Huskerpapa Posted April 4, 2014 Report Posted April 4, 2014 Okay, I swore I would not start a topic on this dude, but %*^ I am. Congratulations on all the honors you are receiving including the Wooden Player of the Year award. Richly deserved! Now then, I listened to his interview over the noon hour on ESPN. He responded to a question with the following paraphrased response ...I want to thank my coaching staff, my teammates for their unselfishness and the people of Omaha... Hm, very interesting. No mention of the people of NEBRASKA, simply the people of Omaha. In my very humble opinion, that says a lot about the Creighton program versus Nebraska's program. The Huskers are Nebraska's team, including a significant number of people living in Omaha. Creighton's fan base exists of perhaps 30,000 true fans, and some bandwagon jumpers who will support whoever is winning. Sorry for the rant...but that is how I see it through my big red colored glasses. And again, congratulations to Doug McDermott for a great year and career in Creighton and good luck in the NBA. I think you will be there for a number of years barring injury. Norm Peterson and Silverbacked1 2 Quote

SOB Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 Just goes to show even they think of themselves as more of a parochial attraction. True, as does the rest of the Big East. A quick glance at Creighton.edu shows it was founded by 5 Jesuits with money left to them by the wife of the late Edward Creighton. The site also has a title "about Omaha!" on the front menu, they are obviously proud of the connection. As far as McBuckets goes, great career and even greater kid. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 Doug -- terrific player. Fun to watch. As a dad myself, I can imagine how much of a joy it must have been for Greg to watch his kid perform the way he performed over his years at Creighton. Good luck to him. Quote
Concrete Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 Not sure what the surprise is here.. I don't think Creighton has ever tried or claimed to be Nebraska's team? Most of their own fans will tell you that it's "an Omaha thing." Quote
Norm Peterson Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 Not sure what the surprise is here.. I don't think Creighton has ever tried or claimed to be Nebraska's team? Most of their own fans will tell you that it's "an Omaha thing." That is most certainly not how they acted when Dirk Chatelain suggested there was a mystical power of the "N" that a successful Nebraska basketball team would awaken. I don't think that the bozos over on Bleujay Underground are any more representative of Jays fans than the bozos over on Huskersonline are representative of Nebraska fans, but those bozos on the Jays board sure like to act like they have broader statewide appeal than the Huskers. Concrete, I'm glad you're coming on here and at least being honest about it: Creighton = Omaha, and not even really Douglas County, but just Omaha. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 I was thinking about this over the noon hour after the National Championship game last night. Doug McDermott is a fantastic player, but where would he rate if he was on Kentucky's roster? I know he's national player of the year, and the honor is very much deserved considering the numbers he put up this season. Part of those numbers are because he's just a terrific player. But part of those numbers are because he's surrounded by guys like Grant Gibbs and Jahenns Manigat. Doug is good enough to carry his team into the round of 32, but even with Doug, they get obliterated by a Baylor team that loses by 15 to Wisconsin in the next round. And, of course, Wisconsin won another game after that before they lost to the team that lost to the team that won it all. So, it's not like Wichita State losing to the eventual national runner up. Great player though he is, if he had been surrounded by the talent possessed by any of the final 4 teams, would he have led any of those teams in scoring? And if so, what kind of numbers do you think he would have averaged if he'd have had to share the scoring duties with other capable players rather than the guys he played with at Creighton? Quote

Concrete, I'm glad you're coming on here and at least being honest about it: Creighton = Omaha, and not even really Douglas County, but just Omaha. But it also has to be stressed, they are not even an all-Omaha team. There is a major part of Omaha that remains Husker through and through...each and every sport. I would make this guess...and it is only a guess; 50% of Omaha is Husker red. That leaves the other 50% that are either Jayskers or 100% Jay fans. And you know what, my 50% Husker red may be a low guess. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 'Nother question about Doug McDermott. As I was perusing the BJU (re: my getting it out of my system thread) I saw that AttAlum had the following sig line: "But I truly care about Creighton and the fans and what they've done for me the last three years. I want to give them one more year and take care of business in the Big East so we can prove people wrong.'' ---- Doug McDermott So, he stuck around for another year to "take car of business in the Big East" and to "prove people wrong." Mission accomplished? Yes or no? Quote

Their ratings were worse than re-runs of Hee Haw. Dirk being Dirk..... The fact ratings were on a national basis is an easy win compared to ESPN3 or FSN of years prior for them. The important thing for the Jays is recruits could see them and it was a good year to be watched. Would be curious since Dirk is always doing the NU/CU comparrisons and playing the Jaysker thing why he omited the B1G network ratings??? It was a great year for both programs, both teams are trending upward. Dirks piece on the 500 mile radious of teams playing good hoops was well done. Would be nice to see that trend continue as well for all the midwest. wwjamie 1 Quote
