How close were we? = How close are we?
HB replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Of course some contributing to Creighton's NIL also contribute to UNL's. That's what Omaha money does. Yes, people out and about know who many of the donors are to Creighton NIL. Word of mouth travels in those circles. That's how I know how much Walker was paid, and a few of the donors who got it there. Note, with various collectives around the country, the requirement of disclosing donors depends on the corporate structure of the collective. Some are actually set up as 501(c)(3)'s, which have certain donor disclosure requirements. Big Red Collaborative was set up that way. 1890 and Athlete Impact Management were not. Trev can't directly solicit NIL funds. What he says in private conversations is at his risk; people do that stuff all the time. Obviously there are careful and veiled conversations happening. I can tell you that in the early NIL meetings for Nebraska, Fred attended as a meet and greet, and then left before any actual NIL soliciting took place. This is the wild west, and evolving, but yes, there still needs to be separation between the athletic department and coaches and NIL. -

Wow, you truly don't get NIL, and I'm not going to waste anymore time reading your absurdly long tomes on it. Carry on. -

With regard to "frankly, the dollars required shouldn't be an issue, the NU Ath. Dept. is flush with cash": You do understand that the athletic department can't fund NIL, right? The collectives aren't UNL or its athletic department. And the AD and coaches can't directly be involved in NIL solicitations, allocations or payments. I realize Trev has been talking bout potential future changes in what can be paid to the student athletes through the academic institutions, but right now your NIL comments do not reflect an understanding of how it works. -

Stud guards win in college basketball. Northwestern had a couple of big time studs at guard, with vast experience in the same system. We finished 11th and lose 2 of our best 3 players for sure; hopefully not 3 of 3. Recruit your brains out, Fred. -

I have been saying for weeks we’re going to have significant roster turnover, and need to be very active in the portal at multiple positions. IMO without high level portal infusion this isn’t a roster that in ‘23-24 will be successful. Talent-wise we are currently “not close”, and are more than a couple of pieces here and there from being in the upper half of the league and getting in the dance. Player development alone won’t do it, we need an upgrade in high level talent. Now go get dudes! -

He’s in play. Also coveting a big who isn’t in the portal yet, but if he declares people will go berserk

You are a world class diplomat....

Not specifically, although the last word i got was positive about Kesei coming back. That's not "take it to the bank" or "done deal" type of stuff. But I heard a relatively decent number on what it would take. We would have no trouble coming up with it if we can work out the legalities. I don't know that they're counting on getting the rules changed in time. Perhaps more of an interpretation of "international students can't receive money while here" kind of thing, and perhaps the endorsement side. I think there is confidence they can make it work even without a rule change, but I don't know the details.

Not at all how it works. Matt Davison (not "Davidson") is an employee of 1890. It is not "Davison/1890". The Peeds own it and fund a bunch of it. People with Matt paranoia or disdain overstate his role. There are numerous people involved, at multiple levels (both paid employees such as Joe Selig, and volunteers who help with the asks). While they want to broaden the donor base, like anything else, a few big hitters are giving lots of money. Some are more inclined to support basketball than others. 1890 and those involved know who those folks are (you can see some of them in the Nicolson seats at PBA). When those asks are being made, specific players are discussed, and what it might take to get them. These conversations are not directly involving Fred or Trev, and can't. Yes, there are funds being raised for just basketball. No, Davison can't just unilaterally decide to choose between a football and basketball recruit. Say, for example, a couple of bigs currently on the east coast have expressed interest in transferring. And they are established, really good bigs (stay tuned). People (way beyond Matt) know what it might cost, and the feasibility of raising it. Let's say a certain bigshot gave $50k for the basketball collective last year. Someone is talking to that bigshot now saying "we need $100k now. We can get player X but need the money."

“Command” NIL means he’s good enough to keep his scholarship and stay if he wants, but he’s not gonna be on the high end of allocated NiL money. If he can get more some where else, hey, go for it. “Accommodations” more about playing time, offensive sets, position, etc. Role player vs. The Man. This is now pro basketball. Henry Iba rolls over in his grave.

Dimes' response above is more creative than mine , and more succinct, but here goes.... Traditionally, at year end, (1) you have guys leave that you basically run off, or at least are very frank with them as to expected playing time assuming they'll get it and free up a scholarship; (2) guys that you are direct with about roles and needed improvement but aren't encouraging them to leave; (3) some who go pro; and (4) some you actively re-recruit and do everything possible to keep them. I believe CJ is more in the second category than the first or fourth. The modern day player has a lot of voices in their ear, whether it's a street agents, buddies, family members about why playing time is what it is, why they're not getting X many shots and sets run for them, etc. (hint: most of them aren't hearing that they're the reason for any problems, and struggle to self-reflect on it). I wouldn't be shocked if there are voices in a couple of our players' ears that they are listening to, and that would help cause them to consider transfer options. The 4th category now involves aggressive conversations on the NIL side of things. I believe 1890 is allocating greater resources for obtaining portal transfers than we are for retaining our more average returnees. If that causes them to move on, so be it.

Well, to pick up better players, we need some to leave.

Glad to have another geezer on here to join Papa and me in remembering watching Larry Cox. But Papa's right, it wasn't Tisdale playing with him; they played at different times--Cox was a senior in '76, and Tisdale played at OU from '82-85. I also remember seeing Waymon for the first time, his freshman year, in a big snow storm where those hardy enough got invited to move down and make a bunch of noise. My memory is we won a very close game, but it was easy to see what a great player Waymon was going to be. Sad that he passed at age 44.

That same word is that we didn't run him off; he's welcome to stay. But he's not going to command a good NIL deal or any other accommodations.

Mickey, if you're paying attention, apply for some jobs in the SEC....

I understand the sentiment about the shiny new objects. But I differentiate portal season from recruits, because at least the portal acquisitions have a track record in college vs. the more speculative high school recruit. IMO the next few weeks will be very interesting both in terms of who is leaving, and what portal guys we get. And yes, F the NBA.

Illinois St. (5-8) vs. Nebraska (9-4-1) Series Game Thread
HB replied to Bugeaters1's topic in Other Huskers Sports
Much colder than Friday and yesterday. Was 31 and "feels like" of 19 at the game starting time. Hate to miss a game but this decision was correct (and mandated by rule). -

What are the AD expectations for Fred next year?
HB replied to huskerbill85's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
A really good class signed in November would help, in addition to a decent record during the season. Upward and onward hopefully. Portal crucial. -
This will be a fun portal season. A lot of prospects already reaching out. We’re going to be selecting vs. recruiting this time around.
