For anyone at the game, can you comment on this statement found on another board:

"200 section, ugh, didn't even feel like a basketball game. Very hard to explain but it was very tough to watch the game and keep interest. I'm hoping the opponent was the reason, will find out Friday night with FGC coming to town."

Agree/disagree/know where he is coming from at all?

it was an exhibition game that got out of hand in a hurry.  That's what it felt like to me from my 200 level perch.

The entire arena was dead.

I think LeeBO nailed why

I'd buy that, and this was the perfect game for it.  Didn't do much of that, personally, but I know some around me were sorta just taking it all in.  They've never used all the bells and whistles during exhibition games and yesterday was no different, though it did seem as though there were a few technical difficulties in the clock operations and such.

For having an awful game, I'm thinking Fuller needs to not redshirt based on that stat line.  We're going to need a rebounder if Pitchford is a 2-guard (not complaining, by the way... if he's a gunner, he'll still be a problem for opposing defenses).  With that form, his shot will find home at some point.

You cant redshirt 2/3 of your incoming freshman class.  Thats unheard of in basketball these days.  If you redshirt any players at all it should be just one and probably Hawkins after missing time with a concussion and a foot injury.

I think I might spend a fair amount of this season wishing Pitchford were a different style of player.  He looks good from the perimeter and will create some match-up issues, but who's going to be able to bang on the inside?

Overall, I thought the defense looked weak, especially given the competition.  UNK's low percentage is more reflective of their poor shooting than us making baskets difficult.

All-in-all, Miles is pretty honest about how this team is going to look.  It's going to be up-and-down, this team is going to give their all, and they'll get better the more time they have to gel.

if we can get a spurs  or even Georgetown type of offensive game, we may not need a true down on the block five man to pound it inside. If we can utilize proper spacing with Pitchford outside, and smith on the high block, we can constantly pound the middle with pick and roll, dribble drive penetration, draw fouls, and kick outs, without that true 5 in the middle. i feel with this team its possible. we may lose offensive rebounds, but if the officiating stays the same throughout the year, we may make up for it in plenty of free throws, or and 1's. We will need Pitch, Smith, Rivers, Shields and Fuller to crash the boards hard, and start the break.

I was talking more on the defensive side of the ball; I love what Pitchford brings offensively.  UNK's 6'8" guys were having some success down in the post against us.

And yeah, I didn't articulate that incredibly well in my OP.

Being there and watching was more telling then a box score.  The comments on here are pretty consistent from those at the game;  so there must be something to it.  He has excellent length and may develop nicely. Should board it well.   He will shoot it better, and soon.   While he wasn't touted for athleticism, he appeared a little more challenged in that area than one would have thought.    Only one night, but appears to have a ways to go to be ready for prime time.  Hard to judge how ready someone is off of recuriitng film and hype; I prefer to watch them play before saying a whole lot. Shavon surprised us on the upside a year ago.  I think all folks are saying is Fuller didn't have that look (Shavon as a freshman) last night.   But of course it's early.

Good thoughts - I thought he looked more comfortable and played more aggressively when he was in with the walk-ons late in the game, so that makes me think he was just tentative/nervous when playing early with the older players.

I don't get your references. The things that Georgetown & the Spurs have in common are that Pop & GTIII are smart enough to tweek the system to the the players they have to work with.

Georgetown gets labeled a Princton school & they do run the high cuts but its not pure Princeton. Closer to a pure 5 man motion where everyone has to be a complete basketball player. Post have to be able to handle & pass & guards need to know how to post.

Pop calls his a motion but it is more like coach K's quick hitters. He has changed the offense as Timmy has gotten older. It used to be all centered around his center posting, now you will see all five players post.

Because of the Georgetown system I think Porter will be able to contribute right away. GTIII's is completely predicated by reads. Everybody is reading the defense and reading each other. That makes it incredibly hard to guard when it is working smoothly but it is also very difficult for players to master & run smoothly because of all the thinking on their feet. Of course the NBA runs set plays but due to the short shot clock & the superior defense, the players have to read and react to be effective NBA players. Porter will come in with that skill.

Back to playing with no post. Neither of your examples do that. If they have a dominant post both coaches will run their offense through the low post player. If they don't have that player, they will adjust accordingly. You will see all 5 spots post up or like the Spurs did at times last year, you might see what the traditionalists would call the 3 posting up & the offense running around them.

You can play without a dominant post but you need a post game from somewhere or like Pop, you can run the post from everywhere & all five players on the floor.

Well they turned the lights out and had little "N" turning red and white on the court. And they let out a bunch of smoke about 25 min. before tip. So I wouldn't say they did nothing. :). But it was as close to nothing as possible. At one point I thought that they might just be doing what we will have Friday And was thinking this ain't gonna cut it.
