Thanks hugh !! What Miles told Katz about our game with FGCU ......"I told Joe Dooley you're getting an $85,000 check to go 0-1"
-
Lang, I am further away than I was at Devaney and I don't deserve to be any closer than the amount I'm willing to spend allows me to be. It's a beautiful arena, one that should help us lure recruits we might not have been able to quite close on in the past. If that helps the program while putting me somewhat further away from the action, I've decided not to complain about it but just rejoice in the incredible facilty we now have the pleasure to call home. I will be sitting with some absolutely fabulous fans. I know who they are even though they might not realize I'm the guy who posts as Norm Peterson. So, in that respect, I feel pretty lucky. I'll PM you with the exact details and hope and expect to see you at games this season, Lang. Thankfully, there's so much more to be happy about than to complain about. And, at my age, being further away from the court is a small price to pay for being closer to the toilets. Thanks Norm and I appreciate your attitude about it all too. Like you said hopefully NU hoops is going places. If we'd somehow get a solid commit from a really big guy in the near future....we'd be feeling about as good about things as we have in a looonnng time.
-
Norm, without giving too much detail, where did you end up and did that not go as expected? My memory from the past year is that you had moved to the lower bowl in the arena. Lately you seem to be saying that your seats are in the nose bleeds. Did you apply for the lower bowl ? You can PM me if you want, just curious what happened. If anybody should be in the lower bowl, with nice seats....you'd be right there in my book. You being one of the most passionate dudes on this board, it kinda stinks if you are way up where you don't want to be.
-
Thanks guys !!

Whatever happened to that really big dude Doc brought in for a visit one spring. IIRC, the guy didn't want to show his abilities to Doc while here (lazy or slightly sick) or Doc had even left town when he came to visit ? I just wonder if he ended up somewhere.
-
I just watched a few short clips. Well, you can throw out the Andre A comparison/worries, he moves around really well for his size. And he's a "lefty" too !
-
Well that makes 3 of us then....I'm in row 2 of 214 I got to see the arena tonight. I really like my seats, no complaints. Great to finally see the place. Little bit of a bummer that the floor seats are so far away behind the baskets. The last few years I have sat behind the East basket at Devaney towards the top. I'm not sure that wouldn't put me in the lower bowl at The Pinnacle ?

Please, please be right DOATHLON.

Norm, thanks for the thread. It's certainly a concern that we don't capitalize on this unique moment in our Husker Hoops history. Hopefully the crowd that will be in the new digs will be people who really want to be there ( like the NIT home crowds in the past ). That is certainly a start. I have given this topic some thought over the last several months. The one thing I have thought of is bringing some enthusiasm to the section where I will be sitting. I'd like to approach it like it is my responsibility to do what I can to encourage others to have fun and be loud in my section. My hope is with all things being new and the current uptick of the program that others will be more willing to join in than if I'd have tried that at the Devaney. That being said here are some broader suggestions in the spirit of this thread..... I like the idea that Silverbacked1 has with the other teams intro, just being totally quiet. I also loved the drummers thing from last year. I say that as soon as the other teams intros are done the drummers come out and everybody goes absolutely nuts. If you gotta have a little music video thing on the scoreboard, keep it fairly short. Then as OUR team's starting lineup is being introduced, everybody just makes great effort to go nuts. I like the "GOT IT !!" idea for 3's. For the timing problem, you wait for the PA guy to say " three pointer by Nick Fuller" then everybody yells "GOT IT" as soon as he gets the words out of his mouth. Not big at all on copying others people stuff too closely. Like someone mentioned back in the early 90's, when we and lots of other people used the song that maybe Kansas popularized ( rock and roll 2 ? or whatever it was called that someone posted the youtube video to in this thread ). Stay away from other's stuff ...do our own. All of a sudden we start playing "Sweet Caroline" or do the "jump around"....really ?? I don't think the standing until we score thing is going to go away, so we have to make that better. Really get after the other team and then when we score our first bucket just go bonkers. Here is a point Norm was making, helping our team rally when they are down--let's say we have a crappy start and get down 10-0....then we finally get our first points of the game. We have to go nuts at that point and really get after the other team/encourage ours with huge fervor. Free throws. In my opinion you keep the other team guessing. Sometimes you have everybody behind the basket totally quiet and one person screams bloody murder as the guy is shooting. The next time there is lots of motion by everybody. You can of course used signs and different chants and yelling funny things ( even innocent silly things ). I hate the left right left right thing...tons of people do this, too cliche. I'm just throwing out silly ideas....make up a chant or something stupid like "2-4-6-8 SIT DOWN" or "you fouled out, go sit down" and repeat it 5 times or whatever. I'm sure someone can come up with something classic that can endure ?? "Husker Power" , we seem to have varied opinions on this one. Someone mentioned that it works good at the football games how they do it. IMHO, it does not work how they do it at the basketball games ...it's slow, forced and OLD ! I love the idea of a victory celebration song or haunting chant as the game winds down with the victory in hand.

