Not being snarky, but why do you say that? Pretty much was ajb said. Smith's primary value was as the #2 man on the bench during games - and as a coach in practice. That is what we needed to replace and Molinari fits that to an extent I would not have thought possible. Smith might have been more valuable because he has been with Miles for so long - but Molinari would bring a wealth of experience that our staff was lacking. People tend to think the only job of assistant coaches is to recruit. That is not true. That is what Danny Nee tried at the end and it got him fired. In the earlier years he had some high quality coaching assistants. When they left he went out and got nothing but pure recruiters and it backfired with a vengeance. No question we got some valuable transfers in Pettaway and Pitchford - but Miles has turned this program around primarily by coaching not by recruiting.
-
I think Molinari would definitely be a "bang" hire as an assistant.

I would wonder which came first NeeBrasketball or Nebrasketball I think it started wtih them using Neebrasketball - and then it got shortened when Danny was not here anymore. I would credit Nick Joos who was the director of basketball operation when Danny was here. Nick use the Neebraska or Neebrasketball for promotional things back then. The annual golf fundraiser was the Neebraska Classic.

I can't +1 this enough. This is exactly why Husker Power is so great! Multiple +1's from me too.

My parents are both in their 80's and they pretty much stood up the whole time as well. Saw them sitting a couple times during timeouts and at halftime but otherwise they were up. Surprised me because I did not think they could do it.

The posts I have seen just talk about this being our biggest HOME game ever. I have not seen anyone call it the biggest game ever overall.

I'm not in a wheelchair so I can't speak for those who are, but my general impression of those who are is that they wouldn't be offended. They realize you're not talking about them. Most people don't have as thin of skin as the PC crowd expects them to have. And those who are mobility-impaired realize that the sign would lose a good deal of its impact if it had to read "Nobody who is physically able to stand Sits Today!!!" This is good Norm. I really like all of this "no sit Sunday" stuff. But there are reasonableness things that I hope people understand. My 84 year old mother is going to be at the game and she can't stand up for the whole game. She sits in row one - so no worries that anyone will be standing in front of her (except courtside seats which I will address). I assume no one is going to criticize 80 year old people for sitting down and watching as long as they are not telling others to sit down. I will say that if anyone has courtside seats they need to ignore this "mandate". One of the earlier games there were a couple people standing in those seats and because of the proximity of the seats to the court they really block the view for everyone in the first few rows - even if those people are standing up. So elderly, disabled and courtside ticket holders all need to be "exempted" from the "no sit" rule. -
So your observation begs the question, HuskerBB. What kind of player would CS have been for us had he stuck around and played for Miles? Well I really did not intend to go that direction. Was just trying mentioning it because he was a former player - not trying to make any sort of point about Doc vs. Miles. Was going to answer - but now that I think about it I don't really want to start that discussion today. Understand that if CS had stayed here and not transferred his eligibility would be up so it is not like he could have been part of this team anyway.

Talk to the AD. He is usually leading the rush of fans trying to get out of the arena early. I hardly believe the AD is leaving the PBA. If he's like Boehm, he's outside their locker room or in the tunnel offering congrats as the team and coaches enter. You may be right - but it sure doesn't appear that way. When you see Boehm or other athletic department people at the games it is pretty obvious they are working and moving around the arena for that purpose. SE just is in a seat until the rest of the crowd starts to leave and he goes out at basically that time. He does go out the north side (NW corner) where no one else can go - not the locker room / courtside booster exit - but the same end at least so may be he is going to the locker room in an indirect way. But, that is also the exit direclty toward the administration parking spots so it at least makes it look like he is leaving. I don't want to make a great big deal out of it and as I said you may be right about what he is doing. But if you are right - he exits in a strange way. Why doesn't he go over to the exit the team will go out and stand there and wait and watch the end of the game. That what you sometimes see Boehm or Paul Meyers doing. The timing of when he leaves is also odd - not the same each game - just when it first appears the outcome is decided. Again - I don't know for sure what he is doing. But if I was in his position I would be aware enough about the appearance of things to not make it look like I was just heading home before the game was over - whether or not that was in fact what I was doing.

