At least Doc didn't get the chance to ruin him.

Shields looks better and more athletic this year, along with everyone else.  The team must be on a better program.

Yeah good point.  Miles is the far superior talent developer.  Not saying Doc would have ruined him, but I doubt he would be this good right now with previous staff.

He would not be in the positions on offense that he's getting in where's being successful.  With Doc, we'd be reversing the ball and Shavon would be one of the posts switching high and low, looking for the dump down.

I guess I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth.  Instead, I'll just be happy we have him and that he's showing the ability he's shown.

Let me just add this to that:  Remember how we've been saying for years -- for YEARS -- that you just need that one special player to come along, an under-the-radar recruit who turns out to be a lot better than the recruiting services predicted?  That one special kid can elevate your program.  Remember how we've talked about that for years?  Hoping to land that one special kid?

I could easily see Shavon being that player.

It's taken you this long to see that, Norm?  ;)

Who wanted to get rid of Benny Parker?

I did, for one. He changed my mind last night, and I'm not afraid to admit that I was wrong. I probably underestimated how much the injury impacted his play last year. I always felt he was a good defender, but he didn't distinguish himself as a great passer last year, and his lack of confidence in passing up good shooting looks was frustrating.

Benny still can't shoot, but if he can continue to bring what he brought Friday night, then he'll be a valuable contributor. I consider him to be the most improved player I saw from last year to this year.

I think the best comp is Paul Pierce. Smooth, not crazy athletic but finds his way to the hoop woth some surprising hops.

I'd take that every day of the week & twice on Sundays.

As far as the OP title, I'd prefer to thank Will and Senia Shields first & foremost.  By the way,Shavon has one older sister, Sanayika, who plays basketball at Drury, and a younger brother, Solomon.  Who knows, maybe we'll see another Husker (in Solomon) from the Shields household!

I was one.  I have to think Biggs and Gallegos eat into his minutes but he will help depth and be a spark.

I do think Serj though is a guy that somehow ends up elsewhere.  Though its the first game he looked completely lost out there and had Miles and Smith telling him where to be a couple times in his short time on the floor.  He just looked so unathletic moving around and just didnt seem to fit imo.

I thought the same thing about David Rivers after his first year. I believe a little patience is in order here.

If I'm not mis-remembering, and correct me if I am, but as I recall, Shields wasn't the primary target for Doc.

It seems to me that Doc was really after Benny, and it seems to me that Benny and Shields were a little bit of a package deal, which Doc was most willing to do - owing to the fact that Shavon is a Husker legacy.  But the real recruiting target was Benny.

Am I not remembering that correctly?
