No. 12 Huskers Expect Difficult Test from Speedy Roadrunners

The No. 12 Nebraska women’s basketball team returns home for another clash with postseason-caliber competition when the Huskers battle Bakersfield Saturday afternoon.

Tip-off between the Huskers and Roadrunners is set for 2 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Huskers are coming off a thrilling 60-57 win at Creighton on Thursday night. Nebraska built a 16-point halftime lead then withstood a pair of furious CU rallies in the second half.

Emily Cady notched her fourth double-double of the year with a team-high 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds and three blocks. Rachel Theriot added 16 points and a season-high nine assists, while Brandi Jeffery pitched in five points, four assists and a career-high 12 rebounds.

The Huskers will be challenged by a speedy and experienced bunch of Roadrunners from Bakersfield. Tyonna Outland leads a small but explosive squad that was picked to win the WAC this season. Outland, is averaging 17.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Brooklynn Hinkens, who is contributing 14.0 points per game and shooting 44.9 percent from three-point range. And Alyssa Shannon carries one of the nation’s top assist-to-turnover ratios.

Nebraska owns a 2-0 all-time record against Bakersfield.

GAME NOTES:

Emily Cady had another good game. 13 pts., 15 rebounds and 5 assists. Huskers win 54 - 45. Turn overs are still killing us, had 16 this game. Shooting percentage went up to 34.4%. We dominated the boards 52 - 35.

Really ugly game.  We just gutted it out and got a W.   At one point late in the first half we were shooting  16% from the field.  Tired legs.  Numerous missed layups.  Find a way to get a W and get some rest.  Havers looked disinterested today.  And she only played 15 minutes Thursday, so fatigue shouldn't have been as big a factor with her.  Need more out of her, especially until we get Kalenta back.

So goes Rachel so goes the Huskers. Looked as if we were going through the motions a lot of the time. Need to get our legs back under us. Maybe this week long layoff will be good for the whole team in more ways than one. Would be nice to raise our three point shot percentage up about 15 percent.

Thought the Huskers need to start mixing up the defenses and go to a zone periodically and get away from the man.

Good for Emily Wood!! Seeing the big smile on her face after hitting that shot was well worth the wait!!

Connie made an interesting comment in the post game interview. She stated the Emily Wood has really good parents and that she is a team player.

My wife and I looked at each other when she said that. And my wife remarked was that a slam towards names not mentioned here.

I really like seeing Emily Wood get some good minutes. She broke a scoring drought that we had, and grabbed a couple of rebounds, and had no turnovers. I like this kid. Hear we have a scholarship available.

Plus she is not afraid to get the dirty work done for the team. Numerous times she was on the floor after the ball. And hustled down the floor. I got to PBA about 85 minutes before the game and Woody was out shooting threes and for fifteen minutes I don't think she missed a shot. And Connie said she out Woody in to try and break the zone but was just off and maybe a bit nervous.

you bet. my eyes got a little wider when i heard coach yori mention that. wondered if that would get a mention on the board.

i sure can understand where if a coach has an education in psycology, it can be a boon!

the curiosity in me wonders how bad it got, or, if coach yori nipped it in the bud (before it became a big distraction for the team). i have a tendency to lean towards the latter.
