In my most humble opinion, Miles' high likeability quotient was not helpful to Bo's situation when the decision makers compared the two. Nevertheless, the way that the last two football hiring/firings have played out may be impelling NU toward placing more emphasis on the importance of having a respected basketball presence to fit in with the Big Ten footprint. Our football program will be perceived as a farce unless the new hire is a miracle man.

I do agree that if bo had tim's personality, he would still be the coach. Bo did himself no favors with his dimeanor.

Hard to argue with the AD.  He clearly has defined goals and expectations, and apparently Bo did not meet his goals/expectations.  The buy out is significant, especially when factoring in the assistants.  Likely to cost us about 10 million or so.  I personally believed Bo could bring us championships...but it is simply my opinion, and my opinion along with a nickle couldn't buy a cup of coffee...soo,,.it is what it is.  We will lose some players, we will lose some recruits...and much will depend on the next hire.  So we will see,

I am not sure what is on Bo's report card...but I assume it looks something like this:

Brings in high character kids ~ Pass

Kids graduate ~ Pass

Has a passion for the game ~ Pass

Wins consistantly ~ Pass

Positive relations within the university and athletic department ~ Fail (or so I hear)

Winning big games or "games that count" ~ Fail

Media relations ~ Omaha Fail, National Fail, Lincoln Pass

Fan support ~ Split decision

Taking a quick look at message boards from schools around the country, they're ALL talking about this, and I find it interesting that the most common word used in these discussions regarding Nebraska football is "irrelevant".  But my question is, if we're so irrelevant....why is everyone talking about us?

The downside of firing Pelini at this juncture (and I'm not talking about the merits of whether he should have been fired or not) is obviously the high cost of the buyout.

One advantage, though, of doing it this year is that we have a very small senior class so the adverse effects on recruiting due to replacing a coach should be blunted substantially compared to where we would have been if we had been expecting to sign 25 or more players.

I mean, if you're going to have to make a change, it's probably better for the program to make that change in an off-season when you don't expect to have a very large recruiting class anyway.

The issue that you may have to deal with however, is that we may lose underclassmen as well.  I would speculate that some players (especially those with redshirt availability) may consider transferring.

Whoever comes in will have his work cut out keeping those critical members of the team.  We may see a few more JC recruits for a couple of years.  Remember, one key to Bo being fired is his failure to win the big games.  There will likely be pressure immediately on the new head coach to do so.

Wisconsin just went thru a coaching change and is coming off a beatdown of the Huskers going on a 56 0 run and now playing for the Big Ten title. It can be done. Depending on who we hire it will dependent on if our current talent fits his system. Right now we don't have a QB on the roster that I'm comfortable saying they are the future.

Well, no matter when you do it, if you do it, you're going to face transfer issues.  So, again, one mitigating factor involved in the timing here is that we don't have a lot of automatic attrition due to graduation.  Not a lot of for-sure spots for a new guy to have to fill in his first recruiting class, one month into the job.
