  1. 1. Lay up on 15 or go for it?

    • I'm taking the risk and going for the eagle.

Yeah, it wasn't a perfect analogy.  It kind of came together as I was typing it and so there were some holes in it, like the money thing, that I had to fill in later.

But, I was reading these posts that were talking about firing the coach 2 years ago and I was trying to come up with an analogy that would put some perspective on how rare it is that Husker hoops has assembled a roster like what we had going into this season, that so many people say they would have been willing to blow up 2 years ago.

This doesn't happen every day that we have 4- and 5-star talent at every spot in the starting lineup.

In fact, it's never happened before, for as long as Rivals has existed.

So, how do you convey that, this time (2017), you had to let it ride and see where it goes?

All good stuff, Norm, but a couple of critiques with the analogy.  I don't put it all on Copeland's knee.   We were playing like absolute dog crap for 3 weeks prior to his injury.   Whatever buttons coaches are supposed to push for several mill a year weren't getting pushed.

And I have trouble equating what the AD did 2 years ago with going for it on 15.    Because he hedged.     Sure, he didn't fire the coach.   But he didn't exactly support him either.  In fact, "going for it" in terms of going all in with the coach and supporting him is not close to what happened with the lack of an extension and weird lack of a public statement other than a succinct tweet.   And I do think that contributed to the lack of depth in '18-19.  With a coach barely alive but twisting  in the wind, all the sudden we're only signing guys whose best offer was NU (Tom Allen excepted).   Thor, Nana, KD, are you kidding me?).      When I think of a "go for it" mentality, I think of Arnold Palmer, not SE.

We were not playing like we did in the non-conference, but I wouldn't say we were playing like dog crap.  We beat PSU and Indiana (by 15 on the road), we lost to MSU by 6, and blew a big lead against Rutgers.  We were either down by a couple points or tied when Copeland went down against OSU.

Thor had an offer from Utah.  As for offers, Roby's best offer was UNI.  He is a possible 1st round pick in the NBA draft next year.  Harris had an offer from Auburn.  KD had an offer from K-State.  Brady had an offer from Creighton.  I would say Thor, Harris, KD, and Brady had better offers than Nebraska.

Heiman had a gray shirt offer from Creighton.   And we were struggling mightily against a mediocre Ohio State team at home when Cope went down.    Blown out by Iowa when it was struggling.  Major problems were easily apparent to the eye watching the games.

I believe that's incorrect.  I believe we were knotted up at 29 when Cope was hurt.

May have been knotted up but we were playing like shit.   Down 29-24 at half.  Having loads of trouble scoring the ball.

Copeland helped our shooting from 3.  In conference games before he got hurt, our starters shot 63 - 180 (.350) from 3.  After Copeland got hurt, starters are shooting 30 - 112 (.268).  If we can get Palmer and Watson back to shooting like they did before Copeland's injury, along with Roby against NW, and Allen against Purdue we are back to a tough team to beat.

Miles noted in his interview today with HuskerOnline that we have had to move to being a team who relies more on controlling possessions.  We just need to be efficient in how we achieve 60-70 points and our D is going to have to be there every game.

in the scenario, is Laying up...firing the coach or is laying up...keeping the coach.

It is is hard for to figure out which is going for it...and which is playing it safe.

laying up could be not firing a coach and keeping the same roster, being conservative and let the thing play out.....

Going for it, could be firing a coach, blowing  up the roster and finding a replacement that sticks in on the green in year one or two...

The way I see it, laying up is keeping the coach.

But I don't think that's how Norm pictures it.

I can see arguments both ways...

I have always had the belief that you need to hire a coach at Nebraska and close your eyes for about 7 years on results (I'd do the same thing if I was the AD at Kansas for their football team)...and  really start judgin them from year 8, 9 and 10....

Now, i have probably said contradictory things in the past(haven't we all)...but I think you have to realize that at Nebraska basketball or Kansas football, that you have to allow a coach to figure it out..and it just takes time and you will make mistakes along the way.
