He has cut Wake Forest from his list according to Recruit Scoop on twitter....he also himself tweeted "down to 5"

This news kind of bothered me. It makes me think he really hasn't made up his mind yet. I figured he already knew where he wanted to go and would just cut his list from 6 to 1 on march 7th.

That being said, I still think Atewe is most likely going to pick Nebraska.

The most positive sign to me is that Nebraska is still the only official visit Atewe has taken besides KSU, where he's not going anyway. Wouldn't you think, if he were really into Clemson and Auburn, that he would have scheduled officials there by now?

I'll be really disappointed if we don't land this guy. We have so much to offer him in terms of an immediate role on the team and the premier conference in college basketball -- plus the facilities and the new arena.

Chris Harriman is a really good recruiter. Hopefully he can pull this off.

I totally agree.  He's the kind of talent that should flourish in Miles' system, both offensively and defensively.

The B1G is a huge stage and I think Atewe wants to be in the "show".  Some kids want to blend in and be successful without the bright lights.  I don't get that from him.  I think he wants to be good, play in nationally important games, and have his success recognized by as large an audience as he can.

I don't believe any of that is a negative.  I'm simply trying to say there are some kids who prefer to have their success and  stay away from the heat of the kitchen.  I don't think he's one of them.  I don't have any personal knowledge of the situation.  It's just a feeling I get.

Now, look at his list and tell me which team gives him the best chance for that.  Go Big Red!

one thing I find interesting is Atewe tweeted he will be 19.  Unlike most college bound kids he is already a year ahead of the incoming players.  This probably means theres hardly any room for growth height wise but would hope it helps with maturity as we tend to get better at that as we get older and wiser.

noticed that too. Shields doesn't turn 19 until June.

Good.  If they aren't an NBA prospect, I want them to be as old as possible when they start college.  Just gives them more time to physically mature and have an advantage over their opponents.

Mitch McGary from Michigan is a true freshman and turns 21 on June 2.

yeah that was the biggest knock on McGary and where they ranked him because of the fact he was so much older than everyone else had he already peaked but was playing against younger inferior talent or is there room to grow.  I know his draft stock has gotten worse the last couple years because it seems like everyone is catching up physically to him.

How important do you guys think this guy is to get?   I am not sure how important I think he is for some reason.

His game videos on youtube would say not too important, but his 30+ offers would say we have to get this kid. I'm going to trust Miles on this one. Can't imagine Atewe helping much next year though. Maybe 10 minutes a game at best. He is very raw.

The importance of Matthew depends on what the coaches are thinking (and they aren't telling). If Matthew is their top priority and is holding out, then he is extremely important. If, on the other hand, the coaches have him as a back-up plan to someone else, then here's hoping for the someone else.

Every day that passes without a verbal commitment from Matthew increases speculation that he is a back-up plan. Here are some reasons why:

1. None of the big-name schools (e.g., Duke, Georgetown & UConn) have produced an offer.

2. The lower tier schools (e.g., California) did not come through with either an offer or a visit.

3. Charlotte is on the final list.

4. The Thomas visit cancellation did not pair with a public commitment from anyone.

5. There is nothing from recent games about huge progress from Matthew that would warrant new interst from major schools.

Granted, these reasons are consistent with an I-want-to-commit-on-my-birthday position. However, remaining adamant on such a position seems odd.

Heres giving better than 50/50 odds that a potential transfer or two explains all this.

He has stood pat on his March 7 commitment date so I doubt anything youve stated above is true because he isnt committing to anywhere for another couple weeks.  Now if March 7 comes and goes without a commitment then we will truly know.

Atewe has good offers.  I think that says a lot.  It doesn't say he'll come in as a polished player and make an impact right away his freshman year.  But it's hard to look past his athleticism, which is substantial for a guy his size.  That combo of size and athleticism is rare.  If he was also blessed with skill, he'd have 5 stars and be going to Kentucky.
