HB Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 I commend to your reading Tom Shatel's column in today's OWH (hopefully someone can link) on the Husker Greats Foundation. It mentions that the Foundation is assisting Larry, who is fighting cancer. Details weren't provided other than that he recently had surgery. Larry first said that help should go to someone who needed it more than him, but Dave Humm (who as you probably know has dealt with MS since the 80s) called Larry and encouraged him to accept the help. Thoughts and prayers for Larry, who was a 4 year starter for the Huskers. tcp, HuskerCager, hhcmatt and 1 other 4 Quote

HB Posted June 2, 2014 Author Report Posted June 2, 2014 He was the only good player on Nee's last squad. Hang in there Larry... Steffon Bradford wasn't a good player? Cochran? Belcher (sat out most of the year but was on the squad)? Quote
Handy Johnson Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 Steffon Bradford wasn't a good player? Cochran? Belcher (sat out most of the year but was on the squad)? The game in Stillwater towards the end of the season comes particularly to mind. Florence was a one man team, and yes I love me some Cookie, but like you said he was out most of the year... Quote

That's because Danny ran all the offense through Larry. Lot of iso stuff, getting Larry the ball on the left wing and clearing things out for him to go mano a mano. And that was an OK strategy in Stillwater because Eddie Sutton was strictly a man coach and Larry, when he was really on, could generally get some buckets. But if he wasn't on, or we were facing more zone, Nee's strategy didn't work as well. Not going to say anything bad about Larry, but he wasn't the only good player on that team. hhcmatt 1 Quote
Silverbacked1 Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 Always wonder if his first name is Lawrence? Because if it is then his given name would be Lawrence Florence and that is pretty cool. Quote

throwback Posted March 14, 2016 Report Posted March 14, 2016 Sipple has a bit about Florence today, he apparently has made a recovery - so great news It doesn't really give a time line on the surgery, etc, so it may have happened a while ago - the foundation's fund-raising golf tournament is coming up, so that may be why he wrote about it today A native of Phenix City, Alabama, Florence needed stem-cell surgery in Atlanta. Medical bills became an issue. Which is where Murtaugh came in. As president of the Nebraska Greats Foundation, he convinced Florence to accept help. Murtaugh thanks the heavens that Florence accepted. Because it probably saved Larry's life. "He calls and says, 'Mr. Murt, I want to tell you something. The doctor just called me. I have at least 15, even 25 more years to live. (The treatment) worked, Mr. Murt,''" Murtaugh recalled. more at: http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/sipple/steven-m-sipple-riley-s-belief-in-inclusion-helps-explain/article_d3213037-fbae-59d1-9a34-37025b1d8476.html HB and Bugeaters1 2 Quote

hhcmatt Posted March 14, 2016 Report Posted March 14, 2016 I'm familiar with the Nebraska Greats Foundation and have nothing but good things to say. There is no overhead for this so money raised is going directly to pay the bills for guys like Florence if insurance doesn't cover it. So if you enjoy golfing, I'd recommend checking this out. If you don't, you can just send them $20 or something like that. http://www.nebraskagreatsfoundation.org/ hal9000 1 Quote
Huskerpapa Posted March 14, 2016 Report Posted March 14, 2016 Read today (I believe it was Sip's column) that Larry is doing pretty well and there was a reference that he will be around for another 25 years. Quote

What a shame Larry Florence and Cookie Belcher couldn't be on the court together for his senor season. What could have been. Silverbacked1 1 Quote
