HuskerActuary Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 Brad Bigler is Southwest Minnesota State's head coach. He was also Tim Miles' starting point guard for three seasons at SMSU. In his junior season - Tim Miles' last at SMSU - the Mustangs went 28-7 overall, 17-1 in conference, and made it to the Elite Eight in NCAA D-2. Earlier today while researching SMSU, I came across a series of events that happened to Bigler in 2011 and 2012. It is heartbreaking - be prepared to leave the article feeling terrible for Bigler and infuriated at the legal system. Link It's two years late, but I wish there was something we could do to help Coach Bigler and his family. edit: I just noticed that Brian Rosenthal published a story on Bigler in the LJS yesterday here. doc1394 1 Quote
Norm Peterson Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 Why are you infuriated at our legal system? Because it didn't seem to take drinking and driving seriously? Hey, that's just a reflection of society as a whole. These kinds of things used to pop up over on the Rivals board and the voices of those who said stuff like "everybody does it; I've done it a number of times" were loud and proud. They have no notion of the harm they can cause and, frankly, they don't give a damn. It was not just one thread; it was several. And these guys just kept saying "I've done it; everybody does it; no big deal." Be infuriated with them, not the legal system. Our laws just reflect our attitudes. Quote

I just know that as the father of two children under the age of three, something is seriously wrong with a guy getting only 30 months of prison after the third arrest of drunken driving, the last of which resulted in the death of an innocent baby. This wasn't necessarily the direction I was intending to take this thread, though. Quote

Those are also probably the same guys that insist that we need to sell beer at the PBA because "we're all responsible adults and we should be able to enjoy a beer with the game if we so choose". Those are also probably the same guys that insist that we need to sell beer at the PBA because "we're all responsible adults and we should be able to enjoy a beer with the game if we so choose". Hold on now. Just because someone has the opinion that they should be able to enjoy a beer at a game doesn't mean that they also think it's okay to do that and then drive home. And certainly people drink and drive all the time, away from those games, even though it's not sold in the arena during the time the game is going on. Clumping the group that wants beer sold at the game with those guys who think drinking and driving is okay hardly seems fair. REDZONEDAN 1 Quote
49r Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 How many folks who go to games don't drive there, and then back home again after? I'd say it's an insignificant number. So, insomuch as to be statistically insignificant, one could come to the logical conclusion that people who feel it's okay to drink at the game are also okay with drinking and driving. Seems fair to lump them together to me, ajb. Quote

Seems fair to lump them together to me, ajb. Not fair to lump together. Not at all. While plenty of those idiots you mention who think drinking and driving isn't a big deal probably do wish to have beer sold during the games, they are finding ways to be idiotic without alcohol being sold in the arena during games. And there are plenty of people outside of that idiot group who have the opinion in favor of beer being sold at games. Your logic sucks because while a majority of people do arrive at the game in a car, that doesn't mean they have to be operating the car when they leave. And just because you arrive in a car, and think it's okay to have a beer at the game, doesn't mean you're in favor of drinking and driving. atskooc 1 Quote
hskr4life Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 Just goes to show that the saying "You drink, You drive, YOU lose" isn't always just YOU that loses. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 For the record, while I stand staunchly in the pro-drive responsibly crowd, I'm not opposed to drinking in the arena. Or outside of the arena. Or on the way to the arena. Just be loud when you get there and make sure you're safe to drive when you finally get behind the wheel. Fortunately, it takes so long to get of the parking garages, you have plenty of time to go sober up at Gate 25 while the traffic clears out ... Wait, wut? a0t0w0 1 Quote

Seems fair to lump them together to me, ajb. And to answer your question, of the people who go to games I would guess less than half of them drive there and then back home again afterwards. So out of a crowd of 16,000 I would guesstimate that over 8,000 of them don't drive. And 8,000 is hardly an insignificant number. Quote
49r Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 Okay, okay, no need to get all grouchy. I'm not here to argue. You've made your point. Clearly for every 8,000 sloppy drunks there are always 8,000 designated drivers in every case and everyone who has a beer out at an event is always 100% responsible about how they conduct themselves. We obviously need to have more access to beer in public because God knows there isn't enough as it is now... bball23 1 Quote

Okay, okay...I'm done being grouchy and I'm done arguing. Carry on. I just didn't want to be thrown into the 'okay to drink and drive' category just because I like to drink a beer or because I use automobile transportation to the games. Everybody tackle a drunk if you see them trying to get into their car after a game this season! Seriously. Everybody play their part and confront and question people if you think they are not okay to drive. Quote