Was watching Sportscenter and Christian Standhardinger got a mention. Not for his play directly but because some idiot student from Cal-Santa Barbara came on to the court to confront the Hawaii coach who was arguing with the ref - and Standhardinger helped get the kid away from the coach. Anyway - made me looked it up and he is having a nice year for Hawaii - averaging over 17 ppg and Hawaii is 19-10 (but lost to UCSB) which I am guessing has them not quite on the bubble but probably in the NIT.

Just turned it over in the 2nd half and have not been watching closely but have not seen Gesell - is he not playing? If not why not?

I dont think I can fully comprehend....
HuskerBB replied to BigP50's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Yes - I have a little bit of a fear that the players will get too caught up in all the hype surrounding this game. They just need to focus and treat it like the next game on the schedule. An important game to be sure - but just focus on it like they have been to this point. -
The 65-66 team finished 20-5 and rated #11 in the country. In those days there actually were no at-large bids - only conference champions made it into the NCAA tourney. That did not change until the early 70's when NC State and Maryland were rated #1 and #2 but only one of them could get in - so you had the #2 team in the country not even get into the tournament. Field did not expand to 64 until about 1985. In between there we had a few teams that would have gotten in for sure with a 64 team fied - including the 82-83 team that went to the NIT Final Four. That year we were the last Big 8 team playing as the ones who made the NCAA were eliminated before the NIT Final Four.

I would start Rey - but not Peltz. Maybe tough to make a distinction but Rey is someone who would get real minutes in any event. Also scholarship player vs. walkon. I don't think we have ever started walkon's just because they were seniors - certainly not ones that were not in the regular rotation.

Typically they will be on a charter and the flight will come into the General Aviation area - not the commercial airport terminal. Same airport but you need to go to the east side of the runways - take the first exit off of the airport entrance.

Most important home game in Nebraska history ...
HuskerBB replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I agree it is probably the most important home game ever. The only atmosphere that I think would compare would be when Dave Hoppen was a freshman and we made a run to the NIT Final Four. That was back when the NCAA field was smaller and the NIT really meant something. Devaney was crazy for those games - and PBA will be crazy on Sunday! -
Party in the vault on Sunday night
HuskerBB replied to HolyBobpilgrimage's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I hope they beat Purdue by 40 tonight That's impossible. Wisconsin doesn't know how to score more than 40 points. Well Wisconsin does average over 73 points per game. I don't think the stereotype of them as being a slow-down pure defensive team is really accurate this year. -

