While I would somewhat agree with the point that it is really to early to be addressing this question - this response hits it on the head in my view. Some of the other points people have made are partially correct (and a couple are dead wrong in my view) but the primary point is that the success (assuming we are correct and that is what will happen) has much more to do with Miles and his efforts than anything different that the university has done. Not saying things are not better now - just saying other coaches had the resources at their disposal to succeed also.

The nostalgic part of me likes this hire. I'm old enough to have attended some of those 7 games he coached here. Unfortunately, I missed the half court shot by Bobby Moore to beat KU in '79, Pretty sure you are right, HuskerBB, that Kellogg played for Ted Owens as a freshman. I was there to see that Bobby Moore shot. One of my favorite Husker memories. Don't remember much else about that game but I will never forget that shot.

When I heard that we hired Teddy Owens the first thing that popped into my mind was that his Dad never won a game in the Devaney Sports Center. I was pretty sure that was true and I went back and checked and Ted was in fact 0-7 in his trips to Devaney as the head coach at Kansas. He actually lost the last 8 times played against us in Lincoln and was just 6-19 in Lincoln during his tenure as the head coach at KU. Of course I am sure he fared much better in the games in Lawrence but I did not add those up. Maybe it is a good thing we are moving out of the BDSC before we have Ted(dy) Owens on our staff Ted did have better luck at BDSC as a recruiter as I also recall him being at the HS state tournament recruiting Ron Kellogg who signed with him at KU. Not sure if Kellogg got there to play before Ted got fired - maybe he did for 1 year.

Don't know how many on here will remember this but Frischilla was actually an assistant coach (or almost one anyway) at NU for about 10 days. He was on Danny Nee's staff at Ohio and was coming with Danny but then got a better offer. Can't remember for sure whether they gave him the head job at Ohio then or if it was something else.

Hugh I would not call that person a d-bag at all - maybe an a$$hole, a d!ck or in mixed company a jerk. (You have a PM by the way ) Maybe it is just me - but I thought d-bag had kind of become a common reference for those who tend to place appearance over substance. I guess maybe I get that from conversations on boards about Vegas where it is used as a generic term for those who spend tons of money going to clubs and buying bottle service just so they can be "seen" in the "in" place or to be able to tell people they were at the "hot" club. Obviously I did not intend the term as a complement - but in other places I have actually seen the term used very often for that purpose and at least in a few cases embraced by people who to some extent admit falling within that described class. In any event was intended as a specific descriptive reference - not as a general insult. (and it was intended to be used "tongue in cheek" - maybe not a good joke but was not really trying to make anyone mad). Sorry if I went overboard with the term and offended anyone.

Hate using black personally, but I'm not anywhere near the decision-making chain, so I figure there's no point getting worked up in a lather about it. You nailed it 49r. Personally I think all this "alternative uniform" stuff is complete garbage - have a uniform design for the school in the school colors and let that be it in my book. I really can't understand anyone wanting uniforms in colors that don't represent the school. I think it all just plays into the mentality that how you look is somehow more important than how you play (although IMO the alternative uniforms we had last year looked absolutely terrible as well). That said - consistent with my philosophy that uniforms really don't matter - it is how you play that matters - I have no energy to fight this battle. Let the d-bags and gangsta wannabe's get themselves off on uniform styles if that is their thing.

I see your point. As someone who has lived in Lincoln for awhile it's not about the arena for me. It's about seeing what UNL can do in this town. They own Lincoln. It's really that simple. I don't deny that they help more than hurt, but there comes a time where I just want the city of Lincoln to accomplish something that isn't *driven* by the University. I think the arena is something to be proud of regardless of a "N" on the side or not. There are things going on in Lincoln that are positive that do not depend on the University. But there is simply no denying that the University has a huge positive economic impact for Lincoln - particulalry the downtown area. Lincoln is a great city - but there is no way you could justify an arena of this size or quality without UNL basketball being involved and none of the major projects that are going on around the arena now would be happening without the involvement of UNL athletics in the area. Lincolnites should not be ashamed of reliance on the University - they should be both proud and grateful that the city and the university are able to work together to get these things done.

If UNL wants to put an "N" on the arena as part of their contribution to making this happen the citizens of Lincoln should be grateful that is all they want. I could care less if Creighton wanted to negotiate to put a bluejay on the Qwest/Clink arena. I could argue that might be appropriate as well. But Creighton's presence in that arena is about 1/10 as important to the city as UNL's presence in PBA.

Crazy comment. No way this arena even comes close to happening without the support and involvement of the university. I can sort of understand how some random Joe Blow citizen might not get that and would make this kind of comment. I am really more bothered by the comment of Mayor Beutler which is just about as inaccurate - but certainly nothing new for a politician to take credit for the work of others.

Club seats are priced at $179.50 for the Eagles. Pretty steep but I guess it is only money right?

No doubt this is a move that has some risk. But it also puts Creighton in a whole new level of college basketball. No the new Big East will not be as strong of a league as the Big 10 - but it is much, much stronger than the MVC will ever be. CU fans have long resented the "mid-major" label. Now that lable goes away. Can they compete at the new level? Remains to be seen. But they do have a very good facility and fan base right now - equal to or better than the other schools in this new conference at least in terms of numbers. That - along with the added prestige of the conference gives them recruiting tools they have never had before. Fans may get frustrated by not having as good of a record. At the same time - NCAA appearances are the standard by which many judge programs now and oin the new conference they will now be in a position to get in the tourney just be being in the top half of the conference - not having to win it (or come close to that anyway).

Ubel in my book - he was the glue that kept this team together.

