This is the place to start tossing out potential names you'd like to see as assistant coaches. My favorite to replace Ben Johnson would be Mike Dunlap, just fired by the Bobcats. Supposedly a great player development guy, and was an assistant at St. Johns before coaching in Charlotte this past season. Remember too when he was hired Miles sent a tweet out about him. Who would you guys like to see?

Well I do not think there is any chance that we hire a former NBA head coach as an assistant...we need to search for a young up and comer...like Travis Steele at Xavier...late 20's age-wise who has helped them develop and recruit the players who have led Xavier to several Sweet 16 appearances in last few seasons.

TM will know who these guys are way more than we will... So, Tim, GATA.

while i normally would agree, Dunlap doesn't really fit the classic "former NBA coach" mold. I'm a Bobcats fan (and a Nebrasketball fan, and a Rams fan.. God help me) and Dunlap was never hired with the idea that he was going to be around long. He was brought in to do what Paul Silas couldn't, which was develop the players and light a fire under their asses. He was an NBA assistant too with the Nuggets I believe before St. Johns, so I wouldn't entirely count it out.

I am not even sure who all the names are that would qualify as assistants at a major college program.  Rather than names, perhaps we should concentrate on needs.  We have two open positions, what all should be on the wish lists???

- The ability to recruit...but where?  Do we want someone in the BigTen footprint?  Someone with ties to New York, California, Texas?

- The ability to develop players...but will this person focus on bigs? Wings?  PG?

- An administrator?

- The ability to get along with the kids.

- Must get along with his head coach and the other assistants.

- Good citizen and role model.

- Must be able to co-exist with the fickle people of Lincoln and Nebraska (see Danny)

- Perhaps some diversity...the elephant in the room is that we currently have all caucasian coaches.

Maybe this is just a partial list...and I would bet that Coach Miles has a long list of possibilities as well as his own list of priorities.

I actually don't think that is the elephant in the room.  I think it is a must to hire someone with diversity.  I believe Miles had a quote, saying basically the same thing.

I think this assistant should be a recruiter.  Craig Smith seems to be a good game planner and Tim seems to bounce X and O's off him.  I think Harriman can do a little of both and has the down under connection.  We need a coach who can just recruit, recruit, and recruit again.

I also think Strickland should get a look at the position Chin vacated (not the full time assistant position).  Obviously Tim thinks he can be an asset to the program (sat with Tai on his recruiting visit).  This would give him a chance to learn the ropes of coaching, and sell the program to recruits while they are on campus (He played for years in the NBA....there aren't a lot of Nebraska players that can say that).  He may not have experience but he would be better than just leaving it vacated.

Miles had a couple of minorities on his staff and they both chose to leave for other jobs within a year.  You'd like to be able to fill the position with the best available candidate without having to worry about skin tones.  From what I've been told, Ben was a good assistant.  Good assistants are in high demand.  I suspect that good assistants with the right skin tones are in even higher demand for exactly the reason bigred4 says above.  But should we settle for a guy just because he's black?  I don't know the answer to that.  And please note I'm not proposing one, just in case someone feels the need to put words in my mouth.

As to Strickland, allow me to make some observations.  Ben is back at his alma mater.  How did he get there?  Well, it for damn sure wasn't his first job as an assistant coach.  He spent two years at Texas Pan-Am, followed by four seasons at Northern Iowa and then did a fine job at Nebraska for a season before being lured away to the school from which he graduated.  He worked his way up to where he is by proving himself at each of his three previous stops.  If Erick desires a position of responsibility with this program, I think it would help his cause to prove himself at an entry-level coaching position before trying to move on to the big time.  Just a thought.

(And note, I didn't say Erick shouldn't be hired.  I said it would "help his cause" if he got some experience somewhere else first.  Those were my words.)