Great job! I really was missing the one that the ISU guy did for the Big 12. Thanks for putting this together. Fix the home/road thing as noted above and just keep updating. -
Difference between this team and Doc's teams
HuskerBB replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Marcus Perry. Bo Spencer. Honorable mention to Steve Harley and Sek Henry. Both coaches had guys who could score. I'd say it's more about Doc trying to be perfect and Miles trying to minimize mistakes. Brandon Richardson still probably looks over his shoulder if he misses a shot on his driveway. No. Sorry. Perry was a great shooter if he caught the ball in rhythm beyond the arc. He could nail threes at a pretty high rate. But he did NOT create his own offense. Spencer was close, but as someone else pointed out, he wasn't able to finish at the rim like Petteway and Petteway's numbers are all-around better than Spencer's. Petteway is hitting 37% from three and 45% overall. Spencer was 34% from three and 41% overall. Harley and Henry were nowhere near as good of shooters as Petteway. Nowhere near. Terran is one of those rare players who can score from anywhere. Last night, he shot (and made) a 3 off the dribble, he took it off the dribble and got to the rim, and he hit a mid-range fade-away jumper off the dribble. Sek and Steve simply could not do what Petteway does. Period. The point wasn't to compare their actual numbers. My point would be that if Spencer played for Miles rather than Doc his numbers would have been better - and conversely if Petteway played for Doc rather than Miles his numbers would be considerably worse. I think in terms of raw talent Spencer was every bit as talented as Petteway (offensively anyway and understanding Petteway is obviously taller). That said perhaps the overriding original point was that Doc generally had less talent to work with and that is true. But personally I see alot of differences between MIles and Doc that go beyond recruiting as well. -
Difference between this team and Doc's teams
HuskerBB replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Very true. Doc would have certainly at least reigned Petteway in from some of the things he has done this year - which would have made him much more hesitant on the floor. Others mentioned Daganduro as a player Doc had that was very talented. That is more similar in position - but in the context of the question I would use Bo Spencer as an example of a player that Doc had that was very talented and while smaller played similarly in some respect to Petteway. -
Deverell Biggs dismissed from the team
HuskerBB replied to MidwestDrummer's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Seems to me that like with most things the truth is very likely in the middle of the extremes that people argue. I suspect that what happened is Miles consulted with Eichorst in the process of making a decision. Eichorst statements in that conversation would certainly have had an impact on any decision Miles made. If Eichorst had encouraged Miles to give the kid another chance Mile would more likely have been willing to do so. If on the other hand Eichorst said he felt Miles should cut him loose (which again is what I suspect happened) then that probably played a big role in Mile's ultimate decision. Certainly Miles could have defied his boss in this kind of scenario but that is not likely in reality unless Miles really wanted to take a contrary approach. "Maybe" Eichorst's input is what led to Miles ultimately making the decision he did and "maybe" without that input that decision would have been different. No on on this board knows for sure - and frankly Miles probably doesn't even know for sure because that would just be a hypothetical of facts that did not happen. Bottom line it was Miles' decision to make - but one would expect that Eichorst might have a role in influencing that decision - and probably a major role depending upon how strongly he felt. Obviously an AD could have said - "coach it is entirely up to you and I will back up whatever you decide". Then the coach can make the decision on their own. Doesn't sound like that happened here - but that doesn't mean what happened is wrong. These are things that AD's can legitimately provide input and advice on in helping the coach make a decision and it is not wrong if they do so. Again - no one on this board has all the facts - and even the people involved probably viewed it differently. It is quite possible that Miles gave Biggs the impression that his hands were somewhat tied by his boss and that he "might" have decided differently otherwise. That could be true and it still could be Miles' decision in the end - but a decision he made knowing how his boss felt about the issue. Neither one has to be "lying" for their statements to be true. People will often see or hear the exact same thing and interpret them very differently. Primarily people interpret events in a manner that is most consistent with their preconceived notions. I am sure Biggs "wanted" to believe that his coach wanted to keep him on the team but that SE said no. So he would be very inclined to interpret Miles' statements that way - even if that would not be the interpretation of Miles or even a neutral observer. The truth to anyone is based on their interpretation of the event - and so different things are true to different people. The world is a million shades of grey - not black and white. That said it would be ludicrous for Miles to ever say publicly that he was not the one making the decision in this situation. He would appear castrated as a coach. So for example (not saying this happened - in fact I am pretty certain it would not have come down this way ) if SE told Miles that he had to kick Biggs off the team or Miles would be fired then Miles is still not lying in saying he made the decision. Might not be a decision he "wanted" to make but even if it were a decision forced upon him it is still his decision and he is not "lying" by saying that is what he decided. Again I don't think it came down in any form close to that - just saying that if you did think it came down that way it does not necessarily equate with calling Miles a liar. Even if he did think the decision was forced upon him Miles is going to say it was his decision to make and that he was the one he made it. -
Cold water, we are +5 dogs to Penn State
HuskerBB replied to PimpMario's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
It is a winnable game - but we are certainly not yet to the point where we can go on the road against any conference team and "expect" to win. I think the spread is probably about what it should be. We have a good chance to win - but if you are making neutral predictions probably more likely we would lose. In basketball you have to have more than "a touch" more talented in order to be more likely than not to win if you are playing on the road. -
[FALSE] - PBA putting an end to storming the court
HuskerBB replied to Huskerbb73's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Exactly. I suspect the worry from somebody higher up is more that somebody might get injured and sue the U or PBA. Same reason our cheerleaders can't do the lifts and other stunts every other cheerleading squad still does.