With another big, "wacker" I see vooch heading out about as much as Benny. You think that would be used as a late addition for 2014 or 15? i cant see vooch walking he seems like he likes it here, and to be honest i think he's about to make some waves this year in limited action, Benny tho may get lost in the shuffle(and i like benny) as Tai, Ray, Petteway, Biggs can all handle the ball, he is to small to be a 2 guard and with Hawkins, and Fuller here as well i just dont see a lot of playing time in 2014 depends if he wants to stick it out and fight for PT in 2015. ive always been of the mindset you hold on to 7 footers you can always ask peltz or other walk on guards to contribute what benny brings to the table with possible better results. Benny > Peltz and it's not close. you missed the point...you cant keep benny on if dosnt improve this season which i hope he does, as i like his defense. But if he dosnt you keeping a guy on schollie that is 5'8'' maybe, dosnt have much of a offensive game and is log jammed at guard for mintues. by potentially wasting the schollie and not giving it to a big foward or bigger guard, when you could just as easily release benny should he not improve and give those mintues to lets say peltz or another walk on who isnt taking up roster space and can contribute something simliar to what benny gives. I like benny but if his offensive game dosnt improve were playing 4 on 5 whenever he is on the court because no team respects his outside jumper. I understood your point, just after reading about Peltz before last year, well I bought into the hype and was very disappointed. What "hype" ? I don't remember the hyperbole going crazy. IIRC, he was a pretty important part of the getting the season off to a really solid start, which laid the foundation for the season being a pleasant surprise. He ran into confidence ( shooting ) issues and then injury issues. He went to war for my team= I love the guy. He was not touted as much of a scorer unless you go back to his HS days. He and Benny both struggled with confidence with their shot as the season and stakes got higher (understandable considering neither of them were high end recruits ). We just discussed on this board what a woeful shot Andre Woolridge was his FR year, it's just not uncommon for a first year guy regardless ( Jaron Boone struggled with his shot and free throws his FR year too ). I don't expect Mike or Benny to play much this year, because of the increased competition and their ceiling is likely not very high let's face it...just trying to defend them a bit.

Less than 3 months until Nebrasketball Season

I know Danny's last year some of the basketball players flashed what they said was a "west coast" hand signal that was on the poster and media guide. There was hub-bub about that and those were pulled off the shelf. -
Hammond starts his visit today. Looking forward to the report when it's over. Basketball recruiting has to be brutal. You... --only have a few spots usually --can't afford misses, --have timing issues (wondering if you still have a shot with this other better player/can you afford to wait for plan A if Plan B wants to commit) ..all that kind of stuff.

I'm thinking that's what I had Dean. I just called them "Dr J's". You could buy "irregulars" at Gerry's Sporting Goods-downtown Lincoln for half price ( around $20 ) in the early '80's. That's all a poor boy like me could afford. When I got the paper route and the money started rolling....then I think I purch'd some of the full priced ones. I used to wear through the bottom of them playing on cement and would then try to fix them up with "shoe goo"....never worked very well. Adidas "top 10's" were pretty cool and seemed well built. Never had a pair though. -
Historic Game of the Week, 1997-Nebrask at ISU
lang replied to hal9000's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Thanks for posting this. I had to take the time to watch the last few minutes and OT. Bernard, Mikki, Cookie, Hamilton and Lue the only ones that played in those minutes...pretty decent bunch. Wow was Lue something. They mentioned at the end of OT Cookie was only about 50% free throw shooter....one of the many things he got better at throughout his career ( pretty sure he was a FR on the this team). -
July 13th is my birthday, and this is truly the only thing I wanted. Hey mine's the 12th ! Yep me and Bill Cosby Hopefully that makes me cool

You got an even better chuckle than a Fred Flinstone chuckle out of me on that one.

We keep hearing good things about Terran. Just makes me more excited to see him play. Thanks for posting this 'cwg.

Do tell more. He was on for the whole hour right ? Any other tidbits would be appreciated ! I did hear about the last 5-7 minutes and some guy from Broken Bow said his kid was a scholarship player for Indiana. His question seemed to be why didn't NU recruit him or does NU back off when big programs get involved. They asked him his sons name and I'm sure they were thinking this guy is nuts....anyway he ends up saying that the kid lives in Indiana ( went to HS there I assume). They had to cut to the end of the hour. Anyway I didn't quite understand what the caller was getting at. I was running errands, I should have noted the kids name better to memory as I can't remember it now. -
Historic Game of the week 93-94 vs. Texas
lang replied to hhcscott's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Wow, pretty cool. Thanks for posting these Scott ! Keep it up. Can't help but think this years team will resemble the 93-94 team in numbers of decent players and size etc. -

Count me in on being surprised that Andre Woolridge was on the all-Fr team. I don't remember that at all.

I'm not going to draw any grand negative conclusions about our recruiting if he decides to go to Miami of Ohio. I would just point out again that both Sai and Mathew A have noted how honest coach was with them. So, if he chooses Miami of O, it COULD simply be that he sees the opportinity to play early and often. Where as with us, that MAY not happen.
