For some reason I'm thinking a 1-3-1 would be good. Sent from my VS500PP using Tapatalk As long as they have something to switch it up with, preferably something that could start out looking like a 1-3-1. Seems like that 1-3-1 last year had certain vulnerabilities. I'm trying to remember what I, as a rank amateur, noticed last year. If I remember correctly, certain action got you a kick to the weak side wing for an open 3. Like if the offense overloaded the ball side and then skipped to the weak side wing. Trying to remember. Anyway, I noticed there seemed to be a certain vulnerability and I didn't study any film, so coaches who actually do study our 1-3-1 on film are going to see stuff, and we need some alternative zone that can start out looking like a 1-3-1 at the outset of a possession and then becomes whatever it is to throw the offense off. Main reason i dont see Tanner Borchardt getting any minutes on a healthy Nebrasketball team this year. If Roby can slide into the 5 and be an effective mismatch (which i think he can) that about elimanates Tanners chances. Edited October 5, 2017 by khoock Quote
hhcmatt Posted October 5, 2017 Author Report Posted October 5, 2017 How about a 1-2-2 zone? (or 3-2 if the PG isn't a good shooter) Quote

The weak spots in a 1-3-1 are definitely the corners, and I seem to remember some open 3s off the scenario you described as well. I remember one play where they ran a pick-and-roll to eliminate the top defender, the ball-handler drew Roby in the middle and Nebraska was left with one defender to cover two men on the weak side. But all defenses have their weak spots. You just have to execute whatever you choose to do better than the offense. Quote

I heard on the radio, I think it was Robin Washnut, say that Tanner has put in a bunch of work and transformed his body. Robin said he has dropped 12 % body fat. That's why I am super excited about this team. We have options if players get in foul trouble. khoock 1 Quote
Norm Peterson Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 I've heard Tanner is a player. Like, a guy who would have seen plenty of floor time in years past when we didn't have the kind of depth we have now. Could still see some floor time. Quote
Jacob Padilla Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 I think people might be over-hyping Tanner's ability a tad bit. He's strong but still earthbound and will struggle to finish against length and athleticism because of that. There is a reason they found him just hanging around on campus as a student. That being said, the transformation he's undergone is certainly not hyperbole. He looks like a completely different dude. And he does have a base of skills that can allow him to be effective. He's impressed Miles for sure and he's getting a ton of reps right now while Jordy is out. Quote

I am hoping he can eat 3-8 minutes a game when it is needed. Hoping the two other bigs do their thing. Quote

You have to remember Ross Buckendahl started 17 games for the Huskers in 2000-2001. Bronson Schliep had 5 career starts between '02 and '04. Andre Almeida started 17 games in the '12-'13 season. There were games that year where Miles didn't sub at all in the 2nd half. What I said was not overhyping Tanner. He would have played those years. Hell, three years ago, when Leslee Smith had a bad knee and Moses Abraham had a broken arm and our depth along the front line consisted of David Rivers and a semi-apathetic Walter Pitchford, Tanner would have played then. Norm Peterson Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 How about year three of Doc Sadler where our starting center and power forward were both 6'5" guards? I think Tanner might have seen the floor that year. Any year where knee-less Chris Balham got minutes, Tanner probably would have played. Quote
khoock Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 (edited) I dont see Tanners value being very high this year. But he will be a nice "Plan B" sort of guy next year imo. Jordy will need a backup and theres a good chance Brady Heiman is a still a walking stick figure when he gets on campus. Just a thought. But having a a big bodied, strong practice player to bang around with Jordy and Duby all year will be extremely beneficial. Edited October 6, 2017 by khoock Quote
uneblinstu Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 Tanner's your ideal walk-on. He had mid-major football offers but chose to be a student instead. He actually did that here for basketball, too, before changing his mind. He's a legit college athlete. Maybe not B1G, but if that's what you're filling your walk-on spots with players like that, that's a good situation. Quote
Huskerpapa Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 I am not certain there is a need, but it may be nice having an enforcer available when the need arises. Tanner may be just the man. Quote

Johnny Trueblood had D-II looks and Justin Costello had an NAIA offer (but should have been a D-II player based one some of the guys that have gotten offers at that level recently). No offense intended, but it's a pretty significant upgrade from Jason Shultis and Mohammad Elradi. Quote
