But I went back to watch that 5 second call on Rey in the final seconds that nearly cost us our last game in Devaney Center history. I timed it with a stopwatch multiple times and every single time from the time he receives the ball until he signals for a timeout, it is between 4.4 and 4.5 seconds.

Unless the 5 second count starts when the referee lets go of the ball (which would make absolutely no sense), then it was a bad call. Only that kind of call would go against us at home in the last 10 seconds.

Also, does the referee's hand count start at 1 or 2? Because he only waved his arm out 4 times and on the 4th time is when Rey called timeout simultaneously. He started his handcount as soon as Rey touched the ball.

Anyway, whatever.

It should also be noted that ref seconds are usually slightly longer than real seconds and that at the conclusion of 5 seconds the ref has to react and blow the whistle. The whistle would have to come at the 5.5 second mark at the earliest. The actual time doesn't really matter to me. What I noticed when I watched the replay was the ref completing 1-2-3 strokes with his arm after he handed off the ball to Ray. Midway thru his 4th arm motion, the ref quickly raised his hand and blew the whistle. I don't get it. The ref clearly wanted to make this call.

Exactly. He didn't come close to his 5th arm wave. Ballsy call to make knowing there is video evidence of his count. Funny thing was the color guy did his own count and bolted to 5 seconds completely ignoring the ref's arm motions and said "good call."

We were talking about the 5 second rule and someone was saying that you can't call timeout after 4 seconds.

If that were true they made the right call.  But I have never heard anything like that before.

i played college basketball and what I found it and what many coaches told me  is that it depended on the ref. Some refs will do 5 strokes and right when he hits the 5th stroke it will be 5. Some will do the 5 strokes and right when he would do a 6th stroke is when the 5 seconds will be called. also many of them dont even count their strokes. They just have a mental clock in their head. Obviously the ref lost count in this situation and screwed us over but we still got the win

Logically that makes no sense. All it takes is a raise of the fist to call timeout. Doesn't take a full second to do that...

I don't know what the rule is now but that is what it used to be when I coached. They goal was not to bail out the offensive team. I haven't heard or seen anything involving it in a long time, so I don't really know anymore.
