That article is not accurate or outdated. I’m personal friends with two division I refs. One got $2,800 for doing a Creighton game earlier this year in Omaha. And he is a very, very young ref. Seasoned refs make plenty more. Higgins was banking 4-5k per game, doing multiple games up and down the west coast during CB season.  Here are a few excerpts I found. Some have conflicting information regarding reimbursement, but all seem to point that well traveled refs in Division I could make 150k+

Officiating is a tough, tough job...I would find it difficult to be accurate and fair.

I had 2 complaints from last night. 

 

#1 Keisei's defender was able to get a souvenir of Keisi's jersey, with how much he grabbed it.  Everytime Keisei would go around a screen, #4 would grab his jersey.  They finally called it with about 3 minutes left in the game.  The shock on #4's face was priceless.  I understand they hadn't called it all game, why pick that time to call it?  Much like the Creighton game when they decide to call an illegal screen after the game is all but over.

 

#2 Payne was camped in the lane multiple times.  Again, no call.

Just be consistent with the calls. And last night was just another of "it's only a foul on one end of the floor"
