I'll agree with you on the yell-squad observations, Norm. We don't have "Rock-Chalk" or whatever chants they do 150 miles south of here, and would love to see some of those things implemented here, one way or another. That said, audience participation isn't on the top of my list of concerns for the program right now. I'm more worried about what the staff and the A.D. are or are not getting done between now and next year.
-
I have a hunch those PBA numbers are paid attendance, not actual. If that's the case, it's not fair to compare them to the BDSC numbers. The A.D. has gotten lax on reporting actuals, which is a pet peeve of mine. I would guess they report actuals separately the last few years about 75% of the time. Nevertheless, it's clear that actual attendance has been up since moving to PBA.

Norm, I just read through this and conclude that you are really bagging on the fans. If you are going to characterize 14K folks as "crappy" and "docile at best" for having the audacity to buy tickets, drive to Lincoln from who knows where, but not stand on their feet at all times (or whatever you consider involved), we're going to have to agree to disagree. Yes, there are a few bad apples, but I don't think it's fair to generalize the way you did above. People have made all kinds of excuses for the team being tired at the end of the season, and just excuse the losses that way. Shouldn't fans get the same leeway? Forgive me if I didn't stand on my feet all 2nd half of the Michigan game, waving my arms wildly, trying to change the karma of a 40 point blowout. All in good fun, Norm. No offense intended.
-
Actually, yes. Improving on a .500 (or whatever it is) home winning percentage will work wonders for fan participation. Those folks on no-sit Sunday weren't standing all day because of a superior yell squad, great halftime entertainment, or even clean restrooms. They were standing because their team was hot and playing for something meaningful in the month of March. Fan apathy isn't all on the fans or atmosphere off the court. I'm guessing I won't get any argument from you, Norm, on this.

Wow. Wikepedia is already on top of our "achievement". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebraska_Cornhuskers_men's_basketball

Good question. 1-0, believe or not. I think that 0-7 record hangs over the program like a dark cloud.

Could Altman end up at Indiana?
-
Indiana fires it's coach after garnering only 3 sweet 16's in the last 6 years. Illinois goes another direction after posting just 4 postseason appearances in 5 years. The difference between our administration's expectations and these other two schools is gaping. I hope this works out for us, because it feels like we are watching the world go by right now.
-
It's a nice thought, and I hope you are right. But I fear the momentum Miles and his staff gained through a learning curve might get overwhelmed by recruit's perception that Miles will be on his way out a year from now. I am hoping we see recruiting this summer that surpasses Doc's 5th summer of recruiting (Shields, Parker, and 3 JUCOs that never made it to campus).
-
That is not a good sign then, if your perception is correct.
-
This really stinks. Like others, I like Horne. And I think he's a player that could really be a nice contributor for us for 4 years if he's invested in the place. I'm holding out for a Ray Gallegos scenario. I could see Miles giving him a long rope to figure out which place is right for him and he might change his mind a week or a month from now. I would be curious to know what his parent's perception of the situation is right now.

2017 G Tywhon Pickford -> Northern Iowa
HuskerCager replied to hhcmatt's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
I'm not really excited about this prospect. First of all, this is an off-guard, not point guard, right? We already have Palmer, Akenton and Gill. Secondly, another player coming off of a major injury. That seems to be Miles' niche - bring in a forgotten prospect who was sidelined with a medical setback and hope their injury woes are behind them. We are beginning to resemble a M*A*S*H unit. -
Your answer is about what I would say, and I suspect many on this board as well. The fact of the matter is, we are doing much worse: Collier Sadler Miles NCAA 0 0 1 NIT 2 3 0 Sub-par 4 3 4 So with that in mind, why are so many of us (myself included) OK with Miles returning for a 6th season? I think the reason is that we hope for better, but we really don't expect it. Clearly, 4 non-tournament teams out of 5 is acceptable to most Nebraska fans, as long as their coach is engaging, hard working and runs a clean program. Even if it doesn't show up on the court in the form of post season tournaments.

1995-96 is the epitome of "what if", but since that has already been mentioned, I'll go with another one. What if NU hadn't blown an OT lead to Kansas St in a 2nd round 1980 Big Eight tournament game, gone on to beat an underwhelming KU team it had already beaten twice in the regular season in the finale, and thus qualified for their first NCAA tournament appearance? That, of course, was the first year that Lincoln hosted an NCAA regional, and unlike now, it was standard practice to let a qualifying team play in the regional they hosted. We might not be talking about 0-7 now 37 years later.

Great question - no answer. I have probably missed something but have been wondering the same thing. IIRC, Kent and Matt made the observation of Jacobsen's lack of PT on the postgame before TM arrived, then proceeded to not ask him about it. I didn't hear anyone ask coach about it last night on the call-in show either. Not a peep in the OWH from Barfknecht in his article on Monday. Wouldn't this be an obvious question for someone to ask?

It just occurred to me. Has anyone seen Eichorst and Boehm with a guest at Flemings lately?

Worst home loss in school history
HuskerCager replied to PimpMario's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Sometimes it's tempting to get down on our fan base for not being engaged or vocal - I know I have before. But if you were there last night, you would have seen 14K in the stands that witnessed the program cap off their 5th losing season in 6 years with the worst home loss in history. And with all that said, there were 50+ fans in the corner of the stands applauding the team as they went off the floor. Kudos to our fan base - they deserve an A+ for perseverance. -
I know that this is a popular theory that has been out there for some time, but I don't think that's the issue. Fact of the matter is, we got hot for 8 weeks in February/March 2014. Smith was around for the prior year and a half that looks much like the the 3 years we have gone thru since.
-
If Miles survives, I would bet the staff will work overtime to lighten the non-conference schedule. Somehow, someway, next year's team needs to be 9-3 or 10-2 going into the conference season. If we walk into conference at 6-6 again (regardless of the competition) there will be a lame-duck feel to the season, not unlike Danny and Doc's final year. Not good.
-
I have to be brutally honest for a minute and just share what's on my mind: 1. I love Miles, et al, but this staff is not going to make us a consistent NCAA/NIT qualifier. 2. In spite of #1, I have little confidence Eichorst would bring in a coach that would do better than Miles (should he make a change this year or next). Wow. That's depressing.

Should we shut down Ed for the year?
HuskerCager replied to Handy Johnson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I get Handy's point. Chronic injuries like Ed's become chronic because there's so much pressure to get players back on the floor. -
Mission accomplished. For one game anyway:)
-
Easily the most talent? Does next year's squad have 3 future NBA regulars and a future Big 10 P.O.Y? Think Strickland, Lue, Moore & Hamilton as in 1995-96. That was probably our most talented (on paper). I sure hope you are right, though.

I hate to be the resident Eeyore, but when I measure your response with what I'm reading online (such as below), I have a hard time being as excited. Copeland was a five-star prospect coming out of high school, but the 6-foot-8 forward never progressed in his career with the Hoyas. He had bright moments as a freshman and looked good in flashes as a sophomore, but he lost playing time this year as a junior and eventually left the program. The connection here is pretty obvious: Kenya Hunter, a former assistant with Georgetown who recruited Copeland to the Hilltop, is now on Tim Miles’ staff in Lincoln. Copeland has one year of eligibility remaining. He will be eligible to play for the spring semester in the 2017-18 season or for the entire year in 2018-19.
