KNTK - Drop The Mike:  What Game can Nebraska lose and still make the NCAA Tournament before the B1G Tournament? (2/25/14)

Mike thinks that the Huskers can afford to lose to Illinois due to the fact that they’re going to play in Illinois after their bye-week AND they’re a 51-100 RPI. Listen to see who the Huskers have to beat to have it all be forgiven.

John and Matt finish the hour with a call.

(as a caveat, I have real strong reservations about posting these Nebrasketball Mike calls, because 1). I'm not sure they're terribly relevant 2). I don't know if the station managers should be promoting this caller like they are and 3). I'm not all that convinced this isn't just an act put on by a Creighton fan, doing their best to mock the stereotypical "idiot" Nebrasketball fan.  Apologies if I offend, it's not my intent.  I would, however, appreciate some feedback on whether I should continue to post Mike's calls.  Unless I hear otherwise, this will be the last one)

Same guy called into Nick Bahe's show and puts on the same act all the time. I think 1620 does it on purpose. Creighton fans eat it up, and they know it.

Wow, that is two minutes I will never get back.  I remember why I rarely listen to local radio sports programming.

Kind of a fun little piece of fluff here:

Former Colorado State coach Tim Miles following familiar formula at Nebraska - coloradoan.com

http://www.coloradoan.com/article/20140227/SPORTS0202/302270079

"The formula he used to turn tiny Mayville (N.D.) State into a conference champion and NAIA Division II tournament participant in two seasons isn’t all that different from the one he used to guide Colorado State University to postseason berths in three of his last five seasons in Fort Collins.

It worked before that at Southwest Minnesota State and North Dakota State.

And it’s working at Nebraska, where the Cornhuskers (16-11, 8-7 Big Ten) already have beaten five teams that were in the Sweet 16 of last year’s NCAA tournament — Florida Gulf Coast, Miami, Ohio State, Indiana and Michigan State.

That has put the Huskers in the conversation for an NCAA bid for the first time in 20 years by winning seven of their past nine games."

The B1G Coach's Corner: Dissecting the Nebraska Ball Screen Attack - Off Tackle Empire

http://www.offtackleempire.com/2014/3/4/5466066/nebraska-nebrasketball-coach-breakdown-ball-screen-benny-parker-terran-petteway

"I have to confess I currently live in Omaha, NE and I have had many of my Husker friends ask me to write on the Huskers and Coach Miles. Many have wondered how Coach Miles has turned around this program so quickly with little talent. First of all that is a myth. Miles has three really good Big Ten players in Pitchford, Shields and especially Petteway. Those three players have developed into solid players with enough talent to compete in the Big Ten. More importantly, Nebraska has been able to develop its role players with Benny Parker and Leslee Smith logging important minutes and giving Nebraska some ups in the intangibles department. On top of that, Miles has the Huskers playing solid defense. That always helps. Finally, the new Pinnacle Bank Arena is a great home court advantage and has given Nebraska a sense of identity."

2014 Big Ten Tournament Seeding Odds: March 4 - The Only Colors

http://www.theonlycolors.com/2014/3/4/5469336/2014-big-ten-tournament-seeding-odds-march-4

Nebraska

Remaining games: @ Indiana (40% / 31% / -4), Wisconsin (31% / 28% / -5)
Projected record: 11-7 12.5% / 8.8%; 10-8 46.2% / 41.9%; 9-9 41.3% / 49.3%

Nebraska can rise as high as the 2 seed if they win twice, Wisconsin and MSU loses twice, and Iowa loses to Illinois; however, two losses, two Indiana wins, and an OSU win (or two MSU wins and two Illinois wins) could drop them as far as the 7 seed.

Week 18 B1G Power Rankings - Indiana Jumps After Iowa & OSU Wins - BT Powerhouse

http://www.btpowerhouse.com/2014/3/4/5470006/week-18-b1g-power-rankings-indiana-jumps-after-iowa-osu-wins

#5 - Nebraska (Average - 4.5)

Nebraska moved up to #5 this week after splitting against Illinois and Northwestern.  Many still think the Huskers have a serious shot at NCAA Tournament contention, but they certainly still have some work cut out.  If they can finish their season strong and get that first round Big Ten Tournament bye, they might have a shot.
