uneblinstu's post game chatter: ed 6, vol 28 - @ Illinois

The last streak started with a win vs. Northwestern. Let's do that again. -
All good things must come to an end. Thoughts as I watched the game on the DVR. Hope they make sense. This doesn't burst the bubble. - Well, it looks like we missed Gallegos get into foul trouble, so there’s that. - Nice to see Benny hit a jumper. - Huskers didn’t fold when Illinois got out to an early lead. Didn’t expect they would, but nice to see. - Didn’t seem like an overly raucous atmosphere in Champane. - Illinois hit some shots. - Shields missed a couple at the rim he’s been finishing lately. Pitchford and Petteway missed a couple, too. - Nice little jumper by Rivers on the pump fake. First lead at 18-17. - Sounds like we missed Smith get off to a decent start. - Tied at 18 - Couple of really ugly three’s from just about everyone... - Not a smart idea by Shields to try and take on 4 Illini players on the break late in the first half. - Really fortunate at the half to be down 3. Getting 17 from Rivers, Smith and Parker was a life saver. Think how ugly it could have been had they not chipped in. - 0/8 from 3 in the first half. Yikes! - Only 5 attempts from the line, not good either. - Good to see Petteway attack the rim right out of the break. Hit them both. - Took the lead again at 28-27 on the Pitchford dunk just a minute into the second half. - Illinois did a pretty decent job of defending in transition. - Illinios took the lead again at 29-28 - Webster with a big 3. That was cool. - Gah, second chances for Illinois killing NU. - Rivers with a nice little take and finish at the rim. Strong. - Wow! What a save for Shields! - Lots of open 3’s for Illinois, they’re hitting them. - Not much movememt offensively at times. - Petteway just can’t hit anything tonight. - 8-0 run by Illinois - 5 quick points by Petteway to get back in the game. - Really needed to take advantage of that foul after Petteway’s jumper. Probably last chance to get back into the game...and then the turnover after the Illinois miss with a chance to cut it to six... - Illinios length and defense causing all sorts of trouble for NU tonight. - 14 turnovers ugh... Can we organize this for the Wisconsin game? You think this wouldn't fire up the team? Holy smokes! Don't mess with it. Husker Power is awesome and loud. Getting the crowd to perform something else with as much energy is a gamble not worth taking at this point, IMO. Do "Us Always" at some other point. Can we organize this for the Wisconsin game? You think this wouldn't fire up the team? Holy smokes! I say go with Us Always on the tip or to open the second half. My suggestion was tongue in cheek but I think Husker Power works. Don't fix what we have already working. Build on it. As much as I'd love us to be spontaneous, it really helps when we plan this thing out. Really sounds like a 2nd half tip-off sort of deal. Would be truly inspiring if we find ourselves down. That could be good. I'd get behind that.

When does the tournament schedule come out? Do we cheer against his team?
-
Punch 'em in the mouth see how they hold up. Keep taking body shots. Hit 'em with the Petteway hammer in the second half.

Iowa losing is good. They've got controversy around the program, that trip to Indiana on Thursday, and a trip to MSU not long after. If we take care of business, we could likely finish in front of Iowa. Minnesota's not likely to catch us. Iowa losing is good for us. It's our best chance to get to 4th place.

I think there's a little tongue in cheek here, but it's just a new experience. Whether beating Wisconsin is viewed as an upset, largely, doesn't really matter. The fact will still remain that'll be a win over a top 10 (or maybe 5 by that point, who knows) RPI team, so regardless it'll still be a BIG win, a significant one. Whether or not it's an upset: who cares? -
We easily have one of the weakest B1G schedules. We only play Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan St, and Minnesota once. Right. I'm not trying to be the pessimist of the bunch, but finishing 4th doesn't mean we'll be viewed as the fourth best team. That said, I think if we finish fourth, a lot of very good things will have gone our way to that point.
-
The question is, is the fourth place team the fourth best team. Not necessarily a simple answer since all games aren't played in conference.
-
Have you ever heard Rocky Top sung in unison by 100,000 people? It's intoxicating.
-
Great. Then Illinois better hope they hit their shots, because if they don't, NU will beat them in transition.
-
That will all depend on how well they shoot.
-
Alright, here's another facet of the conversation that might become relevant down the line, but conference tournaments are going to be much more compelling this year.

did it twice on Thursday...

Rebounding is part of that defensive improvement, but to be the best defensive rebounding team since big ten play started is something else, too. It's a mentality change.
