Need to play some defense

We just don’t play smart team D most of the time.  UW killed us with back doors and drives to their right, especially Ladine. Defense 101 says ‘take away the right hand of a righty.’  Didn’t happen.

Add in low energy D in the 2nd half and we’re blown out at home on senior day.  We need a major infusion of quickness for next year, as well as a serviceable replacement for Markowski.

Had dinner after the game so am late commenting.  I was worried about #14 the 6’4” Washington post who could run the floor and Ladine, #24 was as good as a player I’ve seen play in Lincoln.  I loved their offense, players were in constant motion and the UCLA cuts off the high post usually produced easy shots for the Huskies.  We were beaten physically and mentally before the 4th quarter began.  Our body language and facial expressions revealed a defeated squad.  Prince would have helped but not today.

Washington was allowed to play very physical often pushing Markowski with two hands with no foul called.  We did not respond to their physicality.  It’s Women’s BB so you never know what the officiating will be.  Clearly the Huskies were the far superior team in every phase.  I thought we could dominate inside which worked in the first half but was adjusted to by Washington.

Outplayed, out coached and the effort was with the Huskies.  I do not want to see them in the B1G Tournament as they are a nightmare matchup.  It’s amazing that their record is that mediocre.

I am discouraged about our level of play.  We certainly aren’t peaking.

Prince walked in without any brace and without a limp. I sit where the team enters the court.

I was replying to a post about Williams playing softball.

I graduated from both Univ. of Nebr. and Univ. of Wash.  I was at the game and took absolutely no pleasure watching Washington win.  This is the first time I have watched  us get so mismatched against a team with a 50/50 record at our place.  The coaches did not have us ready in any shape or form.  We let a good opportunity to help our seeding escape.  It will be very interesting to see if Amy can get anything out of the portal for next year without losing anyone.

Getting Natalie Potts back to full health would be a big addition not unlike a impact portal player. That's how I look at "impact" in the portal, we all know she is very important to Nebraska's 2025-26 team success, along with Britt Prince as well. Hopefully NU can add quicker, bigger players. It's hard to remain solid if slower and undersized is the status quo, especially against many of these B1G teams.

I'm concerned about our ability to recruit/attract the better players. It doesn't have to be Amy on the road. A lot of staffs have recruiting aces in assistant positions.

There was an excellent story about Markowski and her mom in yesterday's LJS. I was surprised to read, it was Kendal Coley's dad who contacted the Nebraska staff about recruiting Alexis.  Mr. Coley had just watched his daughter play against her in a Des Moines AAU contest. Alexis lit them up for about 30 points.  AM was in the Husker's back yard, and it took a recruits dad to get them moving. I'm sure there is more to the story, but lack of shared information on recruiting, high school or portal, has always left me wondering.   Could our approach to recruiting use an overhaul?

This conference is a monster. We're sitting in 10th place. Are we headed up or down?

AM was going to go to South Dakota State before CV19 hit and made her rethink her school.

Also true. Did you read the LJS article?  What you state was mentioned, as was other schools interested due to her AAU success.  The recruitment was mentioned, but the relationship with "mom" was the heart of the article.

I did not read the article. I just remember she uncommitted from them and chose NE. I think she had a few schools offer but no major D1 if I remember correctly. Correct me if I am wrong.

Here is part of the article that talked recruitment.....       I get the LJS, but you might be able to see the article by Googling "LJS article on Markowski".  Touching article.

The Markowskis talked about Nebraska and Creighton. They discussed Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State. Several schools jumped into the mix for Alexis, but once Nebraska connected with the Markowskis, it became the priority.

“It’s kind of crazy that I am here,” Alexis said. “I was committed for almost two years and then playing Kendall Coley — which never would have happened if COVID never happened. It all worked out perfectly for me to be here.”
