The elder Coupet did sign, but never played for Nebraska. Here's a little background from OWH archives. Nee's Goal: Recruit Big Men Omaha World-Herald (NE) - Friday, September 11, 1992 Author: Lee Barfknecht, World - Herald Bureau Danny Nee's Nebraska basketball recruiters hit the road today with big men on their minds. "We're totally committed to 4s and 5s," Nee said Thursday, referring to power forwards and centers. "We want guys 6 - 8 or bigger." The reason is that of the 11 Huskers on the roster, the tallest four are juniors or seniors. They are 6 - foot - 10 senior center Derrick Chandler, 6 - 8 junior forward Amos Gregory, 6 - 8 junior forward Tom Best and 6 - 7 junior forward Bruce Chubick. Height, Nee said, is the reason Nebraska decided not to offer a scholarship to Osita Nwachukwu from Nigeria. Nwachukwu visited Lincoln in early August. The Huskers became aware of the 18 - year - old African club player through coaching contacts at Notre Dame and Wisconsin. Nee said early reports on the Nigerian indicated he was 6 - 11. "After I got him on the phone, he told me he was 6 - 8," Nee said. "When he got here, he was 6 - 6 or 6 - 7. "He's a real nice kid. But he didn't fit our plans." Nwachukwu also was considering LaSalle, St. Joseph's and Jacksonville, but might enroll in an American prep school. One player Nebraska did sign - 6 - 9 center Ben Coupet from Chicago - hasn't enrolled anywhere. "He's kind of in never - never land," Nee said. "He didn't enroll at the junior college he was supposed to, either. "He still wants to come here, but it's impossible right now." Coupet , who must sit a year for not meeting Proposition 48, was to have enrolled at Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College. At Chicago Simeon, Coupet made the Chicago Sun - Times 20 - man all - area team, which encompasses 250 schools.

If Petteway stays another year...
HuskerCager replied to Fullbacksympathy's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Agreed, and that factors in tougher B1G schedule and not being able to sneak up on anyone this year. Non-conference alone will probably be 2 wins better. Certainly possible. There are some real cupcakes on the schedule, but also 4 or 5 games that are lose-able. That R.I. game is kind of a trap game, isn't it? But then I thought the Fresno St FB game may have been a trap game. -
Obviously TM was inspired by this man when recruiting Morrow. Brilliant! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKUvKE3bQlY

Now this is music to my ears: “Nebraska offered more than Iowa. It was nothing personal against Iowa. I was always told I would know what place I wanted to be. It felt comfortable at Nebraska. It felt like home.’’
-
Wow - not surprised, but a little relieved. Two years of excellent recruiting work done by this staff on this young man comes to a happy close!

Can't help but notice that Miles tweeted that recruits are in town. Who else besides Morrow? Roby is supposed to be here next weekend. Maybe he's referring to football recruits.

97% Renewal Rate: http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/mens-basketball/nu-reports-percent-renewal-rate-for-hoops-tickets/article_72f35ea9-146f-564c-843b-5bb5257ac165.html

This has been a very interesting couple of weeks when it comes to Morrow's recruitment. On one hand, all signs pointed to his recruiting heating up. He improved his stock with his summer play, right? And some articles have suggested he was working on setting up visits with additional schools. Yet, we are almost in mid September and he still has only two visits. I can't believe it isn't that other high majors aren't interested. It feels like our staff is just doing a superb job of reeling him in. At least I hope so. I don't think I can stomach losing another commitment to the Hawkeyes. He wouldn't, would he?

Brian Conklin getting screwed in the record books

Said Brian's alter ego Seriously, "Conk" has my admiration for the way he finished strong his Sr. year after taking a lot of criticism at times. -
Will Fran McCaffery be in Iowa through 2021
HuskerCager replied to hhcmatt's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Maybe Connor will see the light of day and become a Husker. Never mind. I see he committed. Helps when one actually reads the article, doesn't it? -
Wow, we are into September and that home opener isn't officially decided, as far as I know. Rumor was that N. Kentucky was the potential opponent, right? Wonder what happens if that falls through.

The coaching staff sealed the deal! One more to go - great job, staff! I would think it would be hard for the Morrow not to stand up and take notice that there are now two top quality players who think this program is on the rise in the last month alone.

Nice question, Fever. Well, I think we need rebounding and defense underneath more than anything else, right? And eliminating the draftees makes this a little harder. Yet, we're talking Nebraska, right? So how much of a handicap can that be ? So Alecs Maric seems like a decent answer per above. But I have to think back to an Al McGuire quote when he was watching a UCLA center (can't remember the name) and noting that the guy was a "Clydesdale among his Thouroughbred teammates". Doesn't seem like Maric would be great at getting up and down the court in relation to the players we have now. Claude Renfro was only 6-6, but he was a great defender and rebounder for Iba in the early 80s. Maybe I can come up with a couple more. EDIT - Chubick would be number 1 choice - then Maric and Renfro would be my #2 and 3.

Trollers who post here would quickly fade away if they weren't so effective at getting the regulars to argue with them.

I'd like to think its a promotion for NU as well as a huge thrill for the players. Thats THEIR country they are playing for. Its an honor to represent your fellow man. In Tai's experience getting to play against the best players in the world when he plays the USA will be an incredible opportunity to test himself to the highest degree and should hopefully push him to get even better. I know most athletes of this caliber, when they go head to head, want to be better than the other person and if they are not will take the necessary means to do so. I'm sure Terran probably felt the same way at Adidas Nations playing against the NBA players that got the better of him. Iron sharpens iron and these opportunities are huge pluses for all parties. Very good points, Kamdy.

Am I just being selfish? I can't wait to see Tai get these games over with and get back to Lincoln. I understand why a coaching staff lets them go overseas (recruiting-wise, it would backfire if you had a reputation for not letting players take advantage of the opportunity). Other than that, I don't think there is much up-side for Nebraska. Tai could get injured (like Leslee), or burned out from playing. And will playing in the World cup make Tai a better college player? I know, I'm being selfish.

I agree, it doesn't help, but this won't be like 3 or 4 years ago where you see 90% of the bench seats sitting empty.

5 of 7 games at home to start the conference season. I actually like getting road games out of the way, but whatever. And we finish the season at home on Sunday against our traditional archrival - the Maryland Terripans.?
-
I think he is now the back-up plan to Morrow. Let's say that we manage to sign Morrow (F) and Watson (G). I would think we would want to have the last scholarship go to a forward or center. And in that case, wouldn't Puryear be an option?

2018 SG Aguek Arop -> San Diego St
HuskerCager replied to uneblinstu's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Wow - what a day. First of all, congrats to Arop and the coaching staff. Now, an observation: while I am ecstatic about the AW III announcement, I have to admit I am a little more guarded about this one. And I wish both the player and the program all the best in the world. But I have to think this is going to be a long 3 years for player and program alike. Both parties clearly are taking a risk on each other. NU (heaven forbid) could lose their current coaching staff or have some kind of other calamity that would make NU a less attractive option for Aguek. And NU is obviously betting Aguek will develop into a Big Ten player. I understand the pressure the coaching staff is in and why they had to offer when they did. Just acknowledging the risks. The flip side is that it will make watching HS basketball in the Omaha metro a lot more interesting to me the next 3 years. -
Sure there has.... er, well, sort of..... http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=209258510

Wow. I am speechless! Another negative recruiting barrier for the program comes tumbling down. Welcome to Big Red country, Andrew White III! And thank you!

Andrew White III - Kansas Transfer

Thank goodness the O'Bannon rule will soon be here. I don't know how they would ever cover that late registration fee.
