It always came as in email form for me, at least it has the past couple university jobs I applied for.

The declination document my buddy received was an actual letter, it was personalized and quite nice.

It might depend on the position and how far along in the process he got.  I didn't get very far.  It was nice of them to do that though.  The benefits are really nice if you can find a position where your soul isn't sucked out of you...

Small schools still send rejection letters that are personalized (trust me...)

 

Big schools are all emails... however, a big school is more likely to let you know that you didn't get it... which is nice.... I think.
