I think their concern was gym space and  they still wanted top 4 seeds to get a double bye.

Top 4 still would.  Right now, the first round is only three games.  Rounds 2 & 3 are four games.  It doesn't seem like one more team would affect much, the gym isn't going to be packed for the 1st round.

 

Maybe it is to protect potential bubble teams?  The 8 or 9 gets a win without a pesky 16-seed beating both.

And a win vs. any of those low seeds is pretty useless to the resume too.

I think the decision was just math to account for 18 teams. This way the top half of the league (1 thru 9) gets a bye.  Finish in the lower half and don't get a bye (or even an invite to the tourney for the last 3 teams).

A couple games on now, root for Duke and Mississippi State. Georgia and Clemson are very much around us in brackets. Need to be big Alabama fans vs Arkansas as well
