I am bored with minimal bball info so thought I would start a new thread. I don't have much but:

a.  Heard Rachel Blackburn played very well in Nashville during early july period;

b.  I think all the freshman are on campus now so whole team should be there except our jc transfer who is finishing up jc summer school I believe.

Anybody have any reports on summer pickup gms or practice? Who is playing well etc?

You're right kansashusker, all members of the team are here but Anya. Good to hear about Rachel B.

Right now, starting yesterday they have been conducting Husker Day Camp for 1st - 6th graders, which runs thru Thursday.

I did see Allie H. on the street and from the way she looks, she's been making good use of the weight room.

I think by the time Allie leaves she will have helped this program a ton. She will most likely never be the star but will be that player who will do what ever is needed.

You may be right...but I still think Havers could end up being even better than we realize right now.

She was a three sport -  All State in Michigan as a Sr. (Softball pitcher, Volleyball, basketball.)  May have been Player of year in Michigan basketball ? (At least that's what I recall.)

And was All State in a couple of sports as a Jr. Never has focused in one sport until last year, here at NU. I remember in an article a couple of years ago, that her coach (don't recall which sport)...said when she goes to college, and focus's (sp) on one sport, there may be no end to her potential. Just extremely athletic, with strong will to excel.

I'm biased about all the NU athletes,...and I'll go out on a limb, and just say that I have a feeling she will start this year, as a replacement for Hooper, and be much improved. (feel free to chop that one all to pieces)

Sure, there will be other "newbies" that I hope will get playing time inside, and at the wing, after they get their feet wet, But Havers has a full years of experience, and knows Yori's system.

Allie was really beginning to step it up near the end of last year.  I expect that she'll be even better this year.  Anya is the only other girl who can play that position that has experience (and she is really a forward), so I expect we'll see a lot of Allie.

RedSteve, I don't think that your thinking is out of line at all. I know we have had this discussion in past about who the starters willbe. But if the front line goes 6'2 Cady, 6'5 Havers, 6'0 Sample for her Defensive ability and then you go 6'0 Theriot & 6'2 Page. I see Page displacing T as the shooting guard.

Rachel Blackburn played well in both Dallas (Frisco, TX) and Nashville.  Coach Yori was in Nashville and was very happy with Rachel's play.  Coach Finch was there too and had nothing but good things to say about Rachel's performance.  Coach Yori told Rachel that she (Coach) wished Rachel could play for the Huskers this year.  Rachel also wishes she could head up to Lincoln now.

Rachel has one more tournament (26 July).  It's "The Best of Maryland' tournament.  It's a High School team tournament.  The Leavenworth Pioneers hope to do better this year.  Last year their were only 2 public schools in the tournament.  I understand Coach Yori will be in MD.

Rachel is very excited about being a Husker.  The other day a basketball practice Rachel asked Tyler Johnson if she (Johnson) wanted all of Rachel's KU gear.

Good to hear on all points! Getting real excited to see all these girls when they all get here. Coach Yori has been putting together some stellar recruiting classes. We can be sure she'll get the most out of them.

Much obliged for the update on Rachel, Colonel!     It'd be nice to have Rachel running up and down the court at the Pinnacle Bank Arena this year......but we can wait.    She's got to have a memorable senior year before she can head up north!

So do the NU fans !....but will just have to wait.

Good luck to Rachel in her summer play !! :)

I  hope people understand that even though lots of our incoming kids the next few years are highly touted/ranked, etc there is a huge leap from h.s to college, and especially to top 20 bcs level college.  A lot of these young kids won't necessarily play that much early in their careers.  It doesn't mean they aren't good, it just means we have older kids ahead that are good. I get worried when I hear how new kids who have never played a college game are going to displace kids who started on a top 20 team last year.  That most likely won't happen.  Some kids that started last year may play slightly less minutes just because of a depth increase, but I highly doubt any of them get bumped from the starting rotation.

Agree totally with what you say kansashusker and hope all incoming recruits think that way. I hope they realize also that you can earn your way into the starting lineup as evidenced in 6 of our past 9 seasons where Yori has started a freshman in each of those 6 years.

I would think Page would play the 3 more than the 2. T gives a totally different defensive look. Connie likes to pressure and T is the best we have from that standpoint. Hard to keep that speed out of the lineup if the rest of her game is decent.

If T is lighting it up from 3 point land this year, I think she will definitely start.  I have a feeling she could be a beast in the scoring department this year, and if she can stay out of foul trouble, she will continue being a beast defensively.  Our opponents will have their hands full with her and Theriot, and still have to worry about Cady.  If Sample can toss in a few each game, especially when they are leaving her wide open, it could be incredible, and I haven't even mentioned any of the newcomers yet!

That is true HB. So right now the only spot open would be the one vacated by Hopper. Who of the in coming freshman has the speed and quickness that T brings to the table ?

The Journal Star interviewed Emily Cady on her view of the new freshmen that have arrived on campus after they played a pick-up game. Pretty good assessment of the new freshmen by Emily. Good read.

"I think Allie has improved the most of anyone on our team,” Cady said. “She’s been working on her post game and her face-up shot off the block. She’s so tall she just shoots over us. And she’s so much better on defense. I’m really proud of her improvement.”

Here's another interesting quote taken from the article in the previous post.

6-3 wing transfer Anya Kalenta, is visiting her family in Belarus after finishing her junior-college courses. She’ll join the Huskers in August.
