#3 would be my prediction. Not many coaches hang around more than 10 years anymore.

It never made sense to me that they would do an overseas trip with an experienced team. This sounds like a better plan. I noticed Jake Hammond played in an OK-TX all star game last week, but I never could find a box score for the game. He got passing mention in the articles I found, so it doesn't sound like he must have had a sparkling stat line.

Hey Jimmy, you forgot the largest ball of twine. http://www.kansastravel.org/balloftwine.htm

For any school hoping to sign a top 100 player for 2015, time is of the essence. 32% of the ESPN top 100 has already made a verbal commitment.

I'll agree, Kamdy. At least partly anyway. Location has been a detriment to our program the last 15 years. But it's more than that. The women's program signed top 100 players from California and Washington last year, indicating they have a national reputation. Conversely, the men's program has struck out on players from Chadron, Omaha, S.Sioux City, etc. I know, that's looking backwards. We have an image problem with players, somehow, someway. That's the only way I can explain players choosing Iowa or Baylor over Nebraska. I think HS players are still watching and waiting to see if the success we had last year is sustainable. Probably the best thing we can do for recruiting is to get to the Sweet 16 next year. We need a win, anyway.

Personally, I don't think we've gone anywhere until we actually start signing a few of these guys. While it's been fun to have the bigger names on the radar, you are spot on, being the runner up in recruiting battles means nothing. Just for kicks, I thought I would test the theory that we have elevated our recruiting by doing a year-by-year comparison on Rivals of our offers to 4* or better players who have medium or better interest in us. The number of players by year - 2002-2015: Collier 2002-2006: 0, 0, 0, 1, 0 Sadler 2007-2012: 0, 0, 1, 0, 3, 8 Miles 2013-2015: 3, 12, 8 (so far) Looking at the stats above, anyone would be tempted to conclude that we started recruiting a lot better starting the last couple of years. Then I decided to do the same year by year comparison for another Big Ten school that I felt was not on the upswing. Here are Penn St's year-by-year offers: 2002-2015: 0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 0, 2, 1, 6, 6, 6 What does it all mean? I don't know. Is Penn St really recruiting that much better now? Or is Rivals doing a much more comprehensive job of tracking offers now than they did 10 years ago? Really, a better barometer of interests would be visits, but I didn't have that available to me. I love Miles and our current staff. I think this is a top notch staff that excels at recruiting. But I am wary of the possibility that - even with their acumen at recruiting - the basketball landscape today is working against Nebraska more than it has in the last 50 years (AAU, metropolitan emphasis, etc). It is striking the success the women have had lately signing top 100 players. They sign more players in that category in 1 year than the men do in a decade. Why is that? Is Yori and her staff that much more effective at selling their program? No way. I don't mean to disrespect what Yori has accomplished in any way. I just think there are things going on in men's basketball that are still making this job a lot tougher than elevating the women's program.

Huge? Hmmm.... Well, there was a Jim Huge who was a former NU football and basketball player. Maybe I'm taking your choice of words too literally. http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=3744408 http://www.thehugefoundation.org/pdf/Jim_Huge_Bio.pdf

For anyone who is starved for some good recruiting news (like me) CWG, that was just plain dirty.
-
To borrow a phrase someone used about Miles in another thread, I haven't seen any posts that I would describe as "pretty critical" of Hunter, maybe just concerned.

Be sure and ask RP to show you the Gopher practice facility, Ed.

Well, what are you waiting for Andrew. Just sign up! Or at least before we hit page 20 on your own thread.

I just read that article and think "Myles Holley" for some reason.

Norm, I think I just have a slightly different view of our local press than you and CWG - two of my favorite long-time posters on this forum. That's OK - all is well. -

I don't know what, if anything was sensationalized in the article. They just reported the facts and got a quote from TM in the process. When you or I go out to lunch with a couple of strangers, it doesn't make the papers. It does with TM. Same thing happens with a traffic ticket. Look, it's unfair to expect our local papers to report just the good stories. It should never be that way. Expecting anything else is asking our local media to compromise it's journalistic integrity. Again, I think TM would be the first to tell you that all of this is fair game. He is taking an intentional walk to get his name in the paper every chance he gets. And along with that, the basketball program. Good for him! And he knows that along with that, little things like traffic violations are going to make the paper as well. That's fair. As Lee Barfknecht has said, TM "gets it" when it comes to media coverage. -
What do the Cyclones have for a roster now. Like 25 scholarship players? Feels like it.

Well, they are also giving Miles a lot of positive coverage about him taking people out to lunch on a whim, etc. Are those lame articles? People in highly public venues should expect a lot of coverage about themselves. The good and the not so good. I bet TM has no qualms about the local media covering this accident whatsoever. -
As I would tell my son, he should wear a belt.

Glad to hear everyone involved apparently is OK.

2014 SG Jordan Cornish -> UNLV-> Tulane
HuskerCager replied to uneblinstu's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Tim Miles & Co. have, over each of the past two seasons, left one scholarship open and used it for a walk-on, and it appears that such actions each year were deliberate. Accordingly, we might need to learn from time-to-time to live with such an approach in the future as well, whether we like it or agree with it or not. Intentional seems to be a relative term here. I have a hard time believing that Tim sits down with his staff each fall and says: "OK guys, it's September 2013. We are not going to sign up a roster of 13 scholarship players for next year. I want to give away a scholarship next summer to a deserving walk-on." I think the dialogue goes like this: "OK guys, it's May 2014, a lot of good schools are going after a few leftover recruits. We have only so much time to focus on 2014 anymore. We are going to use our time wisely and focus on 2015. At least we can give the leftover scholarship to a deserving walk-on." -
It would expect him to be our best pickup this year. I like everything I hear about him.

Andrew Flemming - SG - 2015
HuskerCager replied to Nebrasketballer's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Rivals doesn't have him ranked at all and 247 has him at 197 but I get what you're saying. Didn't bother to check - I assumed. Thanks Kamdy. When you look at the names of the schools that were in on him, you think he's a top 150 recruit. -

This is the kind of thing that needs to happen here. A top 150 recruit from this class that walks into Lincoln, is blown away, and commits on the spot. If it's happening in Iowa City, why can't it happen in Lincoln? It's got to happen sometime. I think.
