Here is the situation.  No one on our team has more than 3 fouls.  There is just under 3 minutes left.  Both the Huskers and the opponent is out of timeouts so subbing is going to be tough. The team we are playing is average on defense and offense.

Who do you send out on the floor and why?

For me its:

Petteway

Gallegos

Shields

Pitchford

Smith

Rationale: I don't have a "true" point guard because Gallegos and Petteway can bring up the ball, and lets be honest, they both pack more of an offensive punch than Parker or Webster this season.  And if they need to dump the ball Shields can help break some pressure.  I have Smith in the game to rebound, play defense, give us our only legitimate post offense and more importantly shift Shields to the 3 position where he can better drive to the bucket.

That lineup looks pretty good to me.  I have wondered why we haven't seen it at all.  I understand we cannot do it for long periods of time with both viable big men in there.  But end game I like the thought.  And to be able to use it end game we would need to use it a little bit at other times and a lot in practice so they get used to rotations defensively with each other.

We are one player short in my view.  We need one more reliable player that is a threat to put the ball in the basket.  This lineup you pointed out probably has our 5 best on the court at least.  That is worth something.

This year it does seem like any lineup we put together is patchwork at best.  We don't seem to have 3 "big ten starters" much less 5.

I think we are 3 players away, BUT some of those players may be on the team already.

This team could really use:

Established Big Man

Point guard that has some ability to lead the offesnes, get assists and is a threat to score.

Shooter, we need another one (In addition to Ray).  Weather that is Hawkins, Fuller or some kid shooting 3s in a Sydney Iowa gym right now.  We need to be able to punish teams for packing the paint and someone who Shields, Petteway and our PG can pass it to when they drive.

You might want to sub out Leslee offense/defense at every stopped ball.  If he gets fouled it's likely to be just like a turnover.

I would probably take out Leslee as well. He's been pretty abysmal over the past games.

I would either put in the starting lineup or Benny instead if tai just to put him on defense and strengthen that side.

There are some variables with this.

If the team we are playing runs a full court press, 3/4 court press, or trapping defense, I would want Parker or Webster playing at point.  They take care of the basketball better than Ray or Terran would.

Therefore, the team would like this:

PG Webster or Benny, if Tai is struggling

SG Gallegos

SF Petteway

PF Shields

C Pitchford

If the team we are playing against runs a pack it in the lane defense, I would want some shooters on the floor.

Therefore, the team would like this:

PG Petteway

SG Gallegos

SF Hawkins

PF Shields

C Pitchford

Rivers: Don't recall seeing Pitchford and Smith on the floor at the same time this year so and Smith appears to be playing hurt. To add energy and defense and grabbing a key board, I want Rivers on the court

Gallegos/Webster: Depends on situation. If we are tied or leading, I would choose Webster to run point and free Petteway up to create. If we trail and need a shooter, I would choose Gallegos.

No timeouts and no really any incentive to foul so I am assuming we can't do a lot of offense/defense.

The opponent is average on defense and they run average sets therefore they don't pressure unless they are in desperation.

Webster is an important part of our future. First, I believe he can do the job with the game on the line.  Second, the experience he is gaining this year is invaluable for the years that follow.  In addition to Tai, my four others are:

Terran

Walter

Shavon

Ray
