Guess I should break down and get a Rivals membership so that I don't have to keep asking for favors, but this was just tweeted by Robin Washut

#Nebrasketball might have a better shot with 5-star 2014 guard D'Angelo Russell than you might think... ($$) http://nebraska.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1472058

And since I don't have a Rivals account I am relying on the kindness of others.

OK, so there's a Rivals premium article that talks about how the Huskers might have a better shot with this kid than you might think.  Can anyone tell us what the connection is?

If an offer can be "big news" then it seems like offering a 5-star kid would be bigger news than offering that unranked Texas kid that people were gushing about over on HOL the other day.  Especially if we actually have a shot at the kid.

OK, two videos.  One is a Rivals 5-star for '14 and the other is a 4-star for '15.  We've offered the '14 kid, D'Angelo Russell.  To my knowledge we have not offered the '15 kid, King McClure.  My opinion?  I think I like McClure better.

Norm basically he said he takes the recruiting process very serious and wont discount a school based on their name.  He wants to be thorough and explore every avenue to make sure hes making the right choice.  He likes Coach Smith so far and likes the video and pictures hes seen of the hendricks facility and PBA.

In the article D'Angelo says he's going to pick a school that's the right fit for him and not choose a school based on prestige and basketball tradition. He admitted that he knew nothing about Nebraska when he offer came and said he was both 'shocked and intrigued' by the offer. I don't think there is any personal connection here. Russell said he is taking it very slow and since all the top dogs are interested in him his plan right now is to let the rest of the 2014 class fall in place before he settles on a decision. He likes what he has seen so far and was blown away when shown pictures on the practice facility and what PBA will look like.

There really isn't any connection.  He was shown photos of the new practice facility and arena and really liked them.  I think he also made a comment to how he doesn't necessarily have to go to a "name" program.  Something to that effect.

I like the vision of Russell... second to none.  I think that is why he is rated so high

Doc offered 5 star guys every year. He just never signed any. I'm not defending Doc, just saying that until we sign one there is nothing new here except the publicity.

Miles signed a 4 star in his first year and had the #1 overall recruit on our campus. I have more faith in him than I did with Doc. Not to mention he has already won as many games as Doc did last year.

McClure has crazy athleticism.  Look at some of his dunks how far he glides to get to the rim.  Most good players his age and size, gliding that far, would have to lay it in.  But he's still up enough to dunk.  His dunks look effortless.

Also, he has an unreal cross-over dribble.  He can get to the rim and he can finish when he gets there.

He also has a very nice looking pull-up J.  So, if you cut him off on the dribble, he's able to elevate on a dime and drop that mid-range shot.  Nice high release on that shot.  Good form.  I like the looks of his stroke better than Russell.

Now, Russell has what appears to be exceptional touch even if his technique is a bit loose.  It's a very quick release and very accurate as well.  He can penetrate and dish or hit that mid-range shot.  He also looks to have 3-pt range although his outside shot doesn't look real pretty.  He has plenty of touch, though, so he's going to get his shots to drop.

But he doesn't seem to be getting to the rim and finishing like the McClure kid.

I mean, I think they're both obviously very good players.  For all I know, we have no shot with either one and the McClure kid might not even know that we exist.  At least the Russell kid knows that Nebraska is out there, right?  But, of the two videos, the McClure kid is pretty impressive IMO.

Yes I can, it's going to take two money signs for us to land this kid. Just two...

I'm not criticizing Coach Miles or supporting Doc. Just pointing out a fact. Until Coach Mile actually signs one of these guys I won't get my hopes up. I believe we need to win some more games and become more competitve before a U.S. 4 or 5 star will give us a serious look.

I assume the 4 star is Tai Webster. But where is he a 4 star? Neither Rivals nor Scout have ranked him.

ESPN has him as a 4-star, but I watched part of his New Zealand National Champ'ship game and ...

... let's just say it's difficult to judge how good he might be because all the players around him are so bad.

It felt like I was watching Nebraska's Class C-2 boys state.  I expected more from Tai, honestly.

I watched those games too, and agree with you Norm. I still have hope that Tai will be everything we all expect. Regardless!, I am very optimistic regarding Coach Miles & staff recruiting prowess. Having said that, I will not hold my breath on a 4 or 5 star, and give the coaches accolades for offering highly rated players, until they actually sign one. And I don't count Tai as a 4 star until he proves he is as good as his press!

Please name some.  I'm not sure he actually went after that many.  I do think Miles recruiting efforts, and methods, have a lot "new" about them.  Doesn't mean they will work, but I do think new approaches are being utilized.

Just off the top of my head, Doc offered Bobby Portis, 2013 Rivals 5 star from the same high school as David Rivers. Committed early to Arkansas. I believe Ben Mclemore from St Louis, who eventually signed with Kansas, was a 5 star during most of his recruiting process. There are two or three others but I don't have time to look them all up.

I am in agreement with you that Coach Miles is a superior recruiter to Doc, but it is not as if Doc never offered these guys. He could just never sign them! I hope Coach Miles signs tons of them! And maybe he will, but I think first he has to prove himself a bit more by winning at a higher level, which I am confident he will do.

Good post; I didn't remember much discussion about those guys; glad we at least tried to recruit them.  I got to see McLemore play earlier this year from the third row at Allen.  Definitely worthy of a 5 star.  If he stays past his sophomore year, I'll be surprised.  Glides out there on the the court.

I'd be happy to sign a lot more "legitimate" 3 and 4 stars, and guys who really have solid offers from top level programs (not just interest, slow play offers, etc.).  Certainly don't expect anyone to ever come in here and start signing 5 stars.

Doc recruited 5 star players. Most recently Justise Winslow. Not defending Doc, but he did recruit them. We are seeing the effects of a renewed energy within the program. Everyone is following the basketball recruiting more closely and it is being covered more. Again, not comparing Docs recruiting efforts to Miles' efforts, just explaining this phenomena we have going on with all the increased attention/coverage.
