I think Ryan realized what he was saying and immediately tried to make it about fifth-year transfers. 

 

I think he was talking about any player who intends on being at a school for only one year (i.e. one-and-done, which, technically fifth-year transfers are).

 

He wants to "build from within" and he can't do that if multiple freshmen come in and go pro after one year.

 

I'd take more stock in his "we don't do rent-a-player here" if more of his players graduated.

 

Last I heard he was running a 40% clip.

 

If that's true, that's a comment that could really come back and bite him in the arse.

With a record of 35 wins and 3 losses, the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team has proven itself to be a powerhouse this season. But the school is seriously struggling with ensuring that players graduate. According to the GSR, a mere 40 percent of Wisconsin’s male basketball players who started in 2007 graduated six years later. According to the federal rate, things are looking even worse for Wisconsin: Just 33 percent of players who started in 2007 graduated.

As much as I would like to take a cheap shot at Gasser, I'm not sure how much of that is his fault.  The NCAA scheduling of events, especially championship events, doesn't make it very easy sometimes for college athletes to also be students.

I think schools should adopt a sports major.

Let these kids major in what they're interested in.

Classes about dealing with the press, money management, etc.

College of Sports and Stuff:

Basketball 101: "Basketball on the College Level: Shit that Will Get Your Ass in Trouble, Don't do it."

In this class, students will learn how not to flunk school, how not to flunk drug tests, and how not to get in trouble with the law. Open to all students. No prerequisites. 3 credits (taught by Staff).

Basketball 101 Lab: 5 credits (taught by Staff). Location: Various, but primarily Hendricks Hall. (May be taken in conjuction with Basketball 154.) By permission only.

Basketball 154: "Remedial Basketball: The Fundamentals and Stuff You Really Should Already Know."

This course is designed for the redshirt or transfer student who needs that little extra boost to get up to the speed of college-level basketball execution and team-oriented play. If you were as good as your hype, you wouldn't need this class, so quit being a candy-assed wuss and buckle down. 3 credits (taught by Staff).

Basketball 201: "Basketball Strategies and Tactics"

For intermediate students. This class will focus on the finer points of offensive and defensive strategies and tactics in the game of college basketball, including the pack-line defense, pressure man defense, various zone defenses, full and 3/4 court presses, motion offense, various continuity offenses, focusing extensively on the shit Bo Ryan does. And Tom Izzo. Intensive film review involved. No prerequisites, but Basketball 101 or equivalent strongly encouraged. 3 credits (taught by Staff).

Basketball 201 Lab: 5 credits (taught by Staff). Location: Various, but primarily Hendricks Hall. By permission only.

Basketball 354: "So You Think You Want to Declare for the NBA, Huh?"

This class is intended for juniors and seniors who have a strong interest in continuing their basketball pursuits in a post-graduate environment. Coursework will focus on real-world, practical skill enhancement and professional development. Prerequisites: Basketball 201 or equivalent. Available to freshmen and sophomores by permission only. 3 credits (taught by Staff).

Can they open this class up to Soph/Jr/Srs who didn't pass the class the first time? Also, they need to add:

 

Officiating 101: "Makeup calls, favoritism, and your worst enemy."

 

This course is designed to teach you that life is not fair. That you will always have somebody above you controlling every aspect of your life and telling you that you're wrong, even if you didn't do anything.
