Huskers Return Home to Tangle with Defending Champ Penn State

After a successful two-game Big Ten road swing, the No. 17 Nebraska women’s basketball team returns home to open a two-game conference home stand when the Huskers take on Penn State Thursday.

Tip-off between the Big Red and the Lady Lions is set for 6 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

After opening Big Ten play with back-to-back losses to Minnesota and Maryland, the Huskers bounced back with a pair of comeback wins at Michigan State and Illinois last week. NU trailed by six with under four minutes left before rallying for a 71-67 win over the Spartans. Sunday at Illinois, the Huskers rallied from a six-point deficit with just over eight minutes left to post a 58-53 win.

All-American Rachel Theriot continues to lead the Nebraska backcourt. She is averaging 18.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. While Theriot leads the Husker backcourt, Emily Cady provides production and mental toughness for Nebraska in the post. Cady is averaging 13.3 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Tear’a Laudermill, Hailie Sample and Brandi Jeffery round out a solid and experienced starting five.

Penn State comes to Lincoln as the three-time defending Big Ten regular-season champion, but the Lady Lions have fallen on hard times with the loss of four starters from last year’s squad that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Lady Lions shared the conference title with Michigan State last season.

Penn State leads the all-time series with Nebraska, 5-2, but the Huskers rolled to a 94-74 victory in the last meeting at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Probable Starters:

Nebraska Cornhuskers
3 - Hailie Sample - 6-1 - Sr. - F - 7.3 ppg
23 - Emily Cady - 6-2 - Sr. - F - 13.3
1 - Tear’a Laudermill - 5-9 - Sr. - G - 11.9
13 - Brandi Jeffery - 5-7 - Sr. - G - 7.9
33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - Jr. - G - 18.1

Penn State Lady Lions
12 - Lindsey Spann - 5-6 - RFr. - G - 16.3 ppg
5 - Sierra Moore - 5-11 - So. - G - 11.4
1 - Candice Agee - 6-6 - Jr. - C - 10.1
10 - Keke Sevillian - 5-7 - So. - G - 2.4
44 - Tori Waldner - 6-5 - Sr. - F/C - 4.4

Nebraska’s starting five has combined for 375 career starts and has started all 15 games together in 2014-15.

Nebraska ranks No. 3 nationally with 12.5 personal fouls per game.

Nebraska is 22-3 all-time at Pinnacle Bank Arena, including 3-2 against top-25 foes.

Brandi Jeffery has transformed herself into one of the Big Ten’s best rebounders as a senior. The 5-7 guard has grabbed 106 rebounds on the year, smashing her previous season best of 65 (2011-12). Jeffery ranks 13th in the Big Ten with 7.1 rebounds per game.

Rachel Theriot ranks No. 2 in the Big Ten with her .926 free throw percentage (50-54).

Rachel Theriot has played the full 40 minutes eight times in 15 games this season, including seven times in the past nine games.

Emily Cady’s 1,253 career points rank No. 16 in Husker history. She needs 31 points to catch Janet Smith

listened to matt and connie tuesday night. sounds like the only player they definitely will redshirt is Washington. i thought maybe Smith's name might come up as a possibility, but, coach yori is still planning on getting her back. if i heard coach yori correctly, Smith has only played in one game.

The only game she has played on is the Utah game for like 4 minutes and reijuried her foot.

Kaminsky is cleared to play per Sean callahan.

The only way Chandler could redshirt is through a medical. Since she played in a game, albeit for only a couple minutes, she "burned" her redshirt.

true. should have added "medical" for Smith.

I thought it was determined by the number of games the team played and how many the player had played in. The gal from minny got a red shirt after starting every game she had played until her injury

A "medical redshirt" allows a player to get an extra year of eligibility if (1) she has played in 10 or fewer games,  and (2) has a season-ending injury.  Banham had played in 10 or fewer games, AND had a season-ending injury.    I don't know how strict the NCAA would be on the second requirement.  One would think a chronic stress reaction might qualify, and a doctor could state that rest through the season is indicated.   But Connie suggested on her show that Chandler and Jasmine couldn't meet the "season-ending injury" part of the test for a medical redshirt.

A non-medical redshirt is only available when the player does not play at all.  So Chandler's 4 minutes in one game disqualifies her for a standard redshirt.   I would think they could get the season-ending requirement given the chronicity of her problem.  However, based on Connie's remarks last night, either we think she can help us this year and therefore we don't want to pursue a medical redshirt, or they think she couldn't meet the second requirement.

it used to be a percentage of games played (20%), but I believe it has now changed to a certain number of games.  Probably to be more fair to the players on teams that don't make the postseason.

Wishful thinking maybe, but hope we're lucky enough to get a lead in the game, and some of our bench gets playing time.

The starters are due for a little break. ...and the newbies desperatly need time on the floor.

It was a concern early that we could be pretty inexperienced next year...but now even more so. We'll have a couple of starters, and Havers with experience.....but that's about it. ...unless things change somehow.

Shepard will obviously make a huge addition, but she has to heal properly, and get into playing shape. A tall order all things considered, to be able to play in the B1G.

This freshman class (and Kalenta) will really have to step up next year. As has been mentioned...wonder if Connie will try to find a transfer, foreigh player, etc, since we have some open schoolies.

The seasons about half over.... :o

Nice to see the bench get lots of playing time. !!!

Romeo, Romeo, Romeo, :D

Havers may have played her scrapiest game yet...she was tough in the paint. Dove to the floor several times to get balls. Took charges....Havers battle with Penn St's big girl..... got her to foul out.

Smith played OK, but the rust showed....glad to see her mixing it up. What little she played, you could see she does seem to have a definate feel for the game.

Kalenta can shoot....

Great game for the kids...they were relaxed and having fun.

A glimpse into the future and the future looks bright!! Now let's keep them healthy!

Natalie Romeo what ever you're eating for breakfast...don't stop! Good to see Chandler Smith tonight. From the time she got in she looks like once she shakes the rust off is going to be a fantastic player. Her shot will start to fall for her.  Also thought Jasmine Cincore looked pretty good for what little time she graced the court.

So pleased with the way Brandi Jeffery is playing this year. Without her we'd wouldn't have the good record we have. Tee needs to break out of her slump starting now. Finally got to see Anya K. Thought we'd see her a few games ago. The kid hit some big shots!

Would have liked to seen little Emily Wood for at least a couple of minutes!

Do you think Cincore has the ponies that T does? that first step she put on the PSu for a layup was wow.
