                                          Huskers Face Familiar Fighting Illini Sunday

The Nebraska women’s basketball team returns home to Pinnacle Bank Arena hungry for its first Big Ten Conference win when the Huskers take on the Fighting Illini of Illinois on Sunday. Tip-off between the Huskers and the Illini is set for 2 p.m.

 

While the Huskers are hungry for a win after dropping their first three Big Ten games to ranked opponents, the Fighting Illini will be equally eager for victory. Illinois has opened conference play 0-3, beginning with a loss to Maryland, before suffering setbacks to Purdue and Minnesota.

 

Nebraska is led by 6-4 freshman forward Jessica Shepard, who is averaging team bests with 18.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. The Illini are led by 6-3 sophomore center Chatrice White, who is averaging team bests with 18.1 points and 9.6 boards per contest.

 

Nebraska welcomed the return of one its top players off the bench with Maddie Simon scoring nine points at Maryland. She’s averaging 6.1 points per game, despite missing six contests with a broken arm. One of the Illini’s top players off the bench has been 5-7 guard Brooke Kissinger, who is averaging 5.4 points per game.

 

Nebraska leads the all-time series with Illinois, 9-3, including five consecutive wins.

• Jessica Shepard leads NU with 18.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, both on pace to be Nebraska freshman records.

 

• Rachel Theriot ranks 10th nationally with 6.6 assists per game.

 

• Rachel Theriot owns 537 career assists, moving her within 26 assists of Nicole Kubik at No. 4 on the Nebraska career chart.

 

• Rachel Theriot ranks No. 18 in career points at Nebraska with 1,194. She needs 49 points to catch Brooke Schwartz on NU’s all-time scoring list.

 

• Natalie Romeo ranks 18th nationally with 2.9 threes per game while leading the Huskers with 41 threes on 41.8 percent shooting from long range.

 

• Natalie Romeo is just the sixth sophomore in Nebraska history to hit 40 or more threes in a season, and moved into a tie for fifth with K.C. Cowgill among NU sophomores with her three at Maryland.

 

• Darrian Washington has totaled 12 points and 12 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action this season, including three points and two rebounds in five minutes in her Big Ten debut at No. 8 Maryland!

White is probably their biggest threat offensively. Obviously an inside threat, but she's been shooting 3's a lot lately. (3/4 against Minn)  Can shoot them for decent percentages. Can't leave her alone on the perimeter. Some people like Anya, RB43, or Maddie might be a good ones to guard her around the floor. Hold her to maybe 10 pts. hopefully....and/or get her in foul trouble.

 

This is our game to get a bit back on track. We should have most everybody back. Maybe give Rachel T a break and rest her some.

i watched most of the second half of the illinois-minny game. illinois did start to shoot the ball better late in the game. i don't know, maybe it was because the game was so far out of reach they relaxed a little. can't speak for the first half, but, it appears illinois can make shots. 

 

hoping it is the start of something good!

Illinois is in the midst of a six game loosing streak right now basically playing only 8 players. Another interesting tidbit for local high school enthusiasts is that the Kissinger girl from Minden is averaging 5.4 points per game playing just over 17 minutes per contest for Illinois. Most of her points have come behind the arc hitting 19 three's so far this season.

Everyone was back for Maryland game. Hopefully that will continue.

I think there will be a good matchup between White and Jess the former AAU teammates. Hopefully we stay out of foul trouble and can wear her down and use our post depth to our advantage.

It also looked like Illinois didn't play their thug ball that they have in the past. but if they are short on the bench then that style wouldn't work so well. Illinois missed a lot of easy shots at the start of the Minny game and Minny hit just about everything they threw up.

Illinois recently lost their outstanding forward Cierra Rice to a knee injury (possibly for the season).  She was averaging about 14 pts. per game and led Ill in 3 point shooting at 45%.  By comparison White is hitting 20%.  Sierra was Freshman of the week a couple of times earlier one time sharing the honor with Jess.

I thought you were joking but now that I've watched the first quarter in TV and have seen Illinois travel multiple times on several possessions with no calls, I see you were NOT joking.
