Huskers Return Home to Take on No. 14 Hawkeyes Thursday

The No. 22 Nebraska women’s basketball team returns home after an extended East Coast road trip to take on No. 14 Iowa on Thursday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Tip-off between the Big Red and the Hawkeyes is set for 8 p.m.

Nebraska looks to get back on the winning track after suffering back-to-back losses at Rutgers and  Maryland last week. Those two road losses and a 78-72 overtime loss at Iowa marked the first time since joining the Big Ten that the Huskers have lost three straight road games. It also marked the only time since joining the conference that the Big Red have played three straight top-25 teams on the road.

Last week’s losses came without starting point guard Rachel Theriot, who missed both games with an ankle injury. Theriot ranks sixth in the Big Ten in scoring (16.5 ppg), third in assists (5.2 apg) and leads the conference with 37.5 minutes per game. She could be a game-time decision on Thursday.

Tear’a Laudermill has led the Huskers in scoring in six straight games, averaging 18.3 points per contest over the stretch. On Sunday at Maryland, she became the third active Husker to reach the 1,000-point mark in her career, joining Theriot (1,023) and senior forward Emily Cady (1,335). Cady produced 19 points and 18 rebounds in the first meeting with the Hawkeyes this season.

Iowa enters the Nebraska game Thursday night having won eight of its last nine games. Iowa, which is 13-0 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena this season, improved to 6-4 away from home with an 87-75 win at Wisconsin on Sunday.

Iowa is averaging 79.7 points per game to rank among the top 10 scoring teams in NCAA Division I. Iowa is also allowing 70.7 points per game. Iowa is shooting 46.3 percent from the field, including 39.9 percent with 8.0 made threes per game. Iowa is shooting 70.4 percent at the line. Iowa has been outrebounded by an average of 4.3 boards per game but carry a plus-3.5 team turnover margin.

Nebraska leads the all-time series with Iowa, 12-8, including an 8-1 record as Big Ten Conference foes. Thursday night’s game will mark Iowa’s first trip to Pinnacle Bank Arena. If you're anywhere close to PBA on Thursday night get yourself a ticket and come help cheer on the Huskers!

There is one pattern that I hope we pick up on during our game Thursday. Should we be in the lead or in a very close game in the second half we need to keep a very close eye on Logic. I've gone back and watched a few of our Iowa games and in nearly every game at some point in the second half Logic takes the ball and goes straight down the court and straight at the hoop and scores. Then she repeats about 3-4 times in a row. Usually this is when they're down and this catches them back up. Obviously there are a LOT of other things that we have to do, but personally i don't want to see that scenario happen again  basically because that's just bad defense.....not stopping the ball and all.

That might be why we lost the first game this year.  We were too worried about Logic and the Freshman slipped behind us.

That 78-72 overtime win by the Hawkeyes didn't just snap a losing streak it removed a Big Red monkey from the Hawkeyes' back.

"It's nice to have the monkey off our back," Iowa senior Bethany Doolittle said. "We broke the seal with that win earlier this season because it was definitely something that was in the back of our minds that we had that losing streak against them."

"I think it is a big benefit to us that we have that monkey off our back," Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder said.

"For one it gives us confidence going in there and also no one is talking about it anymore, now we are talking about a sweep instead."

"They were pretty excited about their defense in both those games," Bluder said. "It was a season-low conference wise for Maryland. I think they are really happy with their defense and I think they just put all their focus on defense with Rachel being out."

They’ve been a thorn in Iowa’s side for a long time. It’s good that we got the one win, but we want the sweep,’’ freshman guard Whitney Jennings said.

would like to see huskers take the ball at Doolittle---i think she will foul.

We need to shoot way better than 33%.  I would love to see Cincore used in a manner to frustrate Logic in this game.  When she gets frustrated she tends to foul a lot.  Get her on the bench sooner rather than later.

would be interesting to see Cincore, Jeffrey, and 'T'---get a rebound and turn them loose!!!   :D

tire out the hawk's so perimeter shot isn't as smooth!

I have the feeling that a wily old veteran like Logic would eat Cincore up and spit her out.  What have you seen that makes you think that Jasmine could frustrate Logic?  I just checked, Logic has 26 fouls in 12 conference games.  Doolittle is the one that fouls a lot.  If we could get her on the bench, then Em could operate underneath a lot better.

As I recall she did (maybe almost foul out) the last game....she was efective last time....get her out and it will help.

Rachel T has to play....hope....hope...hope

I'm going on the assumption that Brandi still isn't 100%, and Theriot isn't going to play.  Then I think that T and/or Natalie will have to guard Logic.  Neither one of them can afford foul trouble, so Cincore is the one that could bump her occasionally and frustrate her (and pick up some fouls depending on the refs).  Cincore doesn't get knocked down easily.

My guess is they put Hailie on the thug Logic to shut her down. They'll put Tee on Dixon. and Emily down under on Doolittle. Everyone has to stay focused and play good help defense. Make your shots on offense and rebound.

                                     I can't stress it enough................Beat Iowa!
