Jessica Shepard is on the Naismith Girls Player of the Year Watch List

Its the most common injury in teenage girls playing sports.  At least it happened now so she has some time to recover to hopefully be available for conference season next year.

Im no doctor (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express :P ) but I would generally think that this would be a 6-9 month rehab for an 18 year old girl.  So say, for instance, she has surgery next Wednesday (January 7) I would possibly expect her back at or near full speed by the first day of practice next fall.  6 months would be July 7th and 9 months would be October 7th.  Which would mean she would not be able to participate on the summer foreign trip to Australia.

For reference Leslie Smith tore his acl on July 3rd had surgery a few weeks later and should now return to playing without restrictions here in a few weeks.  This would be about a 6 month turnaround- granted he is a big strong male athlete so recovery time should be less.

She may well miss the USA team tryouts next summer......she really wanted to try to do it again.

Just hope she recovers and is well for the long term.

Both of my youngest son's had one of their knees scoped and repaired at about 11 or 12 yrs, and both recovered in short order, and have no issue a fews years later.....but they weren't torn ACL's either.

From this mornings journal Star.

An MRI on Tuesday revealed the tear. Following surgery early next week, Shepard will be out at least six months, eliminating the chance to play in the McDonald’s All-America game in April and putting her spot on the U.S. team this summer in doubt.

Shepard’s goal is to be full speed by August, when the Husker women’s basketball team goes to Australia.

Jess was at the game today.  Dayna Finch came over to her seat and they exchanged words; Jess had tears in her eyes after that encounter.  And then, just minutes before the game, Connie came clear across the court to talk to Jess for several minutes.  I have never seen Connie do that before.  Very nice.  Jess was upbeat; every one was asking her how she was doing and she said "pretty good".  I heard it was an ACL tear only, with no meniscus injury.
