Expand First, let me say I shouldn't have added that last sentence. I admit it was uncalled for. My bad. I just thought "disgusting" was too strong a word to use for this situation. And yes I know in hindsight it appears these roster additions didn't turn out as planned. But it's water under the bridge. I also recognize the coaches need to do a much better job during this upcoming portal season. Silverbacked1 1 Quote

Open the purse earlier and it saves you what you occurred. You had Brice at a good cost. You wasted him by being cheap early. We went all in on Rollie way too early as well. We didn’t get some of the guys we brought in and ended up desperate and overpaid to get Berke and Braxton. The highest paid player on a Big Ten team shouldn’t be a career 4.9 and 4.4 big man from Fresno State/Washington. I hope we do a better job being aggressive with some studs right away this year. The way I see it we have 4 starting lineup spots up for grabs. Our money better be heavily spent on dudes who can score the ball. wait too long to lock in some dudes and you’re at risk of spending the same money on players who aren’t as good. Expand We need to be dropping the bag on a legit point card and an explosive power forward to pair with Mast. A season can be a good role player in the starting lineup. And wings are relatively easy to find. A legit point guard and a legit power forward or two things that we have never really had consistently under Hoberg, and that’s where we need to spend. You add those two things to go alongside Mast and you’ve got a very nice core. Berke isn’t a focal point. He’s a role player at best. And he can be a nice role player because of his ability to be somewhat effective at both the four and the five. He’s just not good enough to occupy one spot or the other. He can still get 20 to 25 minutes per game in a backup role. Edited March 18 by nustudent Quote

Vinny Posted March 18 Report Posted March 18 I agree we likely overpaid for Meah. If Berke stays and gets closer to his ceiling, we won't have overpaid. His stats we're trending up pretty significantly before he missed time and they were still up with his bad stretch after injury factored in. Another jump next year is likely in order. hskr4life 1 Quote

Expand It’s definitely unfair to discuss whether we overpaid someone who still can provide for us in future years. If NIL was big 3 years ago, we would have been told we overpaid for Keisei. Expand Were his stats trending up? He had the one good game vs Ohio State. I wouldn’t call that a trend. I’d also argue that worrying about his future production is somewhat off base as well. We had an opportunity to build some success with Brice and Juwan coming back. Being successful in the moment is and was more impactful than what may happen down the line. Especially given Fred’s complete inability to do anything in the high school ranks, future roster building has relatively but nonexistent. I don’t see why we’re all the sudden worrying about it now with a mediocre player in Berke. Edited March 18 by nustudent Quote

Expand His rebounds more than doubled, his assists tripled, blocks and steals up, his shooting percentages were all up even with the post injury slump. Before the injury he was low 30s on three. If he can hit 35% next year he creates a lot of space. He’s not far off being a difference maker. If “worrying” about future production is off base, let’s close up recruiting and portal discussion permanently. Quote

If you can find a guy with multiple years who is legit….that’s fine. But when you turn over 60%+ of your roster each year and your high school recruiting/retention is non-existent, it seems odd that you waste your last year of Bruce and Juwan in favor of an extra year of Berke down the road. Huskerpapa Posted March 18 Report Posted March 18 Meah should never been brought in. That is not a reflexion on him or his play. He simply was not a fit to our schemes; and frankly there were no adjustments made to fit his game. Berke on the other hand does seem to be a good fit. He was only a sophomore and seems to fit our schemes. He has an upside that can be leveraged and he has potential for growth. Lest we forget, he was one of our better defenders. Morgan played well in spurts . He should have been a 10 to 12 minute player; but was certainly mediocre in his more enhanced role. thrasher31 and cornfed24-7 2 Quote
