Altman has himself a mess now. Starting PG Dominic Artis has announced he is transferring. Brandon Austin, the SG transfer from Providence, will never play a game as it appears his legal troubles in Rhode Island were bigger than anticipated and now I just saw that Damyean Dotson, a junior wing is also not participating in team activities.

yeah, i've been waiting for Robinson to be shown the door for awhile. I just wonder what took them so long.

It sounds like all three of the players were suspended and Artis decided to transfer. He was also suspended for 9 games this past season for selling Nike shoes that were supposed to be returned to the team. The status of the other two is that they are suspended right now but nobody knows anything beyond that.

So, they waited to dismiss the players who were accused (but ultimately not charged) of sexual assault until after the end of the school year so as not to harm the program's APR standing.  And people are criticizing Oregon because of this decision?

So, let me get this straight:  Oregon should have dismissed these players immediately so that the program could get sanctioned by the NCAA for not maintaining high enough academic standards.

I'm OK with Oregon waiting.

After everything else that's gone down there it's no doubt that this was an easy decision.  Why start doing the right thing now when you've come this far?

Would the right thing have been to leave them on the team or to kick them off sooner?  The implication is that the right thing would be to kick them off right away.

The implication of that, though, would be that the school could get hit with scholarship reductions for doing the "right thing."  If the "right thing" would be to kick the bad guys off the team, why should that affect something called the "Academic Progress Rating" for the school?

The end result the way they did it was that the guys are off the team and they accomplished that in such a way as to not harm their "Academic Progress" as a program.

Again, if the NCAA is going to allow the kicking off of people who should be kicked off a team to reflect negatively on the team's APR, then this is really the NCAA's issue b/c they've created a rule that punishes a school when it does the right thing.

Yes, it's a logistically and correctly calculated move on their part. It also stinks of the sort of overall mindset that has Oregon in trouble in the first place. The purpose of the APR is to try and hold schools accountable for academics.  If their APR wasn't crap in the first place, they could have handled booting those guys immediately.

You want to do the right thing?  Kick these guys out the day you decided you were going to kick them out and apply for a hardship waiver for the APR.  Maybe you don't wait until after the NCAA tournament to suspend them from the team.  Maybe you put the sort of effort into finding out why a kid didn't play in Providence for a year that you put into calculating the most beneficial day to kick kids off the team.

Oregon gives two craps about academics.  Just keep that Nike money flowing and everything will be ok.
