can give us some good minutes as a defensive player/rebounder.

He wasnt a scorer for them but a big rebounder blocked shot guy. I think thats what he will be in college while developing a post game. I think thats what we truly need. Right now we have plenty of players that cant produce offensively but provide defense. I think those roles reverse next year as the PG spot, as well as the sg and sf spot increasing offense, where we can use the center spot for a guy that is more defensively minded. Haha he wouldn't be the first to get a double-double doing that. I got a one of those in high school and shot 4-12 from the floor. Great performance... The kid is obviously a terrific athlete and worthy of the scholarship attention for that reason alone. You don't see a lot of guys with his size and strength who can run like he can. He's just a physical specimen. However, he's also raw. And he needs to develop. Bigs take longer to develop than guards. You can take a big with the expectation that he'll need some time to develop. He's not going to come in next year and be a polished presence. He has some learning to do. But I could see him coming in and giving us some good freshman minutes next year (if he comes.) I've been teasing Swan back and forth about whether he's any better than Keith Coleman, our recruit from last year who ended up at North Texas. I've never said don't recruit the kid. But my uneducated, non-expert view is that we should temper our expectations for what he'll be able to bring to the table in his first season. All teasing aside, here is what we know for sure that Matthew can do: play defense, block shots, block out, rebound, run the floor, hit bunny shots and dunk. No one ever said he is good at dribbling, passing, or shooting beyond bunny shots. Apparently, Tim Miles and Co. are convinced that Matthew's defense, shot blocks, blocking out, rebounding, running the floor and close-in scoring are the priorities for this particular scholarship. Was Akoy a higher priority prospect for this position? Of course. But that ship sailed away. And since Nebrasketball put all its eggs in the Akoy basket for a very long time, we are now focused on a very athletic but raw-with-the-ball-in-his-hands alternative (I've called it the "curse of Akoy"). Norm Peterson
I think we can say he has the potential to be able to play defense, block shots, block out, rebound and hit bunny shots. Most recent video I saw of him, I wouldn't exactly say those things were anything more than potential. He has very high upside. I'll grant you that. But can he do those things you listed now? On a D1 kind of level? Not exactly from what I've seen. With a summer to work with Coach Miles and all next fall to continue to develop, he could certainly be serviceable by next year. But it's not like, "if only he could shoot, dribble and pass, he'd be the complete package." His game is not quite to that level yet.
FredsSlacks
I hope we find a way to bring in a JUCO or Transfer forward along with Atewe. I don't think it is a good idea to have 2 very raw players in Atewe and Vucetic on the same team with the only other option being Pitchford. Silverbacked1
I look at Rivers and I don't see him getting much heavier. His body is not built to add much more weight, muscle or other wise. I think he is a kid that just won't put on more weight. Some people (I've heard) actually have trouble putting on weight. Silverbacked1
One of my sons is like Rivers. Eats about anything he wants and lots of it, lifts some weights and does physical labor as a job. He is 6'4" 205. Was 6'4" 200 a year ago. Is also 21, and has been going to the bars. Now could we put weight on him? Sure if he was doing all the protein powders and lifting. But it would be hard and it would take a loooooong. His body just likes where he is at right now. My other son is lucky to be like me. He thinks about something to eat and he gains weight, and not in a good way.

Looks like Miles wants to hand out at least two 'ships for next (2014) year's recruiting class. Having said that, we'd still have room for a graduate transfer guy EVEN IF we take Atewe. Having an Atewe and a Pitchford (and maybe a Vooch in the mix) gives us about what we've got this year, albeit a lot more athletic, a lot less experienced, and a lot less skilled. I just hope there's a graduate transfer who fits the bill.

Take a big body even if he only provides us a few minutes. Its a one year gamble that we otherwise wouldnt have gotten anything out of holding out another year for the ship. Vooch may be out if Mlies thinks he is too big a project, and there are other possibilites. Heck, some have even speculated Biggs is standing on a thin strand right now b/c of his DUI. Lots can happen to open up more ships over the next year, and most likely at least 1 or 2 more spots will open up. I hope Miles can land Atewe and a decent juco to give us a few more options next year and going forward. If a one-year grad transfer wants to join the party then great. Because assuming he fills his final 2 spots that leaves one if no one leaves to sign in the fall. By waiting until the spring of 2014 to have one leave youre left scrambling to try and find the next Vucetic like we did this last year to fill that spot. I think Miles wants to guarantee 2 spots in the fall which means 1 year transfer/leave the spot open, or someone leaves and we still sign two. Doc did it many times, almost every year. Remember, scholarships are 1 year contracts, so the coach can "predetermine" if someone will be back or not, and then make that player think he is actually leaving of his own accord at the end of the year. If Miles wants to sign 2 in 2014, he will sign 2 no matter how many "open" ships he has at the time.
