The NCAA Tournament has not been kind to the B1G.  During the season I had thought the B1G was stronger than the Big XII.  Clearly, that is not the case.  Baylor and Texas are superior to every B1G team and OU's easy win over Purdue caught me by surprise.  West Virginia nearly topped Ohio St. in Columbus and even Kansas State won a tournament game.  Top that with South Dakota beating Minnesota in the NIT.  Maryland's loss to Washington is somewhat perplexing.  Oklahoma State is the only team that has a clunker performance.

The PAC 12 is strong though South Dakota St. let one get away from them at Maples Pavilion tonight.

What are South Dakota St. and South Dakota doing to be so successful?  They are not getting major recruits yet they are winning and winning in post season play.

Just some quick observations regarding the Yotes and the Jackrabbits:

SDSU:  12 on the roster saw playing time, 8 of them averaged over 16 minutes per game, 4 averaged over 10 points in scoring, 8 played in over 30 of their 33 games played, no one averaged over 30 min/game

USD:    13 on the roster saw playing time, 9 averaged over 10 minutes per game, 2 averaged over 10 points scoring, 12 played on over 30 of their 34 games played, no one averaged over 30 min/game

Compared to NU:

NU:       12 on the roster saw playing time, 9 averaged over 10 minutes per game, 2 averaged over 10 points scoring, 5 played in over 30 of the 31 games played, 2 averaged over 30 min/game

My guess?  INJURIES and DEPTH

USD has 4 ladies from the state of Nebraska on their roster (and they will gain another this fall), 3 international players, and some homegrown talent.

SDSU has a lot of SD ladies and several from Minnesota.

I do know that when my daughter was being recruited for track and field, the coaches told us they like to recruit regionally and coach kids up.  I'm wondering if that may also apply to other sports as well.  Isn't there a young man from western Nebraska that plays basketball for SDSU and is doing extremely well?  I also know that USD and SDSU have signed VB, FB, and softball players from Nebraska recently (in addition to track and field and soccer).  They do a good job of getting the kids that NU (as a power 5 conference school) decides not to take a chance on.

Coaching and their philosophy  (which includes the whole staff, recruiting, and hard work, and maybe most of all ....the team chemistry. Don't see a bunch in foot boots either.)

Oregon State earned another impressive win tonight for the PAC 12 over Baylor in Dallas, no small accomplishment.  I just did not think that OSU was athletic enough to stay with the Bears.  However, their overall height, perimeter shooting and strong defense overcame Baylor.  Coach Mulkey had a nice "jacket throw" in the first half and once again was worth the price of admission.

The Beavers will be overwhelmed by UConn, but then who isn't.  The PAC 12 has clearly upgraded Women's BB and is the top league this season.

Liked the look of OSU. Very athletic, seem to recruit a lean, and decent speed group of players, with tough mind set. Good big inside that is very active and moves well.  Their defense really slowed down Baylor.  Their coach is a good game coach.

speaking of the PAC12, anyone know what happened to Cal Bears? i was pretty surprised when, a few minutes ago, i looked on a site and see they ended up 15-17? i believe they were ranked 18th when the huskers went out there? heck, they didn't even qualify for the wnit.

Cal Ladies were ranked #22 (AP) when we played them.  I don't follow them so don't know what happened after we played them, but I was not super impressed. Athletic, yes, and had some length (we couldn't seem to stop their Kristine Anigwe), but not better than the Lady Huskers imho.  We led as much as 20-4 early, trailing 44-38 at the half, coming back to tie at 70 to go to OT.

Our passing was just not crisp; Cal got a lot of steals & turnovers resulting in points in transition.   I think we lost the game more than Cal won it.

Yea, kind of a one hit wonder...and we were the hit..ee.  (If you understand)

remember .....we were ...real... young then

I think NU will have a fine season next year providing we get some luck with health and a reliable point guard is produced.

i am also pretty optimistic. it will be interesting to see how many of this incoming class can give the huskers good minutes.

Absolutely.....If we can just stay healthy for the year..... we certainly have the makings for a new point guard in a least three of our newcomers. We could use Nat or Cincore in the short team early, and then newbies ASAP. One could step up and be ready to go early?

After this just ended season ...we have to have the law of averages in our favor ??...giving us a chance for a healthy year.  Last season we just never could put it all together with so many relegated to the bench.

Very optimistic for next season. Our bigs should be much improved and more used to the grind. We'll have some needed experience at guard, plus a wealth of new talented blood to work with.

Regarding the point guard position, I think this is where Chandler Smith's departure has really hurt the program.  I believe she would have been the one to run the show.  The girl from Illinois seems like a logical candidate and leave Romeo to "shoot the three!"
