Kansas celebrates and plasters that damn bird all over everything. And while I am very aware of their established place in the pantheon of college basketball, why do we run from Herbie every chance we get? In a world full of Bears/Cowboys & Wildcats," Cornhuskers" is one of the most singularly unique and distinctive monikers in all of sports. Herbie epitomizes that. Is he seen as (pun intended) too "corny" or just not hip enough for the youth of today? I don't think there should be a 50 ft. tall Herbie at center court, but come on, let's give Herbie some love.

It's the dissonance between educational elitism and agricultural vocationalism. It's part of the reason we lost AAU membership, Ag research isn't considered "science." No one is a bigger proponent of education and intelligence than I am, but the practical reality is agriculture, the systematic planting and harvesting of food crops is the greatest human innovation of all time, it literally created civilization, led to the need for math and writing for record keeping, increased populations and on and on... I believe Nebraska need to embrace Herbie and the Cornhusker identity as symbols of noble human labor and effort, not as the bumpkin that some have misinterpreted the image to symbolize.

The Herbie projected above could be interpreted as both sexist and racist in todays' PC society. The Jayhawk is totally neutral on both accounts. If NU wants an acceptible logo, then the Big Corncob might be a good idea, Even Lil Red would be better. I'm not being judgemental, just making a political observation.

We simply have no need.

We're the only major public school in the state.

BTW, who is the mascot of the Indiana Hoosiers?

Indiana does not have a mascot...and a bit more about them...

School Colors

Cream and crimson, often represented as white and red. The official IU Crimson is Pantone® 201.

Mascot

We don’t have a school mascot, but we’re known as the Hoosiers—a nickname for natives or residents of Indiana. Read more about this unique term in “What’s a Hoosier?”, an article from the Indiana Alumni Magazine.

Little 500

The Little 500 men’s and women’s bicycle races raise money for IU student scholarships and are the centerpiece of what has been called “The World’s Greatest College Weekend.” Held each April, the Little 500 was featured in the Academy Award–winning film Breaking Away and has drawn celebrity spectators such as John Mellencamp, Barack Obama, and Lance Armstrong, who called the Little 500 “the coolest event I ever attended.”

I hate Lil Red. I'm ok with them not using Herbie on everything, everywhere. Just use the standard "Block N" logo.I think it's a better representation of the universty and state as a whole. Herbie does have a hick stigma. We aren't all hicks.

But I would like to see the Herbie with the basketball logo make a comeback

if we give the logo a face lift it might work

^^That, or anything like it, won't work

We did do a facelift and it is embarrasingly bad (see below).  I've actually noticed the old school herbie is on more apparell lately.

The "Iron N" is a great brand...it's our iconic red N along with the brand of the "Huskers" so you it's easily identifiable to people not familiar

The "new" Herbie's are embarassing, and Lil red flat out blows. Don't run from your heritage, embrace it. Nebraska is the gateway to the Old West. A land of ranchers, and Sandhills and Chimney Rock. As Keith Jackson once said, "those boys are corn-fed, & hand spanked".

No matter what Herbie or Lil Red you have, there will be a large group who doesn't like it.

It's pretty tough to screw up a N.