Not replying to anyone specifically here - but this reminds me of a time way back when we had a little freshman point guard who played very little and did not look good at all when he was on the floor. At that time many wondered why in the world we ever gave the kid a scholarship - far more than are wondering why Benny Parker has a Husker BB scholarshi now. Of course - that kid from many years ago is in the Husker BB Hall of Fame now. Not saying Benny Parker is going to turn out to anything like Jack Moore. But Parker contributed far more to the team this year than Moore did during his freshman season. Don't understand why anyone would want to run off a player that at least was a decent contributor at times this season. I certainly hope Benny stays and works to be the best player he can be - and many may in fact be surprised about his role in the future.

I have never been as big a Ubel fan as some on here but to me I thought Ubel was the player of the game by far. To me player of the game is the best player - not the one who exceeds expectations by the greatest amount. Ubel just put the team on his back at the end and willed them to this win.

Totally agree, actually wish maybe they would move one game there for the younger generation. When growing up I always heard about some state basketball game that was there, it was a last second shot called "Miracle on Vine" or something. Anybody else older hear of that? yeah....I believe the guy that made that shot was a tax professor at UNO and passed away within the past year or two.....I can't recall his name at the moment That is correct. Scott Copple was the person who made the shot for Lincoln East. Kent Reckeway was the all-state player for that East team and Kent wen on to play for the Huskers and is now an MD in Lincoln I believe. In that game they beat a Papillion team that included Mike Heck who I think was touted as the first 7 foot player in NE high school history. Mike Heck died at a very young age also.

Just to clarify for people - when the Coliseum was used for basketball the floor ran the other direction - perpendicular to the way the volleyball court now sits. The one set of bleachers obviously did not exist and there was some additional bleacher seating on the sides where students were located - maybe also some on the ends. I went to many games in the Coliseum in those days.

Well - in the 70's and into the 80's the entire A level (all 4 sides) were bleachers filled with students. Back in the old days when I was a student the sold more student tickets than they could fit in the entire A level - if you did not get it early enough the remaining students were relegated to the upper bleachers. When the replaced the bleachers with chair seats on the sides of A they left one side for students for a couple years - but it was a disaster because students standing in those seats blocked the view of the people in the B section behind them. At one point they shot off the back row or two of chairs on that side so no one could sit/stand there. Shortly thereafter they redid the end bleachers (when they put in the video screens and went to floor based baskets instead of the ones that came down from the ceiling). Then they put the students on both ends - with the east end supposed to be students up into the B and C sections. Not sure if the students still get any of those east end B section seats? As with football the number of available student tickets has consistently decreased. I suspect the number of floor level student seats in Pinnacle will be slightly fewer than they have now - certainly not alot more. Unfortunately the number is probably still greater than the number of students who actually come to the games now - so the students can't really complain. I just really regret that they abandoned the idea to just have standing levels in that side student area rather than seats. Not sure if that ever really was the plan - but it was actually a very good idea.

Don't see how we can say either of the calls when we fouled them on 3-pointers were "questionable"? Those both seemed pretty obvious to me - especially the first one on Talley. That one had to be called and was much more significant contact than anything that happened when we took a 3. I have done my share of complaining about refs over the years. Virtually no fan ever thinks his team gets fair treatment from the officials. I doubt if we have ever had a game we lost where somebody didn't put on a post complaining about the refs or some specific call. Overall I thought we had a couple of pre-league games with pretty poor officiating - worse than what we have seen in the conference. Maybe that is just that I am probably more resigned to the fact that we are going to lose games this year and so I just don't get as bothered by the bad calls. But I think it is inaccurate to say the Big 10 officiating is materially worse than what we had in the Big 12 - if anything I would say the opposite is probably true (but we all tend to forget the Big 12 games where we complained vehemently about the refs).

FWIW I agree - I thought Parker did a much better job on Appling than Talley was doing early on.

Good report card. I was really impressed with the effort we put in for most of the game tonight. We stayed in a game where we were totally outmanned by working harder than OSU. Unfortunately - at the times when they did decide to play defense with intensity we really struggled to run our offense and get open looks. Of course, that is pretty much the story of our season - at least in the Big 10 games. Was really pleased to see you give David Rivers the POG. I thought that same thing but did not know if he would get the nod because others had bigger numbers. Still I thought the 2nd half of this game was the best half David has played at NU.

Norm this is a good post and you certainly do deserve credit for carrying the Jeter ball early on. Unfortunately this is not the only "hard to explain" story (recruiting or otherwise) from the Doc Sadler era at NU.

Obviously I don't know what you witnessed - I did see Danny swear at his players plenty of times - at practice and games. Saw Doc do the same thing probably more vehemently than I ever saw from Danny. (Neither came anywhere close to what I heard from Calhoun though - calling a player a f*@k*r was a compliment compared to what I heard Calhoun say). But I am sure Danny swore at his players just as much from 1990 to 1995 when everyone loved him as he did later when people started to complain about it - which was obviously right arount the time he flirted with Rutgers. I know you went to practice alot - surprised you did not see similar things from Doc as Danny because in my much more limited exposure that was certainly my impression. Heck I can remember a practice where Collier went out of his way to embarrass Kimani Ffriend - did not call him out using bad langauge but made it very clear to everyone in the gym that he "questioned Kimani's intellectual capacity" to put it nicely. I will grant you that at times Danny did lose respect of his players - which is the evidence of a problem that would be a concern and is clearly not the situation with either Miles or Pelini. I think in most cases that has a genesis in something other than language used at practice. The boycott you mention came about in large part from issues that were going on far away from the basketball court. Again - I don't personally have a problem with ANY of these coaches in terms of there use of bad language in moments of intensity at practice or during games. Not saying that is the way I would coach necessarily but it is very common behavior in the coaching profession and I suspect that includes Miles at least to some extent - probably less than Danny - but I don't recall Danny doing anything during a game like what Miles did the other day either.
